Hebrews 6:10-12 “God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to help the saints. And we desire that each of you show the same diligence so as to realize the same full assurance of hope until the end, that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”
Galatians 6:9-10 “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”
Perseverance and diligence are called for in the life of a believer. We have been blessed in many ways and God has done a great work in us presently. However there are promises yet to be fulfilled and an inheritance yet to be received. Because of all that God has ahead for us, we must remain steadfast and diligent in what God has called us to be about at the present. Our faith is not just something we believe; we are called to be workers in His kingdom. God has chosen to use believers, you and me, to minster to the saints; we are co-workers with God. What greater privilege and opportunity could one have than being co-workers with God? It is those who through ‘faith and patience’ inherit the promises that God has for us and it is this hope of receiving the inheritance that energizes us and keeps us as active laborers in His kingdom. We must not allow ourselves to become sluggish, but to be imitators of those who have demonstrated faith and patience in the lives they lived. If you read the New Testament, you will find many instructions and admonitions to be about doing good works ‘unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.’ Our faith is not personal or private; good works are faith in action. James tells us to show our faith by our works. It is important for us to know that we are not saved by good works nor do we gain God’s love and approval by good works. Good works come as a result of knowing the love of God and experiencing His work in us. Remember that we have been and are being restored to the ‘likeness’ of God, and God is a God who does good works. There are innumerable good works we could do, and it is true that we cannot personally meet all needs that we see. What I say next could be misunderstood and it can sound contradictory. We must depend on the leading of the Holy Spirit as to what good works we should do; but at the same time, it should be our nature to do good works because God has given us a new nature like His. The bottom line is that when we have the opportunity, let us do good to all men. God will show you what good works he has for you personally.
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are HIs workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
