In 2 Timothy Paul is giving Timothy instructions on how to conduct his ministry. In chapter 1:6-7,14 we read “And for this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. Guard through the Holy Spirit who dells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you. There are times when we may find ourselves spiritually coasting, not so in-tune to the things of God. We may forget that God has a purpose for us each day and being luke warm is not His purpose. So, we too need to be reminded at times to “rekindle afresh” what God has put is us. Every child of God has been gifted in some way in order to carry out His purpose. Timothy may have been somewhat timid, or hesitant, but timidity is not from God. God has given us power and love and discipline. We must remember that we have love, power and discipline for living. Do not let our “personality” limit us or cause us not to live in power, love and discipline. According to verse 14, we must “guard” the treasure that has been entrusted to us. We need to be in tune with and sensitive to the Holy Spirit who dwells in us because He is always leading and equipping us according to God’s plans for us. Perhaps even today it is time to “kindle afresh” and “guard the treasure”.
