CHRIST  SHINNING  ON  US

June 26, 2014                                                     CHRIST  SHINING  ON  US

What was the passion of Paul and other New Testament writers? Certainly it was a desire for men and women to come to be converted to followers of Christ. The Christian journey starts with being saved-confessing that we are sinners and putting our faith and hope in Jesus as our Saviour. However, there is much more to our salvation than going to heaven as great as that is. As we read in the New Testament, we find that the pages are filled with instructions on how we are to live now that we belong to Him.  In Philippians 1:27 we find Paul telling believers to “conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ..”  There are things that we are not to do as believers, but more importantly, there are many things for us to be about doing. As we focus on who we are, our true identity, we will find that we do not even want to do the things that are unbecoming of believers. The point is that we cannot afford to be passive in living out the gospel. The Christian life we are to live is active. The scriptures are to be our marching orders in deed. Ephesians 5:15-15: “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days or evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” I am convinced that there is a huge mountain we need to remove and that mountain is spiritual inertia. I think this is where the passion of New Testament writers “kicks in”. Paul exhorted believers in Ephesians 5:10: “trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord:” In Colossians 2:2 we find the phrase “attaining to all the wealth”. If we embrace the admonition to live out the gospel in tangible ways day by day, moment by moment, life will never be the same. This sounds first-grade-ish, but when you read the scripture-do what it says! The gospel is our design for life. In Ephesians 5:14 we read: “For this reason it says, Awake sleeper, and arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.” I am sure that you and I both want Christ to shine on us and that He will do if we obey what He says in His Word.

Blessings,

Buddy

Philippians 2:12: “So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling: for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”

MISUNDERSTANDING  GRACE

June 14, 2014                                                                MISUNDERSTANDING  GRACE

Thank God for His great grace and for His accepting us as we are when we respond to His call to salvation. Our righteousness comes from Him being in us. However, if we stop there, we are clearly missing the crux of the gospel and we fail to move on to maturity. God’s grace does not give us the freedom to live according to our own dictates and it does not give us the freedom to stay as we are. For some reason, the idea of keeping “commandments” may have negative connotations to some. Let it be clear that we don’t keep commandments to earn His love but we do so because we love Him. John 14:23: “Jesus answered and said to him, If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make our abode with him.” When we digest this verse, we see just how awesome it is-it may even sound radical.  The key part of this verse is the relation between “loving” and “keeping.” The hard cold fact is that if we are not keeping His word, we are not loving Him. The New Testament is absolutely full of instructions and commandments and we find over and over the admonition to keep His word. This relationship of “loving” and “keeping” is a theme found throughout scripture. The commandments of the Lord actually reveal our new nature and because of that, His commandments are not burdensome when we are living according to our new nature. On the positive side of the verse above, we find a tremendous promise and that is as we love Him and keep His word, the Father loves us AND Jesus and the Father abodes with us! I might add that when we find ourselves discouraged or simply coasting in life or feel disconnected from God, if we will simply choose to carry out one of the commands or instructions that God gives in His Word as an act of obedience, we will began to experience His life flowing in us once again. A good place to start is with some of the “one another” commands we find in the New Testament. For example, make a call or write a note to someone that will encourage them; express kindness, find a way to serve someone, give something that will bless the recipient.                                   It’s important to choose not to live according to what I will call “unredeemed feeling”.  Living according to feeling is contrary to scripture. We are to live being led by the Holy Spirit who always leads according to God’s plans. I might add that it does “feel” good to live according to how God designed. The above verse is a challenge for us to examine our love for Jesus and the Father. Real love leads to a joyful keeping of the commandments of our Father and by keeping His commandments we discover life to the fullest. When we read the scriptures, may we do so in light of examining our lives to see if we are indeed keeping His word. God’s heart and Jesus’s desire is to abode with us and that is what they do when we love and therefore obey!

Psalm 100:2: “Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.”  Verse 5: “For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”

THERE  IS  A  WAY

June 16, 2014                                                          THERE  IS  A  WAY

I was reading in Acts 18:24-28 where we are introduced to a man named Apollos. “Now a certain Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by birth, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus; and he was mighty in the scriptures.”  In verse 28 we read: “for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating by the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.” (Read verses 24-28 for more details on Apollos.).  We find in Acts 19:23:  “And about that time there arose no small disturbance concerning the Way.” In that day the Christians were referred to as “the Way”. These verses in Acts 18 and Acts 19 are not directly related, nonetheless, they do reveal a certain truth that I think should impact our lives in a positive way. These verses point out that there is A Way. We can hold in our hand a single book (the Bible) that is THE truth. This truth is ours to study, digest and proclaim. Why would we not want to become “mighty in the scriptures”?  Becoming “mighty in the scriptures” is not reserved for the preachers/pastors and teachers but is a call to all believers everywhere. The above scriptures tell us that Apollos had been “instructed in the way of the Lord.” What are some of the benefits in being “mighty in the scriptures”? For sure we come to know God in a more personal way; we find joy, peace, hope, confidence and strength. We are able to bless and encourage others. We learn about, discover our new nature. The list of benefits could almost be endless, but you get the point. I fear that we have not been aggressive in becoming “mighty in the scriptures” but have become somewhat lazy in searching out the scriptures and perhaps left the study of the scriptures to the teachers. I realize that some seem more able to digest the scriptures and some have a gift of teaching but we can all become “mighty in the scriptures” in our individual lives, where we live. The point is that we can be and should be increasing our understanding of the scriptures. I am not talking about knowledge for the sake of knowledge but talking about discovering the truth of the Gospel that changes lives. What greater study, what greater challenge, what greater reward can compare to the benefits derived from becoming “mighty in the scriptures”? We don’t know a lot about Apollos and he just appears out of nowhere it seems, but God saw fit to include him in the Bible and I think He did so to encourage us to become “mighty in the scriptures”. Whatever level we are currently at in our Christian life, let us answer the call to be be-coming “mighty in the scriptures”.

2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”

Acts 17:11 “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether these things were so.

GIVE  ME  THIS  MOUNTAIN

June 7, 2014                                                         GIVE  ME  THIS  MOUNTAIN

It helps to understand that basically the Old Testament foreshadows the New Testament. We find in the Old Testament how God dealt with His people in a natural or physical way so to speak and what God did in the natural or physical in the Old Testament is a picture of the spiritual implications in the New Testament. (This is not to say that God does not work in the natural today.) For example, we don’t face physical giants, but we do face other types of giants we must defeat. Another example of this is found in the account of Caleb.  If you are familiar with the Old Testament, you no doubt know the story of Joshua and Caleb and how they were the only two spies who wanted the children of Israel to enter the promise land and take possession of the land that God had promised them-a land flowing with milk and honey. The obvious difference between these two spies and the other ten was their faith in their God-they simply believed what He said. Caleb said that he was strong in his old age like he was in his younger years. Caleb stands as a good example for our culture. Even in old age, we can have vision and energy as a result of having faith in God. Our faith needs to be nurtured and exercised if it is to be a faith that energizes. Caleb had seen God work in marvelous ways; we to need to remember what God has done. Just as in the case of Caleb, God has mountains for us to conquer. There is one catch to Caleb’s success, and that is that “he followed the Lord God of Israel fully”-Joshua 14:14. Most of us have our share of mountains to conquer and our share of giants to defeat. There are two basic facts about Caleb’s life that needs to be true in our lives as well. Caleb had a heart to know and to follow God no matter how big the giants were and he had a living, active faith in God. The last picture we see of Caleb is him at age 85 claiming his mountain, a mountain where giants lived with fortified cities. Caleb did take the mountain and he did defeat the giants and he lived in the land. No matter your age, like Caleb, conquer the mountain facing you and defeat the giants and enter the land God has for you. The milk and honey you find will be better than what the bees and cows produce!

Joshua 14:11-14: “ “I am still as strong today as I was in the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so my strength is now, for war and for going out and coming in. Now then, give me this hill country about which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day that Anakim were there, with great fortified cities; perhaps the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out as the Lord has spoken.” So Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. Therefore, Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite until this day, because he followed the   Lord God of Israel fully”.

KINDLE  AND  GUARD

June 4, 2014                                                        KINDLE  AND  GUARD

In 2 Timothy Paul is giving Timothy instructions on how to conduct his ministry. In chapter 1:6-7,14 we read “And for this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. Guard through the Holy Spirit who dells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you. There are times when we may find ourselves spiritually coasting, not so in-tune to the things of God. We may forget that God has a purpose for us each day and being luke warm is not His purpose. So, we too need to be reminded  at times to “rekindle afresh” what God has put is us. Every child of God has been gifted in some way in order to carry out His purpose. Timothy may have been somewhat timid, or hesitant, but timidity is not from God. God has given us power and love and discipline. We must remember that we have love, power and discipline for living. Do not let our “personality” limit us or cause us not to live in power, love and discipline.  According to verse 14, we must “guard” the treasure that has been entrusted to us. We need to be in tune with and sensitive to the Holy Spirit who dwells in us because He is always leading and equipping us according to God’s plans for us. Perhaps even today it is time to “kindle afresh” and “guard the treasure”.

Buddy

You've  Been  Known  A  Long  Time

June 1, 2014                     YOU’VE  BEEN  KNOWN  A  LONG  TIME

Our infinite mind is limited but faith is not limited. Our subject for today cannot be totally grasped with the mind so we have to receive what is said with faith in what the scriptures teach. Our Father is unlimited and is all powerful but He gives us faith to believe even what we do not fully understand.                                                        The scriptures teach that God knew us before the foundation of the earth! Ephesians 1:4 “..just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him….”  That fact alone boggles the mind! Also, it is an awesome thought to realize that we come from God as we read in 1 John 4:4: “You are from God little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”  We need to know that we were in God’s heart long before we were born physically. At the right time, God formed us in our mother’s womb; He knew every detail about us. “For Thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst weave me in my mother’s womb.” Psalms 139:13. (Read all of Psalm 139 and be blessed.)  God said that we “were fearfully and wonderfully made”.  The key for us is whether or not we believe this wonderful truth. Even though you may have been a “surprise” to your parents or perhaps you did not have a functional family, you were no “accident” and you were not a “surprise” to your real Father God.  That is great news, but the best is yet to come. God knew that sin would enter the world and He knew that all would sin. BUT God had a plan all along to deal with the sin issue. Man’s fall was no surprise to God. God sent His only Son Jesus to bear our sin. Here is the truth that can change your life: Jesus came to redeem His brothers and sisters who were in the Fathers heart from the beginning!  Jesus came to buy us back-to restore us to our real family!  We have been restored and we are being restored-the process has started. When we come to understand and believe this, the scriptures truly make sense! In essence, the scriptures were given to reveal our real Father and to awaken us to our true identity- that of being sons and daughters of the Creator God. This is such a wonderful truth and it sets us on a lifetime journey of discovering the riches of being joined to God. Now when we read the scriptures we find life. Now we more fully understand why the New Testament writers had the passion they did as they pinned the words inspired by God. The Gospel is indeed the Gospel! I pray that we will awaken to the fact that we were “fathered” by God, we have is DNA, and that we have a destiny that has already started! Share this good news.

“..I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God..”  John 20:17b.

“And looking out on those who were sitting around Him, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother.” Mark 3:34-35.

Redeem: to buy back; to repurchase

Gospel: good news; something realized as true.

Blessings,

Buddy
