PAYING  ATTENTION

May 30, 2018                                         PAYING  ATTENTION
Hebrews 2:1, 13: “For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away for it.   “But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called ‘Today,’ lest anyone of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”
If you are fishing out of a boat on a lake and the anchor is not down, while you may be focused on what tackle and what bait to use, without your being aware of it, the boat can drift. So it is with life; we can be so focused on and consumed with the immediate that we can find ourselves drifting from what is most important in life. The writer of Hebrews goes into great detail describing the glory and the majesty of Jesus and how God has appointed Jesus heir of all things. Words fall short of describing the absolute power of God-He created the universe and upholds all things; He spoke through the prophets; His throne is forever; He will make the enemies a footstool for Jesus; and He sent Jesus to redeem His people-these are the truly important things in life, and for all these reasons, “we must pay closer attention”. Our salvation is no small issue-it cost God the death of His Son on a cruel cross. We, as believers must be alert to the fact that we can drift from the foundations of the gospel. One reason for this is that because we become so ‘familiar’ with the message of the gospel, the impact of the gospel is diminished. To a great degree, this happens when we live out of principles and mental assent with the scriptures instead of a living and vibrant relationship with God our Father. A key factor in living in a relationship with our Father is that of experiencing His love that He has poured into our hearts. Romans 5:5. Knowing that God has fathered us and knowing our identity in Him-that He has made us new creations with new hearts, new minds, and new spirits-is an antidote for drifting. A second antidote is that of being rightly related to other believers where we find the encouragement to continue in the things of the Lord-encouraging one another “day after day.” Rather than taking a casual approach to our faith and belief in God, let us, as this verse tells us, “pay much closer attention to what we have heard.” If you are a believer, then you have heard at least some of the gospel. Hearing what God has said in His word, and hearing what He says to us through the Holy Spirit is to be a life time experience. Hearing what God says and acting on it-taking it to heart-is the key to experiencing life to the max. The good news is that no matter what our age is or our present circumstances, we can put into action what we have heard from God! Let us not be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin, but let us encourage one another-day by day.
Hebrews 2:3: “how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him.

FINAL  WORDS

May 27, 2018                                         FINAL  WORDS
Matthew 28:18-20: “And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
It’s awesome to know the final words that Jesus spoke on earth before He ascended into heaven. Just in a few words Jesus gives us the ‘therefore’ of His coming. His instruction to His followers (you and I) is clear, leaving no doubt as to what we are to be about. First, Jesus announces that He had been given ‘all authority’ ‘in heaven and on earth,’ and this authority is the basis of the instructions He gives. In other words, because of His authority, His instructions can be executed. Because of all that Jesus accomplished by His life on earth and His subsequent death and resurrection, we are able to obey all that He commands. As I have said in previous blogs, many tend to view the word ‘command’ in a negative light-we resist being told what to do. As believers, we should rejoice over His commands and be anxious to carry out His instructions because only by doing so will we experience the life He offers. A central theme of the New Testament is that of obeying the Lord. In fact, Jesus said that those who love Him obey Him. John 14:15. God is not on an ego trip relishing the idea of being obeyed; He desires our obedience because as we obey His commands, we find life. God is our creator, He designed us, and He is the one who knows exactly what we need in order to be complete. Out of His love, He chooses to make Himself known to us through His written word and through His Holy Spirit that we might experience life to the fullest. As we come to know Him and as we experience His great love for us, obeying Him becomes our desire. One may try to obey Him just because that is what he thinks he is ‘suppose’ to do, but that type of obedience falls short. So, the obvious key is that we experience His love in a personal way. There are doubtless many believers who trust God, but have not experienced the love He has for them. If that is you, then read God’s word, and as you read, ask God to reveal His love for you. He may reveal His love to you today, or tomorrow, or next year-but for sure, He will let you experience His love. In the meantime, be quick to obey His words as that is a step in the process of getting to know Him. God invites us to come to Him and He delights in us when we seek Him first. And do not forget, He “is with us always, even to the end of the age.” Let us have a heart to observe all that He has commanded us, and encourage others to do the same-that’s making disciples.
1 John 2:4-5 “The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected.”

DEATH  PRECEDES  LIFE

5/24/2018

May 24, 2018                                      DEATH  PRECEDES  LIFE
Romans 6:5-7 “For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.”
The word ‘death’ is a word we do not like to hear or even think about. The idea of death is a threat to our way of life. Perhaps the idea of dying to our self is not something we relish or joyfully anticipate; we want to be saved, but we want to live our life at the same time.  Yet, a believer will never experience the abundant blessings of God and will not experience the power of the gospel until we die to our old self. If we resist dying to our self, to who we use to be, it is because we do not understand or do not believe that blessings follow death to self. The truth is, just as a seed cannot produce fruit unless it dies and is buried, so it is with us. In Christian circles, we often here that we should ‘die to self,’ but we are not often told what it actually means to die to self.  To understand this death to self, we first must know that apart from Christ, we were by dominated by a sin nature, separated from God-we were lost and without hope. (Realizing our ‘lost’ condition is the first step toward salvation; it’s a sure sign of God’s drawing us to Himself. Those that do not know that they are lost, are content to live life according to their own wisdom.) The very act of trusting Jesus as Savior, is acknowledging that our way of life is of no value and that we need what Jesus has made available. The cross is a call to us to die to a life that is directed by our ‘self.’ God knows that life apart from Him is empty and is a sub-standard life. Jesus came that we might have life-abundant life. The key is that this abundant life is in Him, not ourselves. In God’s kingdom, there are principles that are in direct conflict with the world system. One of those principles is that death precedes life; only as we die to our ambitions, our desires, and our ways, will we find real life. It is a question of whether or not we believe in the deepest part of our being the message of the gospel, and that only Jesus holds the keys to life. Dying to self is not a one-time deal, but rather a way of life, day by day. Let us discover that only as we die to ourselves, and live as unto the Lord, will we experience life to the fullest. Contrary to the thoughts of human nature, death does indeed precede life.

CAN  THESE  BONES  LIVE ?

5/21/2018

May 21, 2018                              CAN   THESE   BONES  LIVE ?
Ezekiel 37:3-5: “And He said to me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’  And I answered, ‘O Lord God, Thou knowest.’ Again He said to me, ‘Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.’ Thus says the Lord God to these bones, ‘Behold, I will cause breath to enter you that you may come to life.’”
This passage of scripture is an account of when God took Ezekiel to the valley of dry bones and instructed Ezekiel to prophesy over the bones. God asked Ezekiel an interesting, challenging question: “can these bones live?” Even though we may not see a valley full of dry bones, nonetheless, the question God asked Ezekiel remains a relevant question for us. I think that this scripture can be applied to the one who does not know God as well as to the one who professes to know God but is not experiencing the abundant life that God offers to those who know Him. Certainly, the one who does not know God, is spiritually dead and is in need of life that only God can give. Even as believers, we have most likely experienced times when we felt like “dry bones,” void of the life of God. Times may come when we encounter great discouragement and find no hope for the future and we feel that all is in vain. Just as the Israelites experienced the devastation of being in captivity, we may feel captive to the events surrounding our lives. For the believer, “dry bones” may be a result of bad choices on our part; not walking in the ways of the Lord; not having our minds renewed; not understanding our true identity in the Lord; or any number of other reasons. The good news for believers who are experiencing a place of “dry bones” is that God is not only able, but is also desiring to breathe life into the dry bones that they may live again. God told Ezekiel to say to the dry bones: “hear the word of the Lord.” When one desires, and chooses to “hear the word of the Lord,” they will hear what brings life. In spite of the difficulties and disappointments we may be experiencing, it is for our good to “hear the word of the Lord.” This is not to say that when we hear God’s word all difficulties will be gone, but it is saying that even in difficulties, we can experience life and hope when we hear the voice of the Lord.  Desiring, or even being willing to hear what God says, is a monumental choice with far reaching consequences. Let us remember that when we hear and obey the word of the Lord, we will experience full, overflowing life regardless of our circumstances. So—yes, the dry bones can live again!
Proverbs 4:20-22: “My son, attend to My words; incline thine ear unto My sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.”

YOU  ARE  LIGHT

5/18/2018

May 18, 2018                                          YOU  ARE  LIGHT
Matthew 5:14-16: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
For many different reasons, believers can become guilty of putting their light under the peck measure,  hiding their light. We are often told to ‘be light’, but the scriptures tell us that we ARE the “light of the world.” As believes, we have been made new and given a new nature, a new spirit, and a new mind and have been adopted into the family of God. However, should we not learn of our new identity as sons and daughters of God, should we not seek Him first, and should we live in a way that is contrary to the gospel, our light becomes hidden.  The good news for us is that God has done all that is necessary in order for our light to shine in a dark world; we are lights, because God is light. It is a spiritual milestone for us when we come to know that we have been given a new nature-a nature that is of God! Because we have been joined to Him, we can now think and act in such a way that it is in keeping with the nature of God. So, as simple as it may sound, let us be about committing acts of righteousness, doing good, and letting the nature of Christ shine through our actions. We can do something to bless our neighbor; we can encourage the clerk at the store; we can provide a meal to someone in need; we can visit the sick; we can pray for someone; we can be a peacemaker; the list goes on. HOWEVER, note that we are to let our light shine ‘in such a way’ that our Father in heaven is glorified.  Even though it brings a certain sense of satisfaction to do a good deed- that is the way God designed it-in no way are we to take any credit for doing a good deed. That’s the difference. If we take the glory for what we do, then we are not being the light of the world-we are just being self-serving; the good deeds we do should flow out of our relationship with God. The ultimate freedom is to realize that God has invited us to partner with Him-to be a part of His light shining in the place we live! It’s not about us-it is all about Him. Do not fear being called a ‘do-gooder’- don’t wait until ‘you have it all together’ – don’t wait for a better opportunity - go ahead and let your light shine and glorify your Father who is in heaven. As you do, you will find that the ultimate joy in life is being the light of the Lord.
Ephesians 2:10: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

ON  THAT  DAY

5/15/2018

May 15, 2018                                    ON  THAT  DAY
2 Thessalonians 1:7-10: “and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not known God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed..”
Many live and go about that business as if “that day” will never come. It may be today, it may be tomorrow, or it may be next year, but one thing for sure, Jesus will come again. As I was reading this passage of Scripture, I thought that this perhaps may be the greatest encouragement of all to live in such a way that that we will be found to be pleasing to Him at His return. I think that at the very moment we see Him coming again, we will either be elated with joy or we will have a sense of not being ready. There is a statement in this passage that even though I believe it, I do not understand it fully. Note that He will be dealing out retribution to two groups of people-those who do not know God, and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. Certainly, it should be our desire, our passion, and our commitment to day-by-day obey the gospel of Jesus Christ. The awesome good news for those who know Him and for those who obey His gospel is that He is coming back to be glorified in His Saints! Also, instead of being fearful at His sudden return, those that have believed in Him and His gospel will marvel at His return. On ‘that day,’ things will be made right! Evil will be stopped in its track! Righteousness and peace will at long last prevail. For the first time since Adam and Eve, the kingdom of God will rule throughout the earth-and what a day that will be for all who have believed Him, who have loved Him, and who have lived according to His gospel. On ‘that day,’ Jesus will be seen with all of His mighty angels in flaming fire-can you imagine! The utterly fantastic news for believers is that relief is on the way! For now, our part is to believe Him, to be faithful, to live according to His gospel, and to seek Him first. Let us be good stewards during our stay on earth, but let us not be caught focusing on this life more than we are focusing on that day that is sure to come. Even though we face difficulties in this life, we can find strength and be of good courage because Jesus is coming again-and when He comes, all will be well!
Acts 1:10-11 “And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going up, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. They also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.’”

LOVE  NEVER  FAILS

5/12/2018

May 12, 2018                                              LOVE  NEVER  FAILS
I Corinthians 13:1: “If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.”
The thirteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians is known as the “love chapter”, and as we read this chapter, we are challenged to compare our love with the love we see depicted in this section of scripture. What the world calls “love” is a selfish love, whereas the love that flows from God is a pure and unselfish love. A selfish love is based on how the object, or person of our love makes us feel. Many friendships and marriages have ended because one or both of the parties involved “felt” that the other one did not make them happy. The love that is of God is concerned with the well-being of others. The love pictured and defined in this love chapter may seem lofty and unattainable; however, it is possible to both experience and express the love as seen in this chapter. Only the person who has received the love of God and who walks in His love can express genuine, unselfish love to others. In Romans 5:5 we find that “the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.”  Genuine love, according to this chapter, is patient; is kind, is not jealous, does not brag, does not seek its own, is not provoked, hopes all things, and endures all things (read chapter for other descriptions of love). One of the most awesome descriptions of love is that it “does not take into account a wrong suffered.” Wow! We live in a time where the prevalent attitude is that when one suffers a wrong-someone will have to pay-what a contrast! The one who is experiencing the love of God is patient, is kind, is not provoked, does not seek their own, bears all things, does not act unbecomingly, and does not take into account a wrong suffered, etc. Love is at the very heart of God-love is what it’s all about. For God so loved the world-that He gave. 1 Peter 4:8 tells us that “love covers a multitude of sins.” In John 13:35 Jesus said “all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”  1 John 3:14 tells us that “we know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren.” Romans 13:10 states that “love is therefore the fulfillment of the law.” May we not be guilty of loving as the world loves, but let us be found being conduits of the love that comes from God. God is love. We don’t have to “work” at loving others; love is a by-product of knowing God.
1 John 4:7-9: “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.”

OUR  HEAVENLY  FATHER  KNOWS

5/9/2018

May 9, 2018                                   OUR  HEAVENLY  FATHER  KNOWS
Matthew 6:30-33: “But if God so arrays the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more do so for you, O men of little faith? Do not be anxious then, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘With what shall we clothe ourselves?’ For all these things the Gentiles eagerly seek; for your Heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.”
One thing for sure, having things ‘added’ to you beats ‘eagerly seeking’ every time.  At times, we may feel that the day to day, routines of life-the nitty-gritty of life is up to us-that God is all about the spiritual and ‘higher’ things of life. There is no doubt that untold numbers of believers buy into the lie that says that it is by our sweat and toil that we get what we need and what we want-thus in reality providing for ourselves. It is indeed a subtle issue; we say we are trusting God for our needs, but yet we may find ourselves living as though it is up to us to provide. Certainly, many believers live and work under undue stress. This section of Scripture is a good reminder for us that our Heavenly Father is not far removed, but is well aware of the needs of His people. And not only aware, but also provides for our needs. There is one vital truth in this passage that must not be overlooked. I believe that it is possible to be a believer, and yet not be living according to the ways of God. The promises of this passage are conditional-as are many other promises of God. God’s promise to ‘add to’ or supply our needs, is for those believers who “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.” The amazing thing is that when we seek Him first, we find that He does supply what we need, and when we learn that He is the provider, stress subsides. Even though God is the provider, we are called to work, to take dominion, and to be creative-but all we do should flow out of our relationship with our Father. We work, we play, we live in peace, we love, and we worship Him all because we realize that He is our Father and we are His sons and daughters. Seeking Him first is an issue of our heart. What is it that we desire most in life? If it is our greatest desire to know Him, then we can rest assured that He will add to our life all that we need. (It’s another subject for another blog, but God has promised to meet our real needs-not necessarily all of our ‘wants.’ Often, it is our ‘wants’ that is the source of our stress.)
2 Corinthians 9:10: “Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God.”

REMOVING  THE  VEIL

5/6/2018

May 6, 2018                                                REMOVING  THE  VEIL
2 Corinthians 3:16-18: “but whenever a man turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.”
What we learn from these scriptures is absolutely amazing! As long as a man depends on and trust his own mental ability to find and know wisdom and truth, he is actually blinded by a veil, as it were. Even though a man may have good intentions and may seek wisdom through higher education, he remains void of true wisdom as true wisdom is found only in the Lord. What the world system refers to as wisdom is actually foolishness as we see in 1 Corinthians 3:19: “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness.’” The amazing truth is that by simply turning to the Lord, the veil that covers the heart and mind is removed. Until one turns to the Lord, the scriptures make little or no sense and appear to be irrelevant to his or her life. God’s desire, and His plan is that mankind discovers his identity and his fulfillment in Him. Whether one believes it or not, God is the only source of wisdom and He is the One who makes man complete. Any search for wisdom, identity, purpose, and completeness outside of God is done in vain. God desires that we experience life to the fullest and He has done all that was necessary for us to experience such a life. John 10:10. When knowing God is the chief desire of our heart, we can be assured that God will begin to reveal Himself to us and we will begin to be conscience of His work in us and we will experience a sense of completeness. The scriptures always bring a refreshing sense of simplicity and clarity to life. Simply by turning to the Lord, we can see. And, as just by ‘seeing’ Him, by beholding Him, we are transformed into His image! The process of being transformed into His image is a wonderful, life time process-it keeps on getting better and better. Let us not look in the wrong places; let us look unto the Lord and receive sight.
Proverbs 2:6: “For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
John 10:10: “The thief cometh not, but for the steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

AN  IMITATOR  OF  GOD

5/3/2018

May 3, 2018                                                   AN  IMITATOR  OF  GOD
Ephesians 5:1-2: “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you, and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.”
The ‘Therefore’ of this verse refers back to all that Paul had written in the first four chapters of Ephesians, and in order to grasp the importance of this ‘therefore’, one must read and meditate on these four chapters. Ephesians is a wonderful book that elaborates on the riches that God has bestowed on those who know Him as Lord and Savior; in verse 3:8 Paul refers to the “unfathomable riches of Christ.” In this book, we learn the powerful truth of what it means to be in Christ and for Christ to be in us and we learn of the awesome benefits of being adopted into the family of God. The truths presented in Ephesians cannot be grasped by the mind alone-it takes the Holy Spirit illuminating the truth of who we are as sons and daughters of God. Apart from the work of God in us, it would be totally impossible for man to be an imitator of God. However, the one who has come to know God has been transformed and made new and is able to imitate God. Ephesians, and all of the New Testament, was given to us that we might know and learn of our total new identity in Christ, to know the riches of Christ in us. Our spiritual journey begins with knowing Christ as Savior, but as we read and study the scriptures and as we seek Him, we discover that His riches are indeed “unfathomable.”  We are so use to life in a fallen world, the idea of imitating God may sound unrealistic, but that is exactly what God has in mind and that is what God has made possible for us. Rather than viewing our self as a sinner who must continually struggle with sin, let us view our self as one who has been made new-with a new mind and a heart, able to express the life of Christ in us-to imitate God. To imitate God is the ultimate opportunity and the greatest blessing one could have in this life. Understanding that we can actually imitate God is humbling because we know that we can imitate Him only because He has enabled us to do so; we could never imitate God by our own strength, but only through the Holy Spirit working in us. One of the primary ways, and one of the most powerful ways to imitate God is to walk in love, to express to all we come in contact with, the love that is of God. When our hearts are filled with the love of God, we find that we have a desire to bless others, and to do the things that please God. May the love of God be perfected in us-when it is, we will be imitators of Him.
Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”
Blessings,
