KEEPING  IT  SIMPLE

April 27, 2017                                       KEEPING  IT  SIMPLE
1 Timothy 1:5 “But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
With the world at our finger tips, with the immense amount of information available to us, we may find ourselves overwhelmed or even confused as to what really matters and we may wonder what effect our life has on the grand scheme of things. One other potential downside of having seemingly unending information available 24/7 is that we can become callus and get to a place where we are ‘un-impressionable’ with what we do hear or read. With that observation, let us move on to the good news. One amazing thing about God’s word is that it keeps us focused on what is true and accurate, keeps our thinking clear, and is easily understood-it is beautifully simplistic. Even believers may lose sight of the core message of the gospel. From the verse above, one obvious point is that we need the ‘instruction’ of the word; having a heart to know God and a heart to obey His word is essential if we are to be spiritually healthy. One of the primary works of God in us is to purify our hearts-actually He gives us a new heart-that is the ultimate purifying work He does. God does give us a new heart, but we are called to keep our hearts pure, as we are instructed in 2 Corinthians 7:1:“Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” Only as we learn of God and experience Him personally, can we love others from a pure heart. Human love fails and is incomplete, but the love of God that flows from a pure heart never fails. When we live out of our new heart, a heart that is pure, we will do what is right in the sight of God, and as a result, we will have a good conscience. When we are instructed by the word of God, we will gain a ‘sincere’ faith; a faith that comes from knowing that God is who He says He is. As we are instructed by the word of God, we will experience the love of God personally, our hearts will be purified, our conscience will no longer condemn us but will be good, and our faith will not be in word only, but will be sincere. The simple message for us, the application of this scripture, is that we make the decision to place ourselves under the instruction of God’s word. To be instructed by the word of God means that we must read, study, and meditate on the scriptures, AND do what we read. There is no substitute to this process; and most importantly, listening to a minister’s sermon thirty minutes each week is not a valid substitute. Is it your heart, is it my heart to be instructed by the word, and to be adjusted by the word of God? Being instructed by His word and obeying the word is the key to life.
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

THE  HIDDEN  WISDOM

4/24/2019

April 24, 2019                                        THE  HIDDEN  WISDOM
1 Corinthians 2:4-8 “And my message and my teaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God. Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age, nor of the rulers who are passing away, but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom, which God predestined before the ages to our glory, the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory;”
We have a tendency to rely on, to promote, and to follow the wisdom of man. Even in Christian circles and even from some pulpits, from ‘Christian’ books and cd’s, and from various web sites, it is the wisdom of man that we often hear. Yet, Paul is saying that our faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God. There is wisdom, but it is not of this world, and interestingly, it is a ‘hidden’ wisdom. Obviously, because it is hidden, many will not find it or recognize it. The wisdom that is from God is ‘hidden’ in Christ; only those who know Him as Lord and Savior can avail themselves to the wisdom that comes from God. Wisdom is not something we learn, it is a gift from God. James 1:5 tells us: “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let them ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” This is not to say that we do not grow in wisdom and that we do not gain wisdom from experience. As our knowledge of God increases, more of His wisdom is unfolded, and as we walk in His way, through our experiences, we see the wisdom of God at work. We must realize that there are only two choices when it comes to wisdom; we either live according to the wisdom of man, or according to the wisdom of God, and we also must realize that as a believer, we have the same two choices. The wisdom of God that is available to us, is found in the word of God as the Holy Spirit helps us understand the scriptures. If we have no desire to read His word, or if we are not having a steady diet of His word, we can be sure we are lacking His wisdom. Gaining wisdom is a process; we acquire wisdom as we read His word and as we continue obeying His teachings and His commands. As we obey and as we keep His word, He reveals more to us. (Logic is a gift of God, but logic is not wisdom. There are times when God directs us to do something that may not sound logical.) Let our faith rest on the power of God, and not on the wisdom of men. The good news is that God offers His wisdom to all who ask Him; no matter how much education we have or do not have, no matter what our IQ might be, and no matter of our social status, we can be men and woman who have the wisdom of God.
Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
1 Corinthians 1:25 “For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.”

HE  IS  NOT  HERE - HE  HAS  RISEN

APRIL 21, 2019                           HE  IS  NOT  HERE -  HE  HAS  RISEN
Mark 16:5-7 “And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, ‘Do not be amazed, you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him. But go tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He said to Matthew 28:6 “He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.”                                                                                                                                                                                                     Mark 16:9 “Now after He had risen early on that first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons.”                                                                                   Luke 24:5b-6b “Why are you looking for the living among the dead? He is not here; He has risen!           Acts 4:33 “With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.”         1 Peter 1:3 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
If Jesus was not raised from the dead, then the bible and the Christian message is all a hoax. If Jesus was raised from the dead, then the bible-the word of God-and the message of the gospel is the greatest news of all eternity. Everything hinges on the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. All of mankind-the naysayers, the unbelieving, the doubters, the atheist and the agnostic-all have to make a decision regarding the resurrection of Jesus; either accept it as true or deny it happened. If one believes that God raised Jesus from the dead, everything changes. (We cannot begin to fathom the power of God that brings a dead body back to life.) The resurrection of Jesus is living proof of the God we read about in the scriptures. And here is the utterly fantastic news, the reality of how the resurrection of Jesus impacts all who know Him as savior-“The Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Jesus from the dead, He will give life to your mortal bodies by the same Spirit living within you.” Romans 6:10-11. Even though most people have heard about the resurrection of Jesus many times and are familiar with the biblical account of His resurrection, let us once again marvel at the awesome event that occurred early one morning on the first day of the week over 2000 years ago, when God spoke the word and the dead body of Jesus came back to life-He arose, folded up the burial cloth, and left the tomb! Can you imagine what was going on in the hearts of His followers who had witnessed His horrible crucifixion, when they began to hear the news of His resurrection? ‘Could it be true?’ they must have wondered. The resurrection of Jesus was not just for the benefit of His disciples of that day, but for all of those who would come to know Him as Savior-that includes you and I. The resurrection of Jesus conquered death; assured the forgiveness of sins; meant that believers would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit; that we would be raised to new life in Him; that He would be our intercessor before God in heaven; and that we have a destiny in Him, starting now. Perhaps the most important thing we can do in light of His resurrection, is to walk in newness of life.
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

FIGHT  THE  GOOD  FIGHT

4/18/2019

April 18, 2019                                      FIGHT  THE  GOOD  FIGHT
1 Timothy 6:11-12, 18-19 “But flee from these things, you man of God; and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”     “Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.”
We are called to be fighters! If we are to overcome the ways of the world, we must fight. The fight we are to be engaged in involves both fleeing and pursuing. The starting point, or the realization that we need to fight, is that we see that there is evil present in the world and we also see that God is at work in the world, redeeming and transforming man. If we fail to see these two realities, we are in denial and we have no reason or motivation to fight. The world system that rejects the ways of God, is under the influence of Satan. For example, the world system promotes such things as the idea that we need to take care of number one-ourselves; the goal is personal happiness; the end justifies the means; to get all we can; money and influence are the important things and are the measure of success; material possessions make us happy; and if it makes you happy-do it. The list could go on, but you get the idea. So, to begin with, let us purpose to flee from the ways of this world system. We are to pursue the things of God’s kingdom. Such things as being rich in good works; being generous; love; faithfulness; forgiving; truthfulness; honoring others; encouraging others; and again, the list could go on. We are to pursue living in such a way that our life is in agreement with the gospel, obeying the words and teachings of Jesus. However, in our own strength, we can neither flee nor fight the good fight of faith. As followers of Jesus, and because we are members of God’s kingdom, we are to live with an eternal view, not a temporal view focused primarily on the here and now. If we are wise, we will be making investments in things that matter for all eternity. Investing in the eternal things is spiritual in nature, but it also has a practical aspect to it. Something as simple as giving a drink of water in the name of Jesus to someone who is thirsty is investing in the eternal. As believers, we have been lifted out of living according to the natural and are now able to live a ‘super-natural’ life with eternal consequences because the Spirit of God lives in us. Scripture admonishes us to put on the new man-who we are in Christ, and to walk in the ways of God. So, let us fight the good fight of faith; as we do, we will be taking hold of eternal life-life that has already begun, right here in the ‘nitty-gritty,’ day to day life.
Philippians 1:27 “Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come to see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.”

STEADFAST,  IMMOVABLE,  ALWAYS  ABOUNDING

4/15/2019

April 15, 2019                           STEADFAST, IMMOVABLE, ALWAYS ABOUNDING
1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, My beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.”
In the verses preceding this verse above, Paul in considerable detail is describing what it will be like when at that great and awesome moment, believers will be changed from mortal to immortal at the coming of Jesus. At that instant we will ‘bear the image of the heavenly’! 1 Corinthians 15:49-54. Because of these fantastic events that are yet to come, Paul concludes this section of scripture by encouraging believers to continue to live in such a way that they will be ready when that day suddenly comes. Believers experience trials and difficulties in this life and there may be times when they are tempted to give up on being faithful in the work of the Lord, but God reminds us that our labor in the Lord is not in vain-even though we may at times be tempted to think that it is. We must avoid the trap of becoming disappointed and losing our passion for the Lord because things did not happen as we thought they would or because things are more difficult than we expected. Contrary to what we like to hear, sometimes there is ‘toil’ in the work of the Lord-it’s not always easy or immediately fulfilling. Yet, when we are about the Lord’s work, there are rewards in the here and now and rewards reserved for us when we meet the Lord. Human resolve fails at some point, but the presence of the Holy Spirit empowers the believer to remain steadfast and immovable when it comes to continuing in the work of the Lord. Not only can the believer continue in the work of the Lord, he or she can abound in that work because they understand that their toil in not in vain. The believer who, from his heart, is about the Lord’s work does not require the approval or praise of man because he is doing what he does as unto the Lord and not unto man. There is something much more difficult, more dangerous and carries a high price tag for the believer than ‘toiling’ in the work of the Lord, and that is not to be about the Lord’s work. It is a simple matter of the heart: if the heart is turned to the Lord and from the heart one wants to know God, he or she will find themselves about the Lord’s work. There is no greater joy than the joy that comes from doing what the Lord calls us to be about.
1 Corinthians 15:51-53 “Behold, I tell you a mystery, we shall not all sleep, but we shall be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.”

PART  OF  THE  FAMILY

4/12/2019

April 12, 2019                                           PART  OF  THE  FAMILY
John 15:15b “I have called you friends, for everything I learned from My Father I have made known to you.”
Hebrews 2:11 “For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren.”
Ephesians 1:5 “He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will.
2 Corinthians 6:18 “And, ‘I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, say the Lord Almighty.’”
Because our view of God largely affects how we live our life, it is critically important that our view and our understanding of God be in agreement with who God says He is in His word. Many see God as a distant God that is looking down over His creation-and in one sense that is correct. However, if that is our only view of God, we have missed the most important message found in the scriptures. We cannot fully comprehend it, but God, the creator, the Almighty, has chosen to be personal with those who have trusted Him as Savior. It is obvious from scripture that God desires a family and that He enjoys having fellowship with those who have come to know Him as Father. God took the initiative in reconciling man to Himself in order that fellowship between God and man could be restored. We may sometime lose sight of the fact that God IS love and all He does in the life of the believer is based on love. Even when He disciplines us, it is because He loves us. It is awesome to know that He has actually poured out His love into our hearts! Romans 5:5. Our relationship with God takes us beyond the natural and places us in the realm of the super-natural. Ephesians 2:6 tells us that “God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus. (That’s a subject for another blog.) Now, we have a loving Father whose love will never fail us, who is continually drawing us to Himself and transforming us into His image. If we truly know God, we want to do the things that please Him, but our relationship is not based on our performance-it is based on God’s love for us and our love for Him. If you have a mental agreement that God loves you but have not experienced His love in a personal way, ask God to begin to reveal to you His love for you and continue to seek Him-He will in His own way, reveal how much He loves you.
John 1:12 “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name”

April 9, 2019                                             WORTHY  OF  YOUR  CALLING
2 Thessalonians 1:10-12 “when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed-for our testimony to you was believed. To this end we also pray for you always that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power; in order that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
The verses preceding these verses make it clear that Jesus will one day come with ‘His mighty angels in flaming fire’ and will ‘deal out retribution to those who do not know God and who do not obey the gospel’.  (Some will find those verses not politically correct.)  As believers, we must be aware of the sobering possibility of not being found worthy of our calling when He returns. There is a type of fear that is not of God and that is unhealthy, but there is a fear that is healthy, a fear that helps keep our focus on God’s calling and plans for us. Dennis Peacock says that we should always be motivated by the love of God, but the right kind of fear is a safety net for us that keeps us from veering off the path that God has for us. God has marvelous plans for those who believe and for those who obey His gospel. Jesus is coming back, but He will not be riding on a donkey as He was when He was about to lay His life down. He will be coming-“on that day”- with mighty angels and will be ‘marveled at’ by all who believe. That day will be like no other day in history-can you imagine? That day, when Jesus returns, will be what God has been moving toward through-out human history. On that day, Jesus will be glorified in His saints and His saints glorified in Him! The absolute greatest desire in all of life that we should have is to be found worthy when He comes again-on that day. Being found worthy is not gained by our own strength, but we will be found worthy by being about the things of God. Being found worthy is a daily thing. If we have ‘desires for goodness’ and we have faith that is at work, God will bring it to pass-in order that He may be glorified through the life we live-our actions. When we meditate on this truth, it seems so foolish and such a waste of time to fret over the insignificant, to be distracted by and invest so much in what is not really important-‘to major on the minors.’ As believers, let us be keenly aware of the fact that He is coming back just as He said He would, and He will be coming back in power like we have never witnessed before. It’s our place to begin now to make sure we are ready for that day and that we will be found worthy. Let us lay aside anything that does not please the Lord.
Acts 1:11 “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing into heaven? This same Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, will return in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”
1 John 2:28 “And now, dear children, continue in Him, so that when He appears we may be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming.”

THAT  HE  MAY  STRONGLY  SUPPORT

4/6/2019

April 6, 2019                                  THAT  HE  MAY  STRONGLY  SUPPORT
2 Chronicles 16:9b “For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose hearts is completely His.”
John 14:23 “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will keep my words; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.’”
Can we embrace the fact that God is good; that He wants to ‘support’ us; that He is looking for those whose hearts is completely His; and that He wants to make His abode in us? Do we believe, are we convinced that God is about having a relationship with His creation, about family? God is a compassionate God, desiring good for those who belong to Him and who have a heart to know Him. There is a tendency for us to think of God as a disciplinarian or One who is watching us to see if we do wrong. Some believe that they must walk the ‘straight and narrow’ if they are to avoid the wrath of God. Our view of God is critical. It is true that God does judge sin and there are things we can do as believers that displease Him. However, the very essence, the very nature of God is that He is good and full of compassion, desiring that all men be saved and come to know Him as a loving Father. Most of the heartaches, the troubles of man, the brokenness, and strife that is prevalent in the world is a result of man rejecting God-not the results of an angry God venting His displeasure. The promises of God are unlimited for those whose hearts are completely His, for those who seek Him with all of their hearts. 2 Chronicles 15:1-7 tells us that God will let those who seek Him find Him. God wants us to find Him. After all said and done, no matter of your past, no matter what your present circumstances are, the all-important thing is what your heart is seeking. You can read a thousand books, listen to a thousand sermons, but if it’s not your heart to know God, then all is in vain. (Perhaps the reading and listening to sermons may impact your heart to the point that you seek Him.) I think that when we better understand the nature of God, that He is for us, that He loves us, and that He desires for us to live abundant life, it becomes only natural for us to want to know Him-to seek Him. As said many times before, God revealing   Himself to man is the reason He inspired the written word, the Bible. As we read and study the Word of God, we learn of Him and His purposes for man, and we discover our true identity as new creations. Again, when it is our heart to know Him, He lets us find Him and He “strongly supports” us, and He and the Son make us His abode! Obeying Him and keeping His words become the natural response and our joy, when we come to know Him. The only way to know Him is to seek Him first.
Psalm 86:15 “But you, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.”
Romans 8:31 “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

BE  ON  GUARD

4/3/2019

April 3, 2019                                           BE  ON  GUARD
2 Peter 3:17-18 “You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on guard lest, being carried away by the error of unprincipled men, you fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
1 Corinthians 16:13 “Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.”
In chapter three of 2 Peter, Peter is encouraging the believers to remember the words of the prophets and the words of Jesus and to be reminded that the plans and purposes of God will be carried out to completion. The reason for being on guard is that there will be those who mock God, who will say He is not coming back, implying that it is useless to live according to the words of God. This admonition to be on guard is certainly a relevant word in the culture in which we live as it is a culture that openly mocks and rejects the words and the council of God and promotes a humanistic view of life. Not only are we to be on guard against those who promote the idea of rejecting God, or that God does not exist, we are also to be on guard for anything that would draw our hearts away from the Lord. Perhaps one of the biggest distractions that we must be on guard against lies within us, and Proverbs 4:23 reveals what it is. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” The obvious question is how do we guard our hearts? As Proverbs tells us, the things we do and the thoughts we have originate in the heart, so keeping the heart pure is critical to our spiritual health. To be on guard over our heart means that we filter out those things that are impure, and allowing only what is right, what is true, and what is pure according to God’s standards to enter our hearts. We do not have to live in fear of evil entering our hearts, we just have to monitor on what we let in. God has given us new hearts, and we must make the choice to live out of this new heart. As believers who have been given new hearts, we are to be stewards over what God has entrusted to us. The blessing is that when we live out of our new heart, we will be drawn to what is pure, and we will find that the thoughts that flow out of our new hearts are pure. The most foundational way of keeping our hearts pure and living according to the ways of God is to consistently read and study the scriptures, because it is there that we find truth. If we neglect the reading and studying of His word, it is a fact that we will drift from the truth.  Practically, to guard our hearts means that we must say ‘no’ to somethings and ‘yes’ to other things. As an example, we must monitor what we watch on television, or on our IPhone; if it is contrary to the ways of God, if it R-rated, etc., refuse to look at it. Take dominion on what you allow to come through the eye-gate and the ear-gate. When a wrong thought does come in, reject it immediately. Focus and set your heart on being obedient to all of the ‘one-another’ scriptures-love one another, encourage one another, speak words that build up, prefer one another over yourself, forgive one another, and etc. You and I can, and we must, take dominion, be diligent, and be on guard over our hearts and not be compromised by a culture that rejects God. Also, we are reminded in these verses to “grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
Blessings,
Buddy
