Ephesians 1:17-19b “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power……”
Man, by nature, is prone to believe that it is through his learning that he becomes successful; he believes that knowledge is power. It’s true that in the world, knowledge is power. Even in Christian circles, there is a prevailing belief that if we study enough, memorize enough scripture, read the current popular best-sellers, listen to enough sermons, we will finally arrive at being ‘spiritual’. Certainly, to be able to learn, to acquire knowledge is a blessing from God; to learn of God’s creation-how and why things work as they do is a life-long pursuit. As believers, we are not just humans, we have been made new creations; we are now spiritual beings even though we live in flesh and bones in a physical world. Someone rightly said that ‘we are not a body with a spirit, but a spirit with a body.’ As spiritual beings, we have access to the wisdom of God. In fact, He lives in us and “in Him we live and have our being.” Acts 17:28. In order for us to live life as God designed, we desperately need God revealing truth to us.    We know that revelation comes from God; it is His prerogative to give revelation when and how He decides. A personal testimony to illustrate this point. Since a young man, I believed with all my heart and mind that God was my Father. However, one night, much later in life, I simply looked up into a star filled sky, and I heard ever so clear in my spirit, these words: “The God that made those stars is your Father.” Wow! In a minute’s time, life changed. The first thoughts I had was what do I have to fear-or worry about-nothing! That was a case of God revealing His truth to me. I believe that the all important factor in receiving revelation from God is our heart. If it is the deepest desire of our heart to know God, and we seek Him first, He will reveal Himself to us. If we truly want to know Him, we will find ourselves reading His word because it is in His word that He reveals Himself and in His word, we learn of Him.  Reading His word out of a sense of duty has little or no benefit. When our primary focus in life is to know Him, He will bring His word to life, He will give us understanding and will reveal truth to us, will direct out steps in life, and we will experience life to the fullest. Let us be learners, let us study, let us explore, let us be diligent, but let all we do be done under the banner of desiring to know God.
1 Timothy 2:15 “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Jeremiah 29:13 “You will seek Me and find Me when you seem Me with all your heart,”

GIVING

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
2 Corinthians 9:6-8 “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
Proverbs 18:16 “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
God is a giver, and once we understand our new identity as sons and daughters of God, that we have been made new, that we that we have been joined to Him, we also become givers.  In 2 Peter 1:4 is an amazing verse in that we learn that we “may become partakers of the divine nature,” and giving is a part of God’s nature.  If we revert to our old nature-who we use to be-we begin to focus on getting; but if we walk according to the Spirit-our new nature-we focus on being a giver just as our Father is a giver. Giving is not just about giving money or financial support, all though that may be what we do as God provides. As we walk in the new us, giving becomes a way of life-an attitude of the heart and the mind; we have a spirit of giving and it becomes evident in all we do. When we give out of our new nature, we do so not begrudgingly, reluctantly or under compulsion, but with a sense of cheerfulness. When we understand giving in the kingdom of God, we give because we want to give; we enjoy blessing others, and as we give, we are blessed. I have often heard well-meaning ministers say that ‘We should prove what God says and give-and watch how God gives back to us.’ There is an element of truth in that, but also an element of error in that view. If we ‘give to get,’ we miss the point. We give out of who we are in Christ whether we get something in return or not. At the same time, when we give out of our new nature, we are blessed because we are about the Fathers business; being about what God has for us to do is in and of itself a blessing. There is an endless number of ways to give, but just to name a few, we can give-a kind word, write a note of encouragement, buy someone a meal, help with a project, share a scripture, pray for someone, visit the sick, meet an urgent financial need if God so leads you to do so, teach a class-and the list goes on. Again, giving is not something we decide we should do, not just an act of our will (it is in an act of the will when we are walking by the Spirit-we ‘will’ to do what the Spirit leads us to do.) We give because that is a part of the new nature that God gives us. There may be times when you feel you cannot afford to give the time or money, but if the Spirit is prompting you to give, go ahead and give-God will meet your needs.
2 Corinthians 9:10 “Now He who supplies seeds to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.”
Acts 20:35 “…….It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Galatians 5:22-24: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
This verse, like many verses, contradict the very nature of man, and at the heart of this contradiction is the fact that man believes that it is by his own effort that change happens. It is true that a non-believer can choose to make some changes by his own willpower; he can choose to make a new habit to exercise, or to change his diet, etc. What man is totally incapable of doing is giving himself a new heart whereby he becomes a partaker of the nature of God. The above verse is an awesome verse in that it describes what the Holy Spirit produces in each believer, which actually amounts to a change of nature for the believer. The fruit of the Spirit as listed in this verse is not something we must work at, or obtain through our diligence and our best effort. Even for the believer, it may be difficult to grasp the fact that the fruit of the Spirit is a package deal-we have it, or we don’t have it. For example, we have heard others say, and we have likely said: “I need to work on self-control” or “I need to be more joyful,” or whatever.  When He is in control of our lives, the fruit of the Spirit is the by-product. It is important to realize that this verse describes the “fruit” of the Spirit, not the “fruits.” This may be a stretch even for the believer, but if you have one, you have all of the fruit of the Spirit-if you have joy, then you have faithfulness, etc.  As a believer, at any given time we are either living the self-life, or we are living by the Spirit. It is possible for a believer to “quench the Spirit” and revert back to living according to the flesh, but note the warning in this verse: “those who belong to Jesus Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Even though God gives us a new heart, a new mind, and He puts His Spirit within us, there is still a maturing process to take place in the believer, but even as a “babe in Christ,” one can know and experience the fruit of the Spirit. As we learn to walk in the Spirit and as we learn to hear and recognize His voice, we will find that the fruit of the Spirit being experienced becomes a way of life. Not only does the Spirit produce good fruit in us, He also corrects us when we need to be corrected, He guides us, He gives wisdom, He intercedes for us, He reveals truth to us, and much more. The ultimate freedom we could ever experience becomes a reality when we live our lives with the Holy Spirit of God at the helm. The Spirit will not force His way, but is anxious for us to invite Him to take full control of our lives and yield to what He wants to do in us and through us. Yielding to Him does not mean that we have no part to play; our part is to cooperate with what He is doing in us and to respond to His promptings. Let us thank God for the fruit that the Spirit brings to our lives and may walking in the Spirit become a way of life.

Colossians 2:2-4 “that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I say this in order that no one may delude you with persuasive argument.”
What are who are we living for? That is a key question and it requires some soul-searching to give an honest answer. The ways of the world is one thing, and the ways of God is something else altogether different. Life in the world is about self-preservation and self-satisfaction, about getting things, and being liked and well respected, etc. If one does not have a vital relationship with God, then it is only natural to have self as number one; with that being the case, we must be careful not to judge or critize, because that is all they know. The passages above tell us that there is a ‘wealth’ that we can attain. This wealth is not gold and silver, but something far more valuable. The wealth that does not diminish or rust is in fact, having “full assurance of understanding.” Nothing this world offers even comes close to that of having full ‘assurance and understanding’ that in Christ are hidden “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” AND He lives in us! Simply believing in our minds that this is true is not sufficient-we need ‘full assurance’ and ‘understanding’ in order to attain to true wealth. Christ in us is “God’s mystery;” we cannot grasp this truth will human intellect-it must be revealed to us by God. Since it requires God’s revelation for us to attain to the wealth-to experience “God’s mystery,” then what are we to do? That is an excellent question for sure. There are no three easy steps we can take in order to attain to the wealth of being assured and having an understanding of this mystery of God-which Christ is in us. However, I believe that we can put ourselves in a position where we become good candidates for receiving revelation from God. There are several places in scripture that tell us that if we seek Him with our whole heart, we will find Him. Colossians 3:2 tells us to set our minds “on things above.” Matthew 5:6 says: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” It really boils down to our heart; if we want to know God, we will read His word with the motivation being to learn of Him and to discover our identity in Him. I believe that we can direct our hearts toward God; when we do, He will begin to reveal Himself to us. Many places in scripture speaks of the heart of man. Let us set out heart on knowing Him and attaining to the wealth of full assurance and understanding that Christ lives in us.
Colossians 1:27 “to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
2 Corinthians 13:5 “Or do you not realize about yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you?”
Colossians 3:3 “For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 “To this end also we pray for you always that our God may account you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power; in order that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
If you are a believer, do you know that you are called by God? We are called from a life lived apart from God, a life of darkness, and a life lived according to our own ways and the ways of the world. We are called to live as new creations by the power and presence of Christ in us. Being called of God, we have a higher purpose in life; we are now His ambassadors; we can now reflect His glory in all we do; the old things have gone, new things have come. There is nothing greater than that of knowing God has called us; His calling us has huge implications and possibilities. Because being called by God is the highest calling we could ever receive, it should be our deepest desire to live in a way that is worthy of our calling. His calling is to be expressed and worked out in the ‘nitty-gritty’ of life-in the things we do every day. Philippians 1:27 tells us to conduct ourselves “in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ,” The things we do, the meditations of our hearts, and the things we think about should all be under the banner of His calling. Part of His calling is that we are to be about good works, as seen in Ephesians 2:10: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Because He is good, we are to be about goodness-not to earn His approval, but because that is who we are in Him. Because we come to know God through faith, we are to be a people who live day-by-day with faith in God; and faith that He is working out His purposes in us and in those around us. His calling includes us being adopted in to His family; we now live in this fallen world as sons and daughters of God with a new identity, a new purpose, and a new power to walk worthy of Him who called us. He did not call us and then say “Do your best to walk in My ways-good luck.” His calling includes equipping us, and He equips us by giving us His Holy Spirt who enables us to walk in His ways. Let us realize that we have the opportunity to walk worthy of our Father in all we do. Life does not have to be mundane; life is filled with opportunities to reflect the work of God in us.
Colossians 1:10 “so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”

Psalm 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”
Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellence or praiseworthy-think about such things.”
Our heart is the secret place of our life; what we think about in the privacy of our heart defines who we are.  As the above verse from Proverbs tells us, what we do flows out of our heart. With this being true, it is a no-brainer to say that what we dwell on in our hearts and what we set as the desires of our heart is most crucial. The thoughts and meditations of the heart produces fruit-good fruit or bad fruit. All of us have at some time had wrong thoughts and times when our hearts have been wrong. No matter what our past ‘heart-life’ has been, we are not locked in to the past. (Someone said “Let us be more defined by our future than by our past.”  Amen to that!) Because the Holy Spirit lives in us, we have the power to direct our hearts; we can take dominion in all of life-we must know that and act on that truth. We must guard our hearts.  If we want our heart to be right, then we must start by choosing to think on the things of God, what He says in His word, choosing to do the things that please Him, and think on things that build up. It may sound old fashion, but we cannot neglect reading the word of God because in His word we come to know Him and learn of His plans and purposes and we find our identity in Him. Once we discover our true identity in Him, our thoughts will begin to reflect our new identity-the new person we are. The acid test that reveals our heart is to evaluate and bring to the light just what it is we really desire. Jesus addressed this issue in Mathew6:21: “For where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.” Because our thoughts and the desires of our hearts are such powerful forces-for good or for bad-let us evaluate our thought life and the desires of our heart and if need be, make any needed adjustments. May each of us experience life as God designed-to the fullest.
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double edge sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
Ephesians 4:31 “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
Colossians 3:15-16, 4:6 “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body and be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”   “Let you speech always be with grace, seasoned as it were, with salt, so that you may know how you should respond to each person.” 
It may be that we need to cease striving to be ‘godly’ or to be more ‘spiritual’ and simply be who we are in Christ. After all, Colossians 2:10 tells us that we are complete in Christ and the scriptures clearly teach that Christ lives in us and we live in Him. This is not to say that we do not need to study the word and grow in the grace and knowledge of God. However, the purpose of our studying God’s word should not be just to gain more knowledge, but to learn of our identity in Him, to gain in our understanding of Him, and to learn of our inheritance in Him.  The word ‘let’ is found throughout the New Testament, indicating that we have within us all that we need to live and to respond in ways that please the Lord as well as bless others. It is liberating to know that we can let our words be words of grace and peace instead of words that belittle or tear down; we can let bitterness and anger be put away form u; we can let the peace of Christ rule in our life; we can let His word dwell within us; and we can let our light shine-it’s that simple. I am positive that every believer agrees with everything I have said thus for; however, there is a proviso-a stipulation. It is our tendency to try to do all of these good things in our own strength and commitment, but we soon learn that our best is not good enough. We can ‘let’ these things be who we are only when we come to a point that we know in our inner most being that God has made us new creations-that we have new hearts and new natures-and because we are new, we can ‘let.’ Let us let the life of who we are in Christ flow out of us. We are not limited to living according to the flesh; we can now walk according to the Spirit, letting Him express the presence of God in us.
Galatians 5:25 “If we live in the Spirit, let also walk in the Spirit.”
Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
2 Peter 1:3 “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.”

Romans 12:10 “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”
Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
1 Peter 3:8 “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.”
1 Thessalonians 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”
If we want to live life to the fullest, if we want to live in peace and harmony, if  want to enjoy life, and if we want to experience God at work in us and those around us, then let us put into practice the instructions of the above verses. There is a warning however; because we may agree with the admonitions of these verses, we may ‘commit’ to do what they say and give it our best shot, but will still fall short of the goal. Rather than seeing these commands as something we must attain too, we must come to a place where we discover that we do these things because that is who we are in Christ. These commands, these activities, flow out of our identity in Christ-they are expressions of our new nature. These commands get to the root of our heart-how we view others and how we treat others-including those closest to us. Some may say “You just don’t understand how difficult the situation is in my family, my family is dysfunctional-these things sound good, but I don’t see it happening in my family.” True-we may be faced with broken or troubled relationships, but the good news is that we can by the Spirit of God in us, make the choice to honor others, be devoted in love, consider others more important than ourselves, and be tender hearted no matter how others may respond. When we live according to our old nature-the flesh-we are selfish and that invariably leads to conflict and strife; the verses above are the antidote to strife and discord and all sorts of evil. Again, unity does not imply that we all think just alike on every issue; the unity that comes from God is much greater-it supersedes our differences. There should be agreement when it comes to teachings of scripture, but even if there is some disagreement on some of the scriptures, we can still have unity-what a blessing! Even though we are all at different stages of our spiritual growth, we can walk in unity, encouraging and honoring one another. In the world there is ample strife and conflict-but we are not of the world. We may need to start some new habits and no longer take each other for granted, but be the one that finds ways to honor others, bless others and encourage others-even when we may not agree with them or we think they are not responding as they should. We can rise above the ways of the world; we can actually walk in the ways of God; we can return good for evil; we can see others as God sees them; and we can be the promoters and the protectors of the unity that is of God. Let us re-read the verses above and resolve to put them into action-today. How bout this---the next person you see after reading this blog-honor them in some way. May God open our hearts and our minds to see all that He has for us.
Colossians 3:13-14 “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

Matthew 5:23-24 “Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.”
Ephesians 4-3 “With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Colossians 3:13 “Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
For believers to be rightly related to one another is a priority in the sight of God and should be a priority for us as well. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are in perfect unity and because we have been joined to God and His Spirit lives in us, we are also to live in unity with the Father and with other believers. Psalm 133:1 declares “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity.” We must be on guard against anything that would disrupt the unity that is ours to enjoy. For certain, we all find ourselves at times having to deal with conflict, misunderstandings, and division; these things come when one lives according to self and not according to who they are in Christ. Sometimes, disagreement and conflict comes just because we think differently on certain issues where neither one is right or wrong-and that can also disrupt the unity. In 1 Corinthians 3:3 we read: “For you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealously and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? And Philippians 2:3 tells us: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” We may not always be able to resolve conflict, but we can respond in a way that is right and we can have the right heart that brings us a sense of peace. When conflict confronts us, we may try to ignore it and just hope it will go away; however, to ignore conflict, hurt feelings, strife, and division is not the answer. From the verses above, we see that we must take the initiative when it comes to maintaining the unity. To be in unity does not mean that we will all think just alike or agree on every detail, but it does mean that we see unity as more important than our personal opinions and we choose to lay aside our preferences and prefer others over ourselves. We are to see other believers as our brothers and sisters in the Lord and we are to love and honor them as the Lord loves us; just as the Lord laid down His life, so must we. Let us be proactive in maintaining the unity that we have in Christ.
1 Corinthians 1:10 “Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and there be no divisions among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgement.
Ephesians 4:1-3 “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, entreat you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

Isaiah 26:3 “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trust in You.”
2 Corinthians 10:5 “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,”
We know the importance and the power of our thought life. Proverbs 23:7 tells us “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” There have been many books written and many sermons preached about the mind being the battleground. I’m sure that all of us at times feel like our mind just goes on its own-thinking on whatever it chooses; and I’m sure we have had those occasions when we ask ourselves, “Where did that thought come from?” It is ever so easy to set certain patterns of thought. It can be a sobering reality to realize that we choose what we think about-where we focus our thoughts. As believers, we have the ability to think in harmony with God because His Spirit lives in us, enabling us to think and to dwell on things that are life-giving, that are godly and righteous. We have been made new and adopted into God’s family and now have access to a new thought life. Now, our minds become subservient to the Spirit of God living and ruling in us; now we can take dominion over out thought life. No matter what we are doing, a menial task or a grand task, we must have the over-ruling belief and view that the center of our life is Christ and it is He that we serve and it is He who directs our life-including our thought life. The truth of the scriptures and His presence in us is to be the foundation of our lives. It is amazing and awesome to be able to think the kind of thoughts that God thinks! We would be wise to filter our thoughts through Philippians 4:8 which says: “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” When our thoughts are in agreement with the ways of God, life takes on a total new meaning with unlimited possibilities. If by chance you don’t believe we can think like God thinks, Paul reminds us that ‘we have the mind of Christ’ in 1 Corinthians 2:16. The good news is that if our thought life has not been the best, we do not need to ‘beat’ ourselves up-just start right now asking God to help you rebuild your thought life and begin to discipline your thought life and take dominion and ownership of what you think about. God is into new beginnings!
