Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.”
What an invitation! The only true God, the God of creation, invites us to come to Him-as we are. There are times when our circumstances are difficult, when things around us are not what we desire. If not careful, the pressures of life wear us down. I know I often write about the fact that we are new creations and we have been made overcomers in life, and one might conclude that this verse in Matthew contradicts that fact. We must understand that being made new and being overcomers does not exempt or insulate us from trials and difficulties. The writers of the New Testament and the believers of that day certainly faced great trials. Even though our faith and trust in God remains strong in the midst of difficulties, we still need the comfort and the strength that only God can give in such times. Jesus, our Savior and our Brother, who endured suffering and even death on our behalf, understands the trials we face. This invitation reveals much about the nature of our heavenly Father. First, He welcomes us, He has open arms; He simply invites us to come to Him-that in itself is a great blessing. He has compassion on those who are weary and heavy laden and He promises to give them rest-just what they need. Note that He does not criticize them or scold them for being weary or heavy laden-He just says ‘come to Me.’ He invites us to take His yoke (His ways) upon us and to learn from Him-He desires to teach us! We may have reservations about taking on any yoke because we see a yoke as being heavy and restraining-but His yoke is easy and His load is light. Another amazing fact that we learn about God is that He is gentle and humble in heart; the God of all creation, the God of all power and authority, is not harsh, but is gentle and humble in heart! Our God is a God who has a heart to bless and to help those who call on Him-He is for us, and He knows our weaknesses. There is much that would cause us to be weary in soul, but when we go to Our Father, we find rest when our soul is weary and burdened. Let us make sure that our view of God and our understanding of God is in keeping with who He says He is and let us take Him up on His invitation to come to Him, and let us learn from Him and find rest.
Hebrews 4:15-16 “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need.”
1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”
