NEVER  THIRST  AGAIN

March 30, 2019                                     NEVER  THIRST  AGAIN
John 4:13-14 “Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again; but the water that I shall give Him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.’”
Jesus says what is obvious to all: drinking a glass of water will temporarily quench our thirst, but we will soon become thirsty again. Jesus was the master of using the natural, or nature, to drive home a spiritual truth. It is impossible to overstate the blessings that come we one does indeed drink of the water that Jesus gives. Jesus is THE giver of life. He came that we might have abundant life. The obvious question of these verses, the main point, is what is the water He gives and how do we drink of it. First, let us not miss the point that Jesus offers water to those who are spiritually thirsty. (By the way, let us not make the mistake by compartmentalizing life in to what is spiritual and what is physical. The spiritual has great impact on our physical life.) The analogy that Jesus is making about water is not difficult to understand. God, our Creator, designed us; He knows every intricate part of our being, including our physical bodies as well as our soul-there is nothing that He does not know. He also knows what satisfies man. Someone rightly said that we are born with a God-shaped vacuum that only God can fill. Sadly, man goes about life trying to fill the void that only God can fill. The ultimate good news for mankind is that one day, Jesus came to earth: light penetrated the darkness. All that Jesus spoke and all that He did was about the life that comes from the Father. Every word Jesus spoke was true and it was His purpose to reveal the Father’s heart for man. We drink of His water when we fully embrace every word He spoke, every truth He revealed, when we embrace Him as the one who has the keys to life. We cannot drink of His water and at the same time debate, not take seriously, or ignore His commands and His teachings. It really boils down to do we truly believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He came and died in our place, and that only He is the source of real life. God gave us His written word-a fantastic miracle-that we might know Him. Is it our life plus Jesus? Or is it that Jesus is our life? Let us cling to every word that Jesus spoke; let us have ears to hear what the Spirit of God in us is saying and let us be quick to obey every word He speaks. Let us understand that only by dying to ourselves and embracing Jesus as our life will we find life that truly satisfies, and we will experience “a well of water springing up” in the deepest part of our being.
John 7:38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scriptures said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.”
John 6:35 “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to Me shall not hunger; and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst again.’”

HAVING  AN  ABUNDANCE

March 27, 2019                                 HAVING  AN  ABUNDANCE
2 Corinthians 9: 8, 10-11 “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that always having all sufficiency in everything, you might have an abundance for every good deed;”              “Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God.”
It is not God’s intent that the life of a Christian be passive or a life lacking abundance. God is about harvest. God likes increase. God’s word is full of awesome promises for the believer, and certainly the above verses are no exception. In our routines of life, paying attention to the demands of each day, we may lose sight of the greatness and the power of God and His desire to intercede in our lives. As we read the above verses, we are forced to evaluate the focus of our hearts and also have a reality check as to what is most important to us in life. The above verses are about righteousness being expressed through us. Let it be clear that apart from God’s work in us, we are unrighteous; righteousness comes from God; He makes us righteous. We can never take credit for any good deed we may do. However, with that being said, we are to be about acts of righteousness, or good deeds because that is who God is-God is righteous and He does good, or righteous deeds. God desires for the world to see what He is like and He desires to extend His kindness to mankind. Here is where it gets good-He has chosen us to be the ones who demonstrate His nature-His kindness and His righteousness to all, even in our earthly, temporal body. The amazing promise that God makes to us is that we will always have all sufficiency in everything and an abundance for every good deed! Interestingly, some believers have a tendency to focus more on their ‘un-righteousness’ and to downplay their ‘righteousness’  because either they do not know their true identity, or they feel that by doing so, others can relate to them more easily.  In our culture, we resist saying ‘do as I do;’ yet that is exactly what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:1. Paul said to do as he did  because he was doing as Christ did-and that can be and should be our testimony as well.  Certainly we are in error if we take pride or brag about our righteousness because we are righteous only in Him, not of our own doing. It is a spiritual red-letter day for us when we embrace the truth that we represent God in the earth and that He has equipped us and enabled us to live righteously, being about the good deeds that He has ordained for us. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.’ Ephesians 2:10. God promises to give us an “abundance for every good deed” and to give us seed, and to multiply our seed that the harvest of our righteousness might be increased! And, He will enrich us in everything so that we can be liberal in our blessing others. Do we get it? Do we see what God has called us to be about? May we take Him at His word and begin to sow the seeds that He will continually supply and may our harvest be abundant.
Titus 3:14 “Our people also must learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful.”
Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Philippians 2:13 “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”

THE  SAME  POWER

3/23/2019

March 23, 2019                                    THE  SAME  POWER
Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
The joy and peace we are talking about is not something we can acquire on our own; joy, peace, and hope come only as we truly trust Him. We may without a thought say that we trust God, but do we really trust Him? Even in the most difficult times, when we do not understand why certain things happen, or when we or a loved one gets the bad news from the doctor, do we trust Him? There is a break-through, a turning point, when our trust in Him becomes the bedrock of our life, when our trust in Him is firmly set, no matter the circumstances; only by having this kind of trust can we live in the joy and peace and hope that is available to us. Once we have this unalterable trust in God our Father, we are then able to live life to the fullest. Having our trust in God does not exempt us from facing difficulties and it does not mean that we take lightly the trials that we and our loved ones face. However, we must be able to see beyond the immediate circumstances-that is the difference. Our world view must be that we believe that Jesus is Savior, that He came and gave His life for us, that He forgives our sins, that He conquered death, that He is our Father, that God has given us the Holy Spirit, that He uses all things for our good, that He comforts us, that He has given us a new heart, a new spirit, and a new mind, and that He never forsakes us. He has made us overcomers in this life; our part is to believe that we are now overcomers and walk in the truth of that. When we live as overcomers, our life is in contrast to the ways of the world. In a recent blog, THE SAME POWER part 1, we saw that being made new spiritually, knowing Jesus as Savior, and walking in our true identity in Him, impacts every aspect of our lives, including our physical being. Having and living life to the fullest is just that-full life. For the one who is walking in fellowship with God, even the ‘skies are bluer and the grass is greener’; the beauty of the sunrise and the sunset never escapes our notice; and enjoying a visit or a cup of coffee with a friend is a blessed experience-you get the point. In other words, life is a gift as well as the magnificent creation; He truly has given us all things to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17. Isaiah 55:12 sums up very well the point I want to make: “You will go out in joy and be lead forth in peace; the mountains and the hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.”  The joy that comes from knowing God as our Father is not subject to circumstances, but is a joy that abides-always. In John 16:22, Jesus said: “So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.” Jesus has risen from the dead, sorrow has gone and joy has come to those who walk in His ways; we now ‘see Him’-His Holy Spirit lives in us. Many believers needlessly struggle with such things as doubt, fear, depression, anger, regrets, etc. If this is you, then what I am about to say may sound over simplified, but it works-it’s the truth-you can do this: acknowledge that you are a child of God and choose to lay aside, or discard any actions or any thoughts that are not of God; take God as His word; place your total trust in Him; confess with your mouth that God has made you an overcomer, and then think on and do the things that please Him. Focus on Him and His word. Finally, make the choice to enjoy the life that He has given you. God does not force His life on us, but He has made it available to us; our part is to choose to embrace all that He says about Himself and about us. No matter your circumstances, joy, hope, and peace are available.
John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and have it abundantly.”

Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

IF  ANYONE  HEARS  MY  VOICE

3/20/2019

March 20, 2019                                     IF  ANYONE  HEARS  MY  VOICE
Revelation 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me.”
This is an amazing verse because it is an open, or standing invitation to us from God! We are told to ‘behold’, which means “Pay careful attention to what is to follow, it is very important.” Our acceptance or our rejection of this invitation impacts our lives in a major way and has eternal consequences. To reject this invitation is to insure a life lived apart from the One who created us, the One who holds the key to abundant life. Not to take God up on this invitation means that one is limited to living his or her life according to their own limited ability, void of the super-natural life that the believer experiences as a result of the indwelling Spirit of God; life lived without the presence of God is unfulfilling, to say the least. The good news, the greatest news ever is that He stands at the door and knocks! He comes to where we live. (I think this verse is an invitation for the one who does not know God to trust Him as Savior, but I also think it is an invitation for the believer who has wondered from God, and needs to be restored.) This verse clearly shows that God is compassionate and that He is personal; God is seeking out those that will invite Him in. The question is, the critical condition of this verse is ‘if anyone hears My voice.’ Who is it that hears His voice? In other scriptures God makes it clear that if we seek Him with our whole heart, we will find Him. If there is a secret in how we come to know Him, it is that we seek Him. To seek Him implies that we believe the word of God, the Bible, is His word to us and we read it with the intent of learning of Him. To seek Him also implies that it is our heart to obey Him and to walk in His ways. To ‘open the door’ means that we say yes to all God says about Himself and we welcome and desire His presence in us. What happens when we ‘open the door’ is almost beyond our comprehension-He comes in and we ‘dine’ together! In this sense, to dine means to enjoy being together and to fellowship with each other. The blessing is that there are no other requirements other than opening the door of our heart. Just as when a guest that we have not met before comes to our house, we spend some time getting acquainted. So it is when the Spirit takes up residence in us. His coming in is the beginning of an eternal relationship and it is a relationship that grows and matures with time. His presence in us does not guarantee a life free of trials, but His presence does mean that He will use the trials for good, to take us on to maturity in the faith. His presence also means that He will teach us of His ways and He will discipline us and an adjust us as we need it-all because He loves us and is committed to our being transformed in to His image. The goal is, the big picture is that God loves you and I and amazingly so, He wants to enjoy us. It is a major spiritual step forward for us when we realize that we were created for His pleasure! Isaiah 43:7, Revelation 4:11, Ephesians 2:10, Isaiah 43:21. He could have made us robots who would mechanically worship Him, but He did not. In His design, He gave us the power to make choices and to determine what our heart seeks. You and I have an awesome invitation; let us hear His voice and welcome Him in that we might dine together.
1 Corinthians 1:9 “God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

March 16, 2019                                       WITH  WHOM  HE  IS  PLEASED
Luke 2:10-11,13-14 “And the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’”                                                                                                                                  And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”
The announcement proclaimed in these verses is the greatest news mankind, that includes you and I, has ever heard. Can you imagine? Angels appearing and speaking to men and saying that they were bringing good news of a great joy-for all the people! And then announcing peace on earth among men with whom God was pleased? There is much in these verses that we could spend a lot of time on, but there is one truth I would like for us to focus on today. Primarily, it is about our basic, underlying view of God. As we go through life with all of its ups and downs, and as we hear so many conflicting comments about what God is like and what He expects from us, we may lose the essential truth about who God is and what He is like. It must be said that we, in this life, can never fully comprehend God; but He has revealed much about Himself to us, and it is critical that our view of Him is according to who He says He is. To have a wrong view or concept of God is to miss the blessings that come with knowing Him for who He truly is. It is one thing to have a mental agreement or understanding of who He is, but something else to know who He is in the deepest part of our being-our mind, spirit and soul. The first and the primary thing we must understand about God is that there has been a Savior born for us-you and I-who is Christ the Lord. God was not obligated to send the Savior for us, but He did so because He loves us and has compassion on us-that’s good news! (If you by chance do not know Christ as Savior, you can know Him as your Savior by believing and confessing that Jesus is the Son of God and that He came and died for you; it’s a matter of putting your trust in Him and following Him.) Another truth we must know about God is that He is pleased with us. Certainly God is not pleased when man rejects Him and goes his own way, or even when a believer lives in a way contrary to ways of God. However, God does see mankind as His creation and He desires that all come to know Him as Savior; you might say that God sees the potential of a loving relationship with those He created. At our core, we must see that though our wrong choices and wrong actions do not please Him, He is pleased with us as His created beings. Because He loves us as we are, He made a way through the sacrifice of His Son for us to be made new creations, capable of knowing Him intimately and has made it possible to have continual fellowship with Him. When we come to know His love that has been poured into our hearts and we learn of our new identity, we will by our new nature do the things that please Him-then in the fullest sense, He is indeed well pleased with us. We can take no credit for doing the things that please Him-for it is by His grace and His work in us that we are able to do such. Know that God is for you-not against you. Enjoy getting to know Him-you will find that He is good.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
Revelation 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.”

CONSIDER  YOURSELVES

3/13/2019

March 13, 2019                                            CONSDIDER  YOURSELVES
Romans 6:11-13 “Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey its lust, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.”
It sounds rather simple-‘just consider.’ Yet, that is the precise key for us if we are to live according to the gospel and the plans of God, and to live victoriously. In this case, the word consider means to ‘count as so.’ Not to consider ourselves dead to sin guarantees a life not lived according to the ways of God. You could say that the gospel and all of its promises and the truths we find there do not become experiential for us apart from us considering ourselves dead to sin. Not only are we to consider ourselves dead to sin, we also are to consider ourselves alive to God in Christ Jesus. No doubt, our consideration of these things is of upmost importance. Because of much erroneous teaching we have been exposed to on the subject of our old man being crucified with Christ, we may believe that we have to live simultaneously with both the old and new nature at work in us, making it impossible to live without sin. Concerning sin, we are quick to call such things as murder, lying, hatred, drunkenness, and etc. as sin, but at the same time not considering such things as harboring wrong thoughts, silently judging others, being critical, being unloving, insisting on our own way, etc. as sin. Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sins and He broke the power of sin that man had been subject to since the fall of man. Trusting Jesus as Savior is turning from our life and taking on His life; being baptized in water is a picture of us being buried with Him and then raised in newness. “Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:4. It is critical that we see our old self as being buried with Him, and then realizing that we were raised with Him in newness. The awesome truth is that we can “walk in newness of life,” no longer subject to the power of sin-no longer does sin have to rule in our mortal bodies! We can now present all of the members of our body-all of us-as alive unto God and instruments of righteousness. We can live and not sin. It’s not about ‘sinless perfection’ but about us living in newness. The scriptures tell us that if we sin, we have an advocate with the Father, and we are told that if we sin, we are to confess it to the Father. If we sin, it is not because Jesus death was insufficient or because it was beyond our power not to sin, but simply because we chose to sin. As simple as it sounds, let us consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to unto God and let us live as new creations, not subject to the power of sin.
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
Galatians 5:16 “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

FREE  INDEED

March 10, 2019                                            FREE  INDEED
John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
1 Peter 2:16 “Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God.”
In a tract entitled, “The Freedom of the Christian,” Martin Luther wrote, “A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.” What a blessing it is to be free, but what a tragedy it is to misunderstand freedom. As Americans, we are blessed to be able to live as a free people. However, the freedom we have in Christ and the freedom that He gives us is far greater than the freedom granted by governments-as great as that is. There are many aspects of the freedom we have as sons and daughters of God. One of the primary freedoms we have as believers is that of being set free from the power of sin; before we were joined to God, we were bound to sin. Jesus also sets us free from other bondages, such as living with a poor self-image, fear of sickness and death, regrets over past failures, harmful addictions, depression, a feeling of rejection, and other  bondages. The freedom we have in Him is personal, but it’s also more than personal. A very important aspect of freedom is that we are free to serve and bless others. In Mark 10:45 we read: “For the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.” We are free indeed when we see that the freedom we have in Christ is greater than ourselves. All though it may be inconvenient and it may cost us in time or money, there is no greater freedom than the freedom to serve and bless others-that’s what Jesus did. It is life-changing to realize and to embrace the truth that God has made us His ambassadors-His representatives-in this world-in our sphere. Even though one may be imprisoned or may live in a country where there is little or no freedom, they can nonetheless experience the freedom that Christ gives to all who follow Him. It is possible to be a believer but yet not experience this freedom we have in Him. This freedom comes as we come to know our true identity in the Lord-what it means to be made new creations. For this reason, it is imperative and necessary to read and study the scriptures in order to know God and to learn of His ways and to discover who He says we are. There is no shortcut to this process; hearing one message a week at church or on TV or internet is not sufficient. The absolute key in all of this is to have a heart to know God and a hunger for Him. He said that if we seek Him with all of our heart, we will find Him. May we learn of our true identity and let us live in the freedom He gives.
Galatians 5:13 “You, My brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge in the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”

COME  TO  ME

3/7/2019

March 7, 2019                                          COME  TO  ME
Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.”
What an invitation! The only true God, the God of creation, invites us to come to Him-as we are. There are times when our circumstances are difficult, when things around us are not what we desire. If not careful, the pressures of life wear us down. I know I often write about the fact that we are new creations and we have been made overcomers in life, and one might conclude that this verse in Matthew contradicts that fact. We must understand that being made new and being overcomers does not exempt or insulate us from trials and difficulties. The writers of the New Testament and the believers of that day certainly faced great trials. Even though our faith and trust in God remains strong in the midst of difficulties, we still need the comfort and the strength that only God can give in such times. Jesus, our Savior and our Brother, who endured suffering and even death on our behalf, understands the trials we face. This invitation reveals much about the nature of our heavenly Father. First, He welcomes us, He has open arms; He simply invites us to come to Him-that in itself is a great blessing. He has compassion on those who are weary and heavy laden and He promises to give them rest-just what they need. Note that He does not criticize them or scold them for being weary or heavy laden-He just says ‘come to Me.’ He invites us to take His yoke (His ways) upon us and to learn from Him-He desires to teach us! We may have reservations about taking on any yoke because we see a yoke as being heavy and restraining-but His yoke is easy and His load is light. Another amazing fact that we learn about God is that He is gentle and humble in heart; the God of all creation, the God of all power and authority, is not harsh, but is gentle and humble in heart! Our God is a God who has a heart to bless and to help those who call on Him-He is for us, and He knows our weaknesses. There is much that would cause us to be weary in soul, but when we go to Our Father, we find rest when our soul is weary and burdened.  Let us make sure that our view of God and our understanding of God is in keeping with who He says He is and let us take Him up on His invitation to come to Him, and let us learn from Him and find rest.
Hebrews 4:15-16 “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need.”
1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

BY  THIS  WE  KNOW

3/3/2019

March 4, 2019                                         BY  THIS  WE  KNOW
1 John 1:6-7 “If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
1 John 2:4-6: “The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does  not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him; the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.”
These verses serve as an acid test; they reveal our heart. Twice in the above passages we see that it is possible, and it’s in our power to lie. Before we denounce anyone who would lie, let us examine ourselves to make sure we are not guilty, in a subtle way, of lying. In no way am I bringing condemnation to anyone; I just want us to make sure that our life is in harmony with what we say we believe. The deception comes when we say that we are having fellowship with God, but at the same time we are walking in darkness in some area of our life. Just for example, if I harbor ill thoughts toward someone, if I am being dishonest in some way, etc., then I am guilty of lying and ‘not practicing the truth.’ At this point, we are likely to say ‘Yes I agree, but after all, I’m not perfect and God forgives my sins.” It is true that in our own strength and determination, we cannot keep the commands of God, but here is the good news: when ‘the love of God has been truly perfected’ in us, we discover that it becomes our deepest desire to live in such a way that the life we live pleases the Lord, and we discover that the Holy Spirit enables us to live such a life. The fruit of knowing that we are in Him and abiding in Him is that we will ‘walk in the same manner as He walked.’ It is knowing and experiencing the love of God for us in a personal way that makes all the difference; it is His love that transforms us and makes us new. You might ask how is it that I can know His love in such a personal way. I don’t know of three easy steps of how to know God’s love, but I do know that it starts with having a desire in our heart to know Him. If one desires to know Him, then it stands to reason that he would begin to read and study the written word that God gave in order that we might come to know Him. It’s good to worship, pray, and attend church, but those are not substitutes when it comes to knowing God. In His written word, we discover what God is like, His nature, His likes and dislikes, His plans for us, His wisdom, His power, His forgiveness, and most importantly, what He accomplished on our behalf through the death and resurrection of Jesus. So, let the life we live be a reflection of the truth of the gospel; let us indeed have fellowship with our Father and with each other. Remember the acid test: if we truly know Him and the love He has for us, keeping His commandments will be a natural outflow of our love for Him.
John 14:21 “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself unto him.”

LIVING  AND  ACTIVE

March 1, 2019                                LIVING  AND  ACTIVE
Hebrews 4: 12-13: “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are laid open and bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.”                                                                                                                                                                        This is another passage of scripture that when believed, will impact our lives in a powerful way. It’s easy to read these verses in a casual manner and thus miss the astonishing truth presented. As we read this scripture with our “antenna up”, and as we begin to meditate on what is being said, we will be amazed at what we read. Does the word of God, the Bible, actually have the power to do what it says it does in the above verses?  If it does-and indeed it does- then every thought, every action and even every intention is “laid open” before God.  The word of God is living and active and sharp and it pierces to the deepest part of man. Reading the word of God is unlike reading any other book in that the bible is not just for information, but transformation from the inside out. The Bible is a book of history, but it is much more than history in that it is living and active. Being living and active, it speaks to the current- the need of the moment- and it reveals present thoughts and intentions and motives of the heart. Reading the word of God as more than a history book, we come face to face with the fact that God is all- knowing and nothing is hidden from Him. And as we read the word of God, we come face to face with the truth of who we are and we discover that He not only knows the words we speak, but He even knows the intents of our heart! It is indeed a sobering thought to realize that every aspect of our life is “laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.” As our life is “laid bare before Him” we may discover things about ourselves that neither we nor God likes. Even though it may be an unpleasant experience, God lays our life bare before Him for a good purpose and that purpose is all about transforming us to His image. God is not angry with us and He is not out to punish us, but is out to transform us into His image. To achieve His purpose of transforming us, He goes right to the intentions of our heart because the intentions of our heart are the determining factor of who we really are-how we live life. The scriptures teach that we, as Christians, will one day have to give a full account to God of the life we lived on earth. God paid the ultimate price in order for us to be born again, to be transformed, and thus we will be held accountable for how we dealt with His invitation and His provision to be transformed. Not to be transformed by the life of Jesus is really an insult to God (if God could be insulted) and it greaves Him greatly. The good news is that “the day of accounting” can be a glorious day because it is possible to hear Him say to us “well done, thy good and faithful servant.”  Whether or not we hear “well done” is dependent on the life we live here on earth. Whether or not we hear “well done”, is up to us because we must choose to respond to His drawing us to Himself and we must choose to work with Him as He works out His plans in us. So, the fact that our life is laid bare before Him is a good thing and it is sure proof of His love for us. It can be that when the intentions of our hearts are revealed, we will find that they are pleasing to the Lord-and that’s the way it should be. God is committed to having us transformed into His likeness, and to do this, He is in the process of exposing the intentions of our hearts and at the same time, giving us a new heart that resembles His heart. He is rooting out the old and putting in the new and it is our part to work with Him as He is about this work.
1 Peter 2:1-3: “Therefore, putting aside all malice and all guile and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.”
