HE  WHO  OVERCOMES

June 28, 2017                                       HE  WHO  OVERCOMES
Revelation 12:11:
“And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even to death.”                                                                    Revelation: 3:21: “He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.”
I would guess that the book of Revelation is the least read book of the New Testament, and I suppose that it is because it is perceived as a book difficult to understand. Certainly, there is some mystery in the account of what John saw when God allowed him to go beyond the natural, and see into heaven. Even though there is some mystery, and perhaps some things we may not fully understand as we read this book, there is much that is easily understood and the over-riding message of the book is evident. Two very obvious truths from Revelation is that God has absolute rule, and that all of heaven worships Him. We also see Jesus being honored as the one that secured the salvation of those who received Him as the Son of God and as Savior. In the midst of the mystery and all the wonder of Revelation, there is a clear and straight-forward message for all believers that has great consequences depending on whether or not we as believers ‘heed’ the message. Throughout this book, there are many references to those who or overcomers in this life on earth. To me, Revelation is like a summary of all of the scriptures of the New Covenant and it magnifies the calling we have to be captivated by, and live by the gospel of the kingdom of God. Because the life we live here has eternal consequences, we cannot afford to take the gospel in a casual manner. Over and over we read “to him who overcomes.”  The ‘overcoming’ that we have to do is to overcome sin and all the tactics of Satan to defeat us, just as Jesus did. “He who overcomes, I will grant to Him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.” Revelation 3:21. Believers must grasp the fact that God has saved us and has made us new-but the story does not end there! Because we have been saved and made new, we must now choose to walk in our salvation and newness, reflecting the very nature of God-and when we do, we are overcomers. It’s a matter of being who we are as children of God. Whether we know it or not, we are in a continual, major conflict. The world, and Satan, are doing all in their power to cause us to live according to self, and not according to the Spirit of God that has been given to us. We must heed the instructions of 1 Peter 5:8: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”  Life on earth is the proving ground for our faith. God has called us to be overcomers in this life, and He has equipped us to be just that. Rise up and take your battle station-the war is on!
Revelation 3:5:
“He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels.”

PRACTICE

June 25, 2017                                                    PRACTICE
Philippians 4:9:
“The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things and the God of peace shall be with you.”
It is interesting to note that there were some believers who had “learned and received and heard and seen” the truth of the gospel through the life and ministry of Paul. Can we say that we are currently learning, receiving, hearing, and seeing the truths of the gospel through our own study and through others whose lives are examples and expressions of the gospel? I fear that at times we may over ‘spiritualize’ the teachings of scripture, causing us to miss the practical implications and instructions of the scriptures. Also, over spiritualizing the scriptures, can, and often does, lead to of an unhealthy view of ‘waiting on God,’ where we neglect the responsibility we have in our spiritual health. In the Old Covenant, we have the accounts of creation and how God chose, and how God dealt with the nation of Israel to reveal His purposes for mankind. In the Old Covenant, we find the Law that God gave His people, but we also find that they could not keep the law, thus, sacrifices were necessary for the forgiveness of sins. The Old Covenant was a shadow of, or pointed to, the New Covenant that God would make with those who believe and receive the message of Jesus. The New Covenant is based on the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, the Savior of all who trust in Him. Under the New Covenant, each believer has been made new, and has been given the Holy Spirt, and it is the Holy Spirit that gives the believer the desire and the power to live according to the teachings and revelations found in the New Covenant. However, God did not make us robots, but gave us a part to play in our spiritual growth. A great portion of the scriptures in the New Covenant are actually instructions and admonitions on how we are to live as the sons and daughters of God. The New Covenant is the book of life for all who believe. Every instruction given in the scriptures are given out of the love God has for His people and they are for our good. God does not wish to rob us of life, but desires we experience life to the fullest, and He even gave us the ultimate Manuel, the Bible, on how to live as sons and daughters of God. Let us this day be sure to practice the instructions that God has given-if we do, His peace will be with us!
James 1:25
: But, whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it-not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it-they will be blessed in what they do.”
Luke 11:28: “He replied, ‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.’”

June 22, 2017                                                    FOLLOW   ME
Philippians 3:17:
“Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.”
1 Corinthians 11:1: “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.”
Many would consider one to be proud or boastful if they said to “follow me,” or “do as I do,” especially when referring to how they were living the Christian life. So often, in the church, it is in vogue to take the ‘humble’ position of saying that “I often fail when it comes to following the Lord,” or “I too often act out of my flesh,’ or “that I certainly do not have it all together when it comes to my spiritual life.” There are elements of truth in such statements, but they also reveal a misunderstanding of the radical transformation that the gospel produces when it is fully embraced. The truth is, that it is God’s plans and His desire that our life resemble the life that Christ demonstrated while on earth. The scriptures make it clear that Jesus is our example of how we are to live in this present life. Colossians 3:13, 1 Peter 2:20-22, 1 John 2:6. Whenever our life is not in keeping with the truths of the gospel, it is because we have allowed the ‘flesh’ to rule instead of living according to the Spirit. Most likely, every believer has at some point known the frustration of trying in their own strength to live the ‘Christian life.’ The truth is, that living the Christian life as God designed, can be lived only by walking according to the Spirit within us and by the power of the gospel being experienced. When we become captivated by, or encompassed by the gospel of God and His kingdom, we will find ourselves being transformed and we will find ourselves walking in His ways, not by our own strength and will power, but by knowing out true identity in Him-this is the good news of the gospel! In reality, to say “follow me as I follow Christ” comes from a humbled heart as it is saying to follow me only because I am not following my ‘self’ life in the flesh, but because I am following Christ. One of the greatest needs in the church today is for believers to discover, or rediscover, the awesome, all-powerful, life changing, power of the gospel-the word of God. God is not about ‘refurbishing’ us, or making us better, but about totally transforming us to the extent that we become like Him! This may sound like a stretch for us, but the power of the gospel is not limited, but is able to transform us into His likeness. So, quit trying to be what you think God wants you to be, and start discovering who God says you already are in Him! The greatest and the most fulfilling life is realized when we become imitators of Christ out of the new nature that He has given us.
1 John 2:5-6:
“but whoever keeps His word, in Him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.”

FORGETTING  AND  REACHING

June 20, 2017                                           FORGETTING  AND  REACHING
Philippians 3:12-14:
“Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead. I press on toward the gold for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
What a healthy view of life!  Focusing on past failures, disappointments and hurts rob us of the present as well as the future.  I dare say that there is no adult alive that does wish they had done some things differently, and that do not have some regrets from the past. These verses address one of the issues that leads to spiritual stagnation for the believer-that of looking back. There is a tendency to reach a spiritual plateau when we dwell only on the fact that we have been saved, that our sins are forgiven, and that we are going to heaven when we die. Salvation, having our sins forgiven, and going to heaven when we die are indeed wonderful blessings, however, there is much more to the Christian life. As believers, we have been redeemed and we are complete in Christ, but Paul understood that there is a continuing work that Christ wants to do in the believer, after salvation. As believers, we have a ‘calling’ on our lives, and we have certain responsibilities in seeing that the calling that God has for us is realized in this earthly life. God has particular plans for each of us individually, and it should be our goal to work with God in seeing those plans come to fruition. The over-riding, all important calling that God has for every believer is that of being transformed into His image, even in our earthly life. At salvation, we are made new; we are given new hearts, minds, and spirits that reflect the nature of God. At salvation, we are immature, but none the less able to express the new person that we are. From the moment of salvation, our life focus should be set on becoming more and more like Christ, being transformed into His likeness. Looking back and dwelling on past failures, and even past successes, takes our focus off the present opportunity to continue being transformed. To not be being transformed into His image, is to miss the purposes of God- it is an insult to the Spirit of Grace. Hebrews 10:29.  As believers, we are the bride of Christ, and as His bride, we are to be preparing for His soon return. God is calling a people to Himself, for His own good pleasure. Just as Paul did, let us not look back, but let us press on the “upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Hebrews 12:1: “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience that is set before us,”

MERE  MEN ?

6/17/2017

June 17, 2017                                                       MERE  MEN ?
1 Corinthians 3:1-3:
“And I brethren, could not speak to you as spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to babes in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealously and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men?                                                                                         2 Corinthians 7:1: “Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”
Some have the belief that the condition of our spiritual health is solely the responsibility of God. This misconception hampers one’s spiritual growth and maturity due to the fact that he or she is ‘waiting’ on God, or the Spirit, to do what they are called to do. It is clear from these verses, and others, that believers have some responsibility for their spiritual well-being. Scripture makes it clear that we are “to work together with Him” as He works in us. (2 Corinthians 6:1) Certainly we are to follow the leading of the Spirit, but perhaps there has been some misunderstanding of what it means to be led by the Spirit. One of the roles of the Spirit within is to help us understand the word of God and to empower us to obey the commands God has given. When the bible gives a command or admonition to do a certain thing, we do not need to ‘wait on the Spirit’ to ‘lead’ us to do it, but are to simply act on the command. The verses above are primarily about our spiritual maturity; it is possible to be a believer, and yet not be maturing in the faith, remaining “babes in Christ.” Paul was writing to certain believers who were not maturing, but who were continuing to live in the flesh, and Paul could not address them as ‘spiritual men.’ As believers, we live according to the flesh, or we live according to the Spirit, and there is no middle ground. As a believer, living according to the flesh is living with self in control, ignoring the direction of the Spirit and the heart of God. To live in the flesh, is to grieve the Spirit of God who lives in us. “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30. We are to lay aside, to get rid of, the works of the flesh-all the things that do not please the Lord. Simply put, as believers, we need to see to it that we are ‘working with God’ as He leads us and calls us to be maturing in the faith, to be becoming more like Him in all of our life. Because the Spirit of God lives in us, we have the power to lay aside all that is unlike Christ, and we have the power to put on that which is like Christ. May each of us have as our major priority, our spiritual maturity-it will not happen by accident, without us doing our part of the process.
Ephesians 4:22-24:
“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Read the remaining verses in this chapter to see what we are to put off.)

BE  DOERS

6/15/2017

June 14, 2017                                                    BE  A  DOER
James 1:21-22, 25:
“Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted which is able to save your souls. But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.     But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does.”
We tend to complicate and over-analyze. 2 Corinthians 11:3 is a warning for believers not to “be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” The good news of the gospel is that what God has spoken in His word, and what He demonstrated in Christ, is easily understood by the one who belongs to Him and His ways are not burdensome. “For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.” Matthew 11:30.  One of the works of the Holy Spirit in each believer is to reveal the truth of the scriptures and to give believers the power to live out the scriptures. It may be that seeing God’s word as ‘complicated’ serves as an excuse for not living by the scriptures. The book of James makes the point that there is a connection between faith and obedience to the word, as seen in the familiar passage, James 2:20: “But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?” The simple, over-riding truth is that God has spoken through the scriptures that we might experience life as He designed by keeping His commandments. As these verses point out, we are to receive the word in such a way that it is ‘implanted’ in us. It is also interesting to see the admonition to believers to “put aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness.” At salvation our sins are forgiven and we are made new, but then starts the maturing process in which we lay aside those things that the Holy Spirt points, those things that are not in keeping with the ways of the Lord. If we are ‘healthy’ spiritually, then it is our desire not only to study the scriptures, but to also put in to practice what we learn from the scriptures. The scriptures are full of instructions concerning how we are to conduct ourselves in daily life. We do not keep His word in order to be accepted by Him, but because He has already accepted us as His sons and daughters and now because we love Him, we desire to do the things that please Him. If we know Him as the Father that He is, obeying His every word becomes our hearts desire.  When we abide by, and become a doer of the ‘law of liberty,” that is, the word of God, we are blessed in what we do. This is not a promise that if we keep His word we will have no trials in life, but it does mean that even in the trial, we will experience His blessings. Finally, James refers to the word of God as the ‘law of liberty,’ and indeed it is just that because the keeping of His word out of our love for Him brings about the ultimate freedom we can experience. True freedom is not found in living for self, but in living unto the Lord. God, being our creator and designer, knows exactly what we need to be free, and in His word we discover our true design and identity, and when we do, we experience true freedom.
Matthew 7:24:
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

SEE  TO  IT

6/12/2017

June 12, 2017                                                SEE  TO  IT
Colossians 2:2-3, 8:
“that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.    See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.”
One cannot attain wisdom through education or through experience due to the fact that true wisdom is actually hidden, and it is hidden in Christ. This truth is in total opposition to the world system and the “tradition of men.” As believers, we must be alert to the fact that we are daily surrounded by a world that is constantly projecting and proclaiming a false wisdom. The essence of the world system and the “tradition of men” is that of living according to one’s own dictates with self in control. With self in control, we pursue whatever beings pleasure to self. Self likes to get rather than give, self places value on appearance, riches, reputation, brags on being a self-made individual, being the best, and basically says that “if it makes you feel good, do it,”- the list goes on. The trouble is that self can never be satisfied. Proverbs 14:12 is a sobering truth-“There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” Paul understood that believers could be taken captive by the philosophy of the world and it was his passion to instruct and admonish believers to walk in the ways of the Lord, and not according to the ways of the world. The interesting truth is that the longings in the heart of man can be fulfilled only in Christ, because as this verse tells us, that in Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” The scriptures and the ways of the Lord are not a prohibition on enjoying life, but rather are the door that leads to life. In John 10:10, Jesus said, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” Let us be quick to recognize the lies of the enemy that would tell us to focus on making ourselves happy, and let us “see to it” that we are not taken captive by the philosophy of the world. Rather, let us “see to it” that we are finding the wisdom and all the wealth and all the assurance that comes from knowing Christ.
1 Corinthians 1:30:
“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, just as it is written, ‘Let him who boast, boast in the Lord.’”

TRANSFERRED

June 10, 2017                                               TRANSFERRED
Colossians 1:13-14:
“For He delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
When we think about living in a ‘kingdom,’ our thoughts may go back to a time when kings, or a particular country, ruled a given territory. However, in our day, and in all of history, there have been only two kingdoms-the kingdom of darkness (the world) and the kingdom of God. Satan, who was known as Lucifer in heaven, rebelled against God and was cast out of heaven and the presence of God. (This rebellion did not catch God by surprise as He always knew it would happen, and He had a plan as to how He would use Satan to further His purposes!)  It was not an accident that Satan was cast out to planet earth, the same place that God would in His timing create man. Since the rebellion and the expulsion of Satan from heaven, there have been two kingdoms on earth. Adam and Eve had not been on the scene very long before they encountered the kingdom of darkness when Satan enticed them to disobey God by eating of the forbidden fruit, and when they yielded to Satan’s tactics, sin entered the heart of man and since Adam and Eve, all are born with a sin nature—you know the story. Even though Satan, the father of all evil, masquerades as an angel of light as seen in 2 Corinthians 11:14, his kingdom is one of total spiritual darkness and is still in rebellion against God. All who do not know God as their Savior, are part of the kingdom of darkness, because only in God’s kingdom is there light. Note that one can be living in the kingdom of darkness and still look like a ‘pretty nice fellow.’ The essence of living in darkness is living according to one’s own dictate, with self in control. The essence of living in the kingdom of God is having died to self and living by the life if Christ who is present in each believer. Those who are in the Kingdom of God have been made new creations with new hearts, new minds and new spirits. By the working of God, believers have been given the greatest transfer one could experience-transferred from darkness to the kingdom of God! Now, we must saturate ourselves with the good news of this kingdom of God and choose to walk in the light. “But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.” How blessed we are to live in the kingdom of light-the kingdom of God.
Ephesians 5:8:
“For you once were in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”
1 Peter 2:9: “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

June 7, 2017                                                    A  LIVING  SACRIFICE
Romans 12:1-2:
“I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
In our thinking and in our view of life, we tend to divide our life in to two categories-physical and spiritual. We have physical life and we have spiritual life, but the physical life we live is to be a reflection of, or directed by our spiritual life. Scriptures make it abundantly clear that our salvation impacts the whole person-body, soul, and spirit. Throughout the New Testament we find instructions concerning how to live in the physical in such a way that our life becomes a picture, or testimony of what God is like. The world has a system of life that is in opposition to life in the kingdom of God, and unless we are being transformed by the renewing of our mind, we will find ourselves conforming to the world. This renewing of our mind is the key when it comes to being transformed into the image of God. When we allow the mind to ‘run its own course,’ we will find ourselves in a downward spiral spiritually and mentally as well. The renewal of our mind is not just a matter of trying to be more positive in our thinking. To renew the mind is an act of turning our thoughts to the truth that is found only in God’s word.  The instruction to renew our mind is based on the assumption that we have at least some knowledge of the truth-the word of God. Thus, if are going to have a renewed mind, it is essential that we spend time reading and taking in the truth we find in the scriptures, and then setting out thought life on that truth. Once our thinking and our beliefs are built on the foundation of God’s word, our actions will be in harmony with God’s word. For example, in God’s word we are told that it is better to give than to receive, and when we give as the Lord directs, we are presenting our bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, and we are worshiping God at the same time. And, as we give, we find that it is the will of God, and it is good, acceptable and perfect. If we are being conformed to the world, then we will act out of the mind-set that it is better to get, than to give. So, let us be about taking in the word of God, and then let us keep our minds in a renewed state by keeping our focus the truth of God’s word in order that our bodies will be a living and holy sacrifice.
2 Corinthians 10:5:
“We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.”

ABOUNDING  IN  HOPE

6/4/2017

June 4, 2017                                          ABOUNDING  IN  HOPE
Romans 15:13-14:
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. And concerning you, my brethren, I myself am also convinced that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able also to admonish one another.”
Most would agree that we live in perilous times, and you could also say that the early believers lived in perilous times. However, this passage of scripture, along with many others, speak of the reality of experiencing hope in the midst of troubles. Obviously, there is a difference in the hope that man can have in his or her own strength, and the hope that comes from a belief in all that God has done and said. A man-based hope is dependent on certain circumstances; his hope is fragile and fails at some point. On the contrary, the hope that comes from God is not dependent on circumstances but is based on the faithfulness, and the power of God. The hope that is accompanied by joy and peace comes as a result of believing God. We over-use, and take lightly the word ‘believe.’ By definition, to believe, is to ‘accept something as true.” If we say we ‘believe in God,’ and yet we do not know what He has accomplished on our behalf and we do not know the promises He has made to those who love Him, our ‘belief’ as well as our hope is shallow. The biblical idea of hope is not that everything is going to perfect, or even as we desire things to be, but that in the midst of difficulties, we can experience a hope that transcends the present trials and difficult circumstances. Adverse events occur that are beyond our control, and people may fail us, but the plans and purposes God has for us do not fail-they come to pass. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble.” Psalm 46:1. It is God’s desire that we abound in the hope that comes as result of believing what He has revealed in His word and what He speaks in our heart through His Holy Spirit. We may not understand how God is going to use the difficulties we experience for our good, but regardless, let us choose to put our total faith and belief in Him knowing that He is in the process of transforming us and He is causing all things to work together for our good, provided we love Him and are called according to His purpose. (See Romans 8:28).
Isaiah 40:31:
“but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.”
Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
