INCOMPREHENSIBLE

May 11, 2023                               INCOMPREHENSIBLE

Ephesians 1:3-6 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him, in Him He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, with which He favored us in the Beloved.”

Even though it is incomprehensible, can we believe that we were know by God before the foundation of the world? Yes-we can believe that by faith. The most brilliant among us cannot comprehend the greatness and the power of our God; it is beyond our reasoning. It is a spiritual giant-step to come to know that we are Fathered by God-that we have His DNA. Our earthly father and mother got us here physically, but God is our true Father. I well remember one starry night several years ago; as I looked up at the stars, I heard in my spirit in no uncertain terms God speak to me. The words that penetrated my total being were “The God that made those stars is your Father.” I was amazed at what I heard. Had you asked me many years previous to that night if God was my Father, I would have certainly said that I knew that God was my Father-but that night it became real from ‘head to toe.’ The first thought I had after hearing those words was “What is there to fear to worry about?” The immediate answer I had was ‘nothing.’ God has blessed His followers with every spiritual blessing; we have been adopted into His family and joined to Him-not that we earned it or was worthy of such blessings, but solely because of His grace and mercy. He has chosen you and I and He loves us with unconditional love. In Christ, we are favored by God! We tend to focus more on the physical or natural to our own hurt; as we discover what it means to have God living in us through the Holy Spirit, our focus will be more and more on Him and His spiritual blessings. We are more spiritual beings than physical beings; we are not a body with a spirit, but a spirit with a body. So, let us be disciplined and wise enough to turn our attention and our focus to the things of God and let us take steps to grow in the faith. Growing in the faith is more than attending a church service once a week and listening to a message from the minister. Our growth starts with a desire to know God in greater ways, by studying His word, by spending time with other believers, by obeying His word, and by prayer and worship. Above all, let us know that God knew us long before our physical birth and that He has called us to be a part of His family and to enjoy a relationship with Him.

Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
Romans 8:29-30 “For those He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom He predestined He also called, and those whom He called He also justified, and those whom He justified He also glorified.”

THE EVIDENCE

May 9, 2023                           THE EVIDENCE

Galatians 5:22-24 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.”

At times, we may wonder if we are truly a born again believer. We know that salvation comes by trusting Jesus as our Savior alone; we are not saved by works. When one comes to know God as Savior, everything changes. The most important change is that the Holy Spirit takes up residence in us; in this process, we are made new creations with new hearts, new minds, and new spirits. Becoming a believer does not mean that the old nature, the flesh, is  annihilated, but it does mean that we have the power not to live according to the desires of the flesh. It is only by the Spirit of God living in us that we can live according to the Spirit. The Spirit is real; He is a person; He is a part of the Trinity; and He is the source of power in the believer. The Spirit is always drawing us to the Father and equipping us to live in a way that is pleasing to the Father. If we ever find ourselves doubting our salvation, there is a sure way of alleviating that doubt. It sounds simple, but are we experiencing the fruit of the Spirt as listed above. Again, its not about trying in our own power to ‘do’ or to produce the fruit of the Spirit; the fruit of the Spirit is a by-product of the Spirit living in us. (It is another subject, but we must understand that a believer can resist the work of the Spirit and thus not experience the fruit of the Spirit.) We must choose to cooperate with the Spirit and work with Him as He works in us. The fruit of the Spirit is a package deal-we either experience all of the fruit of the Spirit, or we experience none of the fruit. The idea of trying to ‘work on’ having one of the fruits is foreign to scripture. Having the fruit of the Spirit in no way means that we are exempt from troubles and trials; but it does mean that even in the difficult times, the Spirit continues to produce fruit. This list of the fruit of the Spirit might sound like ‘pie in the sky’ to some; however, it is a miracle and a blessing of God for each believer to be able to be a temple of the Holy Spirt, experiencing the life that God has for those who love Him and walk according to His ways. The Holy Spirit enables us to crucify the flesh and He enables us to live according to the Spirit.

Romans 6:2 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.”

SOJOURNERS

May 7, 2023                                SOJOURNERS

Philippians 3:20 “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior; the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Hebrews 11:13, 13:14 “These all died in faith, not having the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on earth.”      “For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.”
1 Peter 2:11-12 “Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.”

We were born into this world and we grew up in this world, so in the natural, we see this world is our home. However, once we are joined to God through faith in Christ, old things pass away and we are made new creations and we are made citizens of the kingdom of God. God knew us even before the ‘foundation of the world;’ because sin marred our relationship with God, God sent His Son to redeem us back to Himself. Our true home is with God in His kingdom. We are tempted to view this world as our home; we interpret events and base our opinions and feelings on how things effect our life on earth. We also tend to think short-sighted; we act as though life on this earth is all there is. We also are apt to think in terms of time-how many years we live on this earth. If some one dies at a young age, we think how tragic-and it is. However, in the kingdom of God, time is no issue; God is not limited by time-He is eternal and all who belong Him live in the eternal realm. If not alert, we adapt to the ways of the culture in which we live. We do live temporarily in this world and we are to be about the things we need to do, but we are called to be focused on living our life here with a kingdom of God mindset. We are to be about our Fathers business here on earth; God has not abandoned the world-His kingdom will one day fill the earth. If we want to simplify our reason for living and if we want to know why we are here, it is to be a living witness of God, and to be about doing righteous deeds that glorify God. We have the privilege and the responsibility of reflecting and demonstrating the goodness of God and being expressions of His nature. So, let us make sure our view of life on this earth is founded on life in the kingdom of God. As someone has said, let us be culture transformers rather than being transformed by the culture.
2 Corinthians 5:1-4 “For we know that if the earthly tent which is our home is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For indeed in this hose we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling place from heaven; inasmuch as we, having put it on, shall not be found naked. For indeed while we are in this tent, we groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed, but to be clothed, in order that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.”

SUFFICIENT

May 5, 2023                                    SUFFICIENT

2 Corinthians 9:8, 3:5 “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things, you may abound in every good work.”     “Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.”
Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
2 Peter 1:3 “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence.”

If we truly take in what these verses tell us, we will stand amazed. (I know that I can read a certain verse of scripture, but not let if ‘soak in’ or have it’s intended impact on me.) We may at times feel that we are not up to the task, or feel that we are lacking what we need to do what is before us. When we have these thoughts and feelings, it is a sure sign that we are depending on our own ability instead of trusting God to enable us to do what we need to do. In the verse above, we are told that God’s grace abounds to us, causing us to be sufficient in all things! That is awesome. In the other verses we see that “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness;” but it comes through the knowledge of Him. Being sufficient for all things is inseparably tied to the power and grace of God being manifest in us. “Knowledge of Him” are three powerful and all-important words we must not miss. We are to be growing in the knowledge of Him (2 Peter 3:18); we do not grow in Him automatically. Growth implies change or increasing in understanding. If we are to grow in our knowledge of Him, it stands to reason that we must study His word and let His word impact our lives-obeying His word. Not only study His word, but spend time meditating on and fully embracing what we read in the scriptures. We are made sufficient for all good works; we are to be about the things that are good-things that are pleasing to the Lord and things that bless others. “All things” include what we may call menial task, but whatever we do we can do with a sense of God’s grace and power at work in us. So, we are sufficient, BUT our sufficiency does not come from ourselves, but from God.

2 Corinthians 12:9 “He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.’ Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weakness, that the power of Christ may rest on me.”

May 3, 2023                        ACCORDING TO THE SPIRIT

Romans 8:5-6, 9-10, 13 “For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.”       “However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the Spirit is alive because of righteousness.”      “For if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirt you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

1 Corinthians 6:17 “But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.”

We hear a lot about the flesh and the Spirit. The flesh refers to that part of man that opposes the things of God; The Spirt refers to the Holy Spirit of God that God gives to each believer. There are things we could discuss and perhaps debate in the above scriptures, but the point for us to consider today is whether our mind is set on the Spirit or on the flesh. There is a basic assumption that a believer can choose to walk according to the flesh, even though he is in Christ. We must live as those who have been joined to the Lord and conscience of the Holy Spirit of God living in us. There is no place, and no excuse for any believer to live according to the flesh. What is so critical for us is where we set our minds; what or who is it that has our attention; what or who is our motivation in life; what or who shapes our desires and aspirations; and what or who is our major pursuit in life. There is no good fruit that comes from living according to the flesh; but blessings and peace to those who set their mind on the Spirit. We must guard against taking our salvation lightly or being spiritually complacent; we must set our mind on the things of the Spirit and we must give attention to growing in the faith. We must not excuse our spiritual negligence on the old sin nature; Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, sets us free from life according to the flesh. We must know that as believers, we are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit-so let us live daily according to the Spirit; when we sense that the flesh is trying to exert itself, we must recon it dead and continue walking according to the Spirit.

Romans 6:10-11 “For the death He died, He died to sin, once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Even so consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

May 1, 2023                         A SERVANT MINDSET

1 Peter 4:10 “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”
Matthew 20:26-28 “It is not so among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Galatians 5:13-14 “For you were called to freedom, brethren, only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”

This may come as a shocker to many, but life is not all about us! However, if you observe the lives of people, if you listen to conversations and if you listen to the news, you will conclude that many, if not most, live as though life is all about them. There is within the core of man a nature that impels him or her to search for that which satisfies his deepest longings. Such things as material gain, popularity, being attractive and physically fit, success in a certain field, or whatever-may bring temporary satisfaction but it is short-lived. But God has a solution that fulfills the deepest longings of our soul. The ways of God are contrary to the ways of the world; the world says to do whatever it takes to satisfy self, but God tells us to lay our lives down. What a contrast! It is a mystery and a miracle, but as we lay our lives down and take on a servant mindset, we find a sense of fulfillment. Our new nature finds joy and fulfillment when we serve, when we bless, when we give, and when we consider others above ourselves. 2 Corinthians 9:10 is an amazing verse: “Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.” God sees to it that we never run of seeds to sow! Laying our lives down does not mean that we neglect our personal responsibilities, but t does mean that our mind-set in life is that we are here to serve. And let us not overlook the fact that our immediate family members are among those we are to serve. Jesus came to serve and He is our example; let us be about serving and blessing.

Proverbs 11:25 “Whoever brings a blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.”

CONSECRATION

April 28, 2023                          CONSECRATION

Exodus 19:10-11 “And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes and be ready by the third day, because on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.’”
Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, pleasing unto God, your reasonable service.”
1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

Consecrate: to make or declare sacred-especially: to devote irrevocably to the worship of God by a solemn ceremony.”  “To consecrate, sanctify, prepare, dedicate, be hallowed, be holy, be sanctified, be separate.”

In this modern day, many take a casual approach to life, a laid-back attitude, and have the view that I do what I want to do. If not alert, we can carry these mind-sets over to our relationship with God. We are a part of the family of God and we can be at peace and be comfortable with God, but at the same time we must also know that He is holy, and He calls us to be a holy people. Because we have been joined to God, our conduct-how we live our life is of upmost importance; we must not have a ho-hum mindset when it comes to living life as the sons and daughters of God. Before God came down from Mount Sinai, He told the Moses to get the people ready for that day; part of getting ready was to wash their clothes. That is interesting-wash their clothes? To me, the implication for us living under the New Covenant is clear; we are to be cleansing ourselves, ridding ourselves of anything in spirit or body that is not pleasing to the Lord. It is good for us to have those times when we examine and evaluate how we are living, to take a spiritual inventory. It should be our heart to be found ready should He appear at any moment; we are to keep ourselves ready. Also, to consecrate has the idea of setting apart; we are called to give ourselves completely to God and acknowledge with our words and our action that He is Lord over us.

2 Corinthians 7:1 “Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let is cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

ABOUNDING JOY

4/26/2023

April 26, 2023                                  ABOUNDING IN JOY

Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”
Philippians 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”
James 1:2 “Count it all joy, My brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds.”
Romans 14:17 “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”
John 15:11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

The joy that the above scriptures are referring too does not come from our own efforts to be joyful. And this joy abides even in the midst of difficulties; the roots of this joy run deeper than the trials we encounter. Let us not misunderstand; joy is not always expressed in laughter; there are times that we are burdened and in need of the comfort that God gives. The joy that is constant in all circumstances comes from God. However, God does not automatically zap all of His people with joy; experiencing joy is a by-product of believing God, loving Him, knowing Him in a personal way, and seeking Him first. If we are pursuing our ways and living according to our own preferences, we will not know the joy of the Lord. One primary reason that this joy is not dependent on circumstances is that God is a God of hope. Even though we may be experiencing trials, we know that God is working in the trials, that He has a purpose in it, and that He will bring us through the trial; even though we do not fully understand the ‘why’ of the difficulty and even though we cannot see how any good will come out of it, we can have hope in God-that He is in control. The very idea of hope is that we hope for what we cannot see. Because God is faithful, because He loves us, because He is all-wise and all-powerful, and because the Holy Spirit is at work in us, we have every reason to put all hope in God. Again; Jesus said we would have trials in life; sometimes things go wrong for us; sometimes we do not feel like laughing-but that does not change who God is. No one likes trials, but according to James 1:2, we can rejoice in the trial because we know that it is producing something good. So, the key point for us is whether our joy is tied to how we interpret what’s taking place around us in the the here and now, or is our joy rooted in our God who loves us. Jesus desires that His joy be in us and that our joy may be full; it is indeed the joy of the Lord that we need.

Psalm 16:11 “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forever.”
