2 Thessalonians 1:7-10: “and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not known God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed..”
Many live and go about that business as if “that day” will never come. It may be today, it may be tomorrow, or it may be next year, but one thing for sure, Jesus will come again. As I was reading this passage of Scripture, I thought that this perhaps may be the greatest encouragement of all to live in such a way that that we will be found to be pleasing to Him at His return. I think that at the very moment we see Him coming again, we will either be elated with joy or we will have a sense of not being ready. There is a statement in this passage that even though I believe it, I do not understand it fully. Note that He will be dealing out retribution to two groups of people-those who do not know God, and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. Certainly, it should be our desire, our passion, and our commitment to day-by-day obey the gospel of Jesus Christ. The awesome good news for those who know Him and for those who obey His gospel is that He is coming back to be glorified in His Saints! Also, instead of being fearful at His sudden return, those that have believed in Him and His gospel will marvel at His return. On ‘that day,’ things will be made right! Evil will be stopped in its track! Righteousness and peace will at long last prevail. For the first time since Adam and Eve, the kingdom of God will rule throughout the earth-and what a day that will be for all who have believed Him, who have loved Him, and who have lived according to His gospel. On ‘that day,’ Jesus will be seen with all of His mighty angels in flaming fire-can you imagine! The utterly fantastic news for believers is that relief is on the way! For now, our part is to believe Him, to be faithful, to live according to His gospel, and to seek Him first. Let us be good stewards during our stay on earth, but let us not be caught focusing on this life more than we are focusing on that day that is sure to come. Even though we face difficulties in this life, we can find strength and be of good courage because Jesus is coming again-and when He comes, all will be well!
Acts 1:10-11 “And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going up, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. They also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.’”
