WE HAVE A GUIDE

March 6, 2024                          WE HAVE A GUIDE

Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
Psalms 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
2 Timothy 3:16 “All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteous.”
Isaiah 30;21 “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”

To think that we have the wisdom and the knowledge on our own to navigate this life successfully in all of it’s twist and turns and all of it’s complications, is ludicrous. We must be alert to the fact that ‘there is a way that seems right to man, but the end thereof is death.’ Another error that we must be alert to is that it is possible for one to say that God’s word is important and to read the word because that is what we are suppose to do, but yet not be guided by His word; one can read the word in their quite time, then go their own way. The good news is that in spite of living in a dark world where confusion abounds, we have a sure guide to life-the word of God. The Bible is the wisdom of God; there is no other book like the Bible. The amazing thing is that His word is a living word; it speaks to the present and addresses the root issues; the word has a way of revealing what is in our hearts. It is true that the Bible does not give us a specific word on many day to day decisions we must make. For example, it does not tell us directly whether we are to make a certain purchase such as buying a house or whether to take a certain job, or whatever. However, the word of God gives us a framework in making decisions; will our decision honor Him; is it based on the wisdom God gives; is it a decision based on faith. Plus, we have the Holy Spirit in us who will guide us in our decision making. Often, it is a matter of having the peace that the Holy Spirit gives regarding the decision we are making. The main point is that we should have as our hearts desire to please Him in all we do. Another truth; the word of God makes it abundantly clear that our trust and faith must be in God as our provider; we must not trust our ‘wise’ decisions or our good work, our savings, our insurance, etc. As we trust God, and as we grow in the knowledge of Him through the study of His word, we will discover that He does indeed guide and direct us in this life.

Matthew 4:4 “But He answered, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

GOD’S WISDOM-A MYSTERY

March 4, 2024                     GOD’S WISDOM-A MYSTERY

1 Corinthians 2:4-7 “And my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God. Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak of God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom, which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory;”

The world operates on the wisdom of man. As you look at the history of the world and observe the current state of affairs, the obvious conclusion that the wisdom of man has a poor track record. However, there is a wisdom that comes from God-but it is a mystery, and it is hidden, and many never experience the wisdom of God. That may sound a little strange, but that is what it is. Before the ages, God predestined His wisdom to our glory; Jesus came demonstrating the wisdom of God, and later, Paul, called of God, spoke of the wisdom of God. Today, we value and enjoy listening to those who speak with persuasive words; but persuasive words alone are empty and are of little lasting value. Paul, a brilliant, well educated leader of his day did not rely on persuasive words, but instead, relied on the power of the Spirit. Paul wanted the followers of Christ to have their faith based not on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God. Paul spoke and demonstrated the wisdom of God through the power of the Spirit. The world does not, and is not able to comprehend the wisdom of God. The good news is that we can hear, believe and receive the wisdom of God because the Spirit of God reveals it to us. Even though the wisdom of God is hidden from those who do not know Him, His wisdom is revealed in the scriptures. It is not up to us to figure out the wisdom of God, but to put our faith and trust in God and to be sensitive to the Spirit of God who is present in us to reveal the things of God. We must hunger and thirst to know God and to learn of His ways. When we have decisions to make, or we need to know how to respond to certain situations, we can trust that the Holy Spirit will reveal the way in which we should go. Often, it is a matter of just following the peace in our hearts; sometimes the Spirit speaks a word to us; or He may use someone else to speak a word; or a particular scripture may give us a clear direction. So, let us be reminded that God reveals His wisdom to those who seek Him; He gives us direction; He empowers us and equips us and enables us experience His wisdom in this life; we have a wisdom not of this world, but a wisdom that comes from God.
James 1:5 “If any of you wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

KNOWING THAT

March 2, 2024                          KNOWING THAT

1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.”

Having a reason motivates us to do whatever it is we need to do. Doing something when we have no reason is a real downer. The ‘banner over our life,’ the over-arching view of ourselves should be that we have been purchased by God, our sins are forgiven, we have been made new with a new identity, we live to glorify God through our actions, we have been given a spiritual gift, we have a ministry, and we are destined for heaven. We must not separate what we do into ‘secular’ and ‘spiritual.’ All we do is to be done out of our new identity as ones who belongs to God and ones who reflect the character of God. ‘Therefore’ is an important word; because of who God is and because of who we are in Him, we ‘therefore’ are to be steadfast, immovable, and always abound in the work of the Lord. The ‘work of the Lord’ is all inclusive; it’s more than bible study, attending church or teaching a class. Choosing to walk according to the Spirit instead of the flesh is a work of the Lord; helping someone in need, being a giver of time or resources, being faithful and diligent, encouraging others-are all works of the Lord. It’s awesome to realize that our life has a big purpose-a purpose set by God. We are flesh and blood-but the Spirit of God has taken up residence in us and His presence brings about a supernatural life; a life unlike the life of those who do not know Him. Only by the work of God in us and our working with Him as He works in us can we be steadfast, immovable and abounding in the work of the Lord. Sure-there will be trying spiritual and physical times and times when we need to renew our minds, but remembering who we are motivates and renews us and enables us to abound in the work of the Lord. Knowing that our work in the Lord is not in vain is motivation and reason to keep on keeping on in the work of the Lord. What we do daily matters in the kingdom of God. We have every reason and every motivation to be faithful in the calling we have from God. If by chance, we have failed along the way, He is always calling us back to Him and to the plans He has for us.
Colossians 3:23-24 “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Jesus.”
