NO  SURPRISES

April 30, 2018                                              NO  SURPRISES
John 17:14-16 “I have given them Thy word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of this world, even as I am not of this world. I do not ask Thee to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.”
It is now commonplace for the media, as well as the general population to ‘bash’ Christianity. It seems we are surprised and shocked by the fact that our culture rejects and opposes our faith in God. Christians are now considered narrow minded and judgmental by many in our society. Before we jump on board with this line of thought, let us as believers take some of the blame for how the world views our ‘Christianity.’ Some believers have in fact been judgmental, and have been guilty of having a double standard-professing to be a Christian, but living contrary to the gospel. However, it is true that the world in general rejects God and rejects those who live a godly life. One word of warning-if we profess to be a Christian, but live as those who are of the world, we will face little, if any opposition from the world. The big picture is that there are two kingdoms or realms-the kingdom of the world and the kingdom of God, and the two are opposed to each other-they cannot be blended, even though many may try. This basic conflict of the kingdoms is just the way it is-and always will be. The values of the two kingdoms are totally opposite. For example, the world focuses on getting, fulfilling the desires of self, and sees man as the master of his own fate.  God’s kingdom is about giving, denying self, seeking God, considering others above self-the list goes on. When an unbeliever, focused on satisfying self, encounters a believer who is focused on giving, he labels and judges the believer as having a ‘holier than I’ attitude as a means of diversion. In a very natural way, the stage is set for conflict-the world, as this verse tells us, hates those who are not of this world. As believers, we have been born again, made new, taken out of this world system, and given a new identity. In regards to this conflict of the two kingdoms, there is a balancing truth that we must not overlook. It is not a contradiction, but a paradox, that God has promised us His peace in this life, and in 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12, He tells us to be ambitious to live a quiet life, working, and behaving properly toward the outsiders-the unbelievers. Let us not look for or conjure up trouble, but also let us not be surprised when it comes. The good news for us is that Jesus has prayed to the Father, committing us the care and protection of God-that He would keep us from the evil one. The key part for us is to know the Father and to walk in His ways.
1 John 4:4 “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

IT  IS  I

April 27, 2018                                    IT  IS  I
Mark 6:47-48, 50-51: “And when it was evening, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and He was alone on the land. And seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night, He came to them, walking on the sea;…for they all saw Him and were frightened. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, ‘Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.’ And He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were greatly astonished,”
As Jesus was sending the multitudes away, He instructed His disciples to get in the boat and cross over the sea to Bethsaida, where He would meet them later. The events that followed left the disciples “greatly astonished”-certainly an understatement-they see Jesus walking on the water, He gets in the boat with them-the storm stops! This is not only an interesting story to read about, it also gives us insight into the heart that God has for His people as demonstrated by what Jesus did on this particular occasion. The obvious message for us is found in the words-“And seeing them straining at the oars.” The fourth watch of the night was from 3:00 to 6:00 am. We learn from other accounts of these events that the disciples had battled the storm for some time and they no doubt feared for their life. We also learn from other passages that Jesus delayed His going to the disciples. Even though Jesus is not with us physically, He nonetheless “sees” us “straining” with in trials that come with living in this fallen world. There is an important principle at work in Jesus delaying His going to the disciples, and we do well to understand the reason for the delay. A major truth found throughout the scriptures is that God desires that we trust Him other than trusting in our self-this is a crucial issue for all believers. It is when we come to the end of ourselves, when we lay our self aside, when we acknowledge that our self is not sufficient, that God comes to us. Actually, God never leaves us, but He waits for us to call out to Him. We don’t know if the disciples were praying as they fought the storm or not, but they were likely feeling that their best effort at rowing was not enough-that’s the key. The sobering truth is that our self, our best effort, is insufficient for the storms of life as well as life in general. God is looking, and He is waiting for us to cry out to Him. God loves to rescue His people. There is no need to fear, but only to admit our need and our dependency on God. Let us be quick to confess that our strength is insufficient. Remember, nothing is hidden from the eyes of God.
Psalm 91:14-15 “Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name. He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.”

LET  NOT

April 24, 2018                                       LET  NOT
John 14:1 “Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.”
One might ask, “Was Jesus really serious? Or was He just trying to make someone feel better at the moment”? Obviously, Jesus was serious-He meant exactly what He said. In life, we face many trials and difficulties and we are forced to deal with the reality of living in a fallen world. Jesus, being the Son of God, knew the kingdom of God, and He came to demonstrate to flesh and blood, this kingdom.  We tend to be focused on both kingdoms, whereas Jesus was focused on the kingdom of God. Jesus understands that we live in a fallen world with all of its trials, but He also knows that the kingdom of God touches and transforms every aspect of life on earth-including the trials. If we are to experience His kingdom here and now, we must have a core belief that there is a God, that He is ruling the universe, that He is love, that He sent His Son Jesus to redeem us and restore us to Himself, and that His Spirit lives in us. We also must understand that because He is in us, we have the power to be overcomers in life. Being a child of God does not mean that we will face no difficulties, but it does mean that His presence in us gives us the grace and power to overcome whatever we face. The scriptures tell us that God is a God who comforts us-so we know He understands that we do at times face difficulties and suffering. God allows adversity to come our way, but we must understand that He has a purpose in doing so. In our time on earth, we are being transformed into His image, and this transformation process includes learning how to overcome and how to live life according to His plans and purposes. As believers, we have the capacity to live super-natural lives because the spirit of God lives in us. This means that we have the power to respond to difficulties differently than those who do not know God. As God’s people, we have been given understanding and wisdom, and can view life’s situations from God’s perspective. We know and have experienced the grace of God and most importantly, we know the long term plans that God has for His people. Yes, we face trials. But because God has redeemed us and made us His own, and because we know that every promise concerning God’s people will be fulfilled, we have hope and we find comfort in the God who has compassion on us. Just because God understands and because God has revealed His plans for us, our hearts are not troubled. It may sound overly simplified, but if we believe in Jesus and the gospel He proclaimed-all is well.
2 Corinthians 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort.”

ON  BEHALF  OF  ALL  MEN

April 21, 2018                                     ON  BEHALF  OF  ALL  MEN
1 Timothy 2:1-4: “First of all then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgiving, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quite life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God, our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
As we read the scriptures, we come across certain passages that cause us to pause and be reminded of the goodness of our God. In life, we encounter various trials and we are forced to engage in many battles, but the trials and battles that we face come as a result of the fall of man-man rejecting God and going his own way. Man is responsible for the plight of man; God has no desire for life to be difficult or miserable. It’s possible, and even likely, that we get so caught up in the battles of life that we lose sight of the fact that in God’s kingdom and in the ways of God, there is peace. God is the God of peace; not of strife. The scriptures tell us, and life teaches us, that there will be trials in this life, and in the scriptures we are also told how God enables us to be overcomers. It is good for us to have as a bed-rock of our soul, our minds, and our spirit, the truth of the above verses. Even though we are of necessity facing trials in this life, let us be reminded that the rule of God in our life brings peace, and let us always be praying just as Paul instructed Timothy to pray-that we entreat, we pray, make petitions, and give thanks unto God for all men. I find it refreshing to know that it is God’s will for His people to be able to live “a tranquil and quite life in all godliness and dignity.” It is also refreshing to know that God desires all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of truth. No matter what we may be facing in life at the present, let us always be praying for, be moving toward what we know is the will and plans of God for us and all of mankind.  We have the privilege and the calling to represent the kingdom of God in a dark world; we can live in peace, and we can demonstrate the peace that comes from God even though the storms may be raging around us. When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, one thing He said to pray was-“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” Let the life we live be a part of the process of His kingdom coming to where we live and let us be about doing His will—what a blessing! We serve a good, good God! We will see His kingdom come. Keep on keeping on in the Lord.
John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

HIS  WORKMAN SHIP

4/18/2018

April 19, 2018                                       HIS  WORKMANSHIP
Ephesians 2:10: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Philippians 2:12b-13: “work out your salvation with fear and trembling: for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”
These are astounding, powerful, life changing truths-once we come to understand, once we believe what God has spoken. We so easily get caught up in the urgency and pressures of daily life, distracting us from the big picture. Let us be reminded that first and foremost, YOU and I, are God’s workmanship-not in theory only, but in day-to-day reality! Can we believe that we are not here by chance, but we are here as a result of being created in Christ Jesus? We are not just created by Christ Jesus, but we were created for a purpose-for good works. And, the amazing thing is that it is not just good works-but works that God has prepared for us and that we should walk in them. When we begin to see these truths, when the truth that we are His workmanship ‘sinks in’, our view and understanding of our salvation is radically transformed. It is a spiritual milestone for us when we finally come to realize that life is not all about us, but about living in such a way that brings Him pleasure. Understanding these truths and ‘buying into them’ brings a new dynamic to life, curing depression, discouragement and hopelessness. Also, when we understand that we are His workmanship-that He created us for His good pleasure-that He has prepared good works for us to walk in, it’s right and logical that we should have a sense of ‘fear and trembling’ because it is possible for us to be negligent in aligning our lives with His purposes. This type of ‘fear and trembling’ is healthy and is a safeguard for us-causing us to be alert to His calling and purpose in our daily lives. Let us know that we have the responsibility of working out our salvation. But also let us know that God has given us His Spirit to enable us to work out this great salvation. As a believer, no matter what your present circumstances may be, you are His workmanship and He has prepared good works for you to walk in-today.
Philippians 1:6: “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”

THE  LIMIT  OF  THE  MIND

4/16/2018

April 16, 2018                             THE  LIMIT  OF  THE  MIND
Ephesians 4:17-18: “This I say therefore, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;
Ephesians 4:20: “But you did not learn Christ in this way,”
Man has a propensity to live according to his mind. However, as the above verses point out, living solely according to the mind is futile, resulting in a sub-standard life. The one that does not know God as Savior is indeed limited to living according to his mind, missing the abundant life that is available to those who know God. We see that the futility of the mind and the ignorance that is present in the non-believer, is a reality that comes as a result of having a hardness of heart toward God. God gave man an amazing mind, but this mind is incomplete in and of itself. It is when the mind and the Spirit of God or both operational in the individual that leads to abundant life. The Spirit of God in man brings clarity, understanding and wisdom, enabling the believer to see beyond the natural-to see truth. So, man, apart from God is incomplete. In verses 21-32 of chapter 4, Paul goes on to describe the life that is available to the believer-the life experienced as a result of having the Spirit of God. In this section, we find that we can lay aside our former manner of life, and in exchange, we can put on the new man which is in the likeness of God; that we can be renewed in the spirit of our mind; that we can speak wholesome words-and the list goes on. Ephesians 5:1 actually tells us “to be imitators of God!” It is utterly impossible for one to live the life God calls us to live-to imitate Him-apart from the work of the Spirit of God in us. As believers, let us be aware of the danger of living according to the mind only-let us know that only as we work with, listen to, and obey the voice of the Spirit within us, will we be complete.
2 Corinthians 2:12-13: “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.”

THAT  WE  MIGHT  KNOW  HIM

April 13, 2018                                        THAT  WE  MIGHT  KNOW
1 Corinthians 2:12-13 “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual taught with spiritual words. But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.”
Many believe that the physical world is all there is, but the scriptures make it clear that there are spiritual forces at work in the universe. 2 Corinthians 4:18 tells us that the things seen are temporal, but the things not seen are eternal. (Even believers can fall into error and find themselves focusing more on the physical or temporal rather that the spiritual and eternal.)  For many, it seems preposterous to say that there are only two spiritual forces at work and that every person is under the influence of one of these forces. Until a person is born again into the kingdom of God, they live according to the spirit of the world, which is synonymous with the kingdom of Satan or the kingdom of darkness. The good news is that at salvation, one is transferred to the Kingdom of God and comes under the realm of the Spirit of God. It sounds rather simple, but it is an awesome fact that as believers, we have received the Sprit that is from God! This Spirit that is from God, the Holy Spirit, opens our eyes and gives us understanding in the things of God. One of the primary works of the Holy Spirit it to reveal the marvelous things that God has freely given to us-we have made new creations with a new nature, a new mind, and a new spirit, have been forgiven, have been made overcomers in this life, and gives us the power to live in a way that is pleasing to the Lord- the New Testament has been given to reveal our identity in Christ-check it out! Let us not lose sight of the fact that God has given us a wonderful gift-the gift of the Holy Spirit who reveals to us all that God has done on our behalf.
John 16:13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.”

WALKING  IN  THE  LIGHT

4/10/2018

April 10, 2018                            WALKING  IN  THE  LIGHT
1 John 1:6-7 “If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
John 8:12 “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
To walk in the light is neither complicated nor difficult for the child of God. But those who do not known God as Savior, have no choice but to walk in darkness, as Jesus is the source of light. Man takes pride in his self-sufficiency and his own wisdom, but apart from God, and contrary to what he may think, he remains in darkness. The good news for us is that walking in the light does not require a great effort on our part, but rather is a by-product of following Jesus. Jesus made that awesome, bold statement that He, and He alone, is the light of the world. Either we believe that He is the light of the world, or we do not believe that. Evidently, according to the verse above, there were some who claimed to be walking in the light, but they were actually walking in darkness. Before we get too hard on those that were living a contradictory life, let us make sure we are not guilty of the same. There is no in between; we follow Jesus, or we do not follow Jesus. One may wonder what following Jesus looks like, or ask how one follows Jesus. As all alluded to above, following Jesus comes as a result of knowing Him and discovering our identity in Him. As we get to know God as our Father and as we experience His love being poured out into our hearts, it naturally becomes our desire and our passion to follow Him. Once we taste the life-and the light-that is in Him, everything else outside of Him becomes as darkness. Jesus did not leave us to figure out on our own how to follow Him. The gospels record the life of Jesus on the earth; the life that Jesus lived IS the example for us. And, the life Jesus lived, He lived out of His relationship with His Father-and so it is to be with us. We have been adopted into the family of God, have been made new with new minds, new hearts, and new spirits, and have been given the Holy Spirit to empower us to live as the people of God in the midst of darkness. Let us be reminded that if we are not following Jesus, then we are in darkness. Let us not get accustomed to the darkness, but let us follow the Light of the world-Jesus.
Ephesians 5:8 “…for you were formally darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light”

REVEALING  THE  HEART  OF  GOD

4/7/2018

April 7, 2018                                  REVEALING  THE  HEART  OF  GOD
Numbers 6:24-26: “The Lord bless you, and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine on you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace.”
God spoke to Moses and told Moses to instruct Aaron (Moses spoke person) and his sons to bless the people with this blessing. What is so amazing about this blessing is that it gives us a clear understanding of the heart that God has for His people; this is not a blessing that man came up with, it’s from the heart of God. As you reflect on this blessing, you realize that it is totally the prerogative of God to bless-we can’t earn His blessings. True, we cannot earn His blessings, but we can turn our hearts to the Lord and walk in His ways, and in so doing, we will experience His blessing-not because of what we have done, but because He reveals Himself to those who seek Him and He blesses them. Nothing can surpass the Lord blessing us and keeping us, and what could be better than God’s face shining on us? He desires to be gracious to us, and His grace is sufficient for any circumstance we face in life. Even though we are undeserving of His grace, He lavishes His grace and His love upon us-because it is His heart to do so. We face difficulties in life and there are times when we are burdened, but the Lord see’s our plight and just by seeing His countenance and His love for us, we are lifted up. And finally, the supreme blessing in life is to have the peace of God-to know that all is well with us and our heavenly Father. We live in a time of great unrest, strife and conflict throughout the world and it seems that things are out of control. However, God has not changed and He still is a God who blesses those who love Him and seek Him-the heart that He had for the children of Israel is the same heart He has for all of those who have put their faith and trust in Him. Perhaps we should write this blessing out and put it on the refrigerator or the dash of our car as a reminder of the Father’s heart for us.
James 1:17: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

KNOWING  THIS

4/4/2018

April 4, 2018                                  KNOWING  THIS
Romans 6:4-6 “Therefore we have buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin.
If the resurrection of Jesus is something we celebrate once a year on Easter, then somehow we are deficient in our understanding of the impact of the resurrection. In verse 3, Paul wrote-‘Or do you not know’-referring to the fact that if we have been baptized into Jesus, then we have also been baptized into His death. There is a connection with us being baptized into Christ and His resurrection-they are not two separate events. Being baptized into Christ is more than being immersed in, or sprinkled with water-water baptism is to be the outward sign or public confession of what has taken place on the inside. Being immersed in water is a picture of being placed in a grave-death to ourselves-and then raised out of the grave as a new person. Being baptized into Christ means that our old self-that part of us that is contrary to God-our sin nature-is put to death. In order for us to walk in newness of life, it was necessary that the old man be crucified. Also, to walk in newness of life, we must understand and receive the scriptures that teach that we have died to who we were and that we have been made new with a new nature, a new spirit, and a new mind. We also must understand that to walk in newness does not happen automatically as we see in Ephesians 4:2-24 where we are instructed to “put off the old self” and to “put on the new self.” The key to us walking in newness is for us to identify with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, realizing that our old self died with Him and we were resurrected in newness.
Romans 8:11: “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwell you.”
Blessings,
Buddy
