DEAD  BUT  ALIVE

February 26, 2019                                   DEAD  BUT  ALIVE
Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me.”
Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”
It’s another mystery of God, but we can find real, abundant life only after we have died. This death is not a physical death, but is a death to what the bible often refers to as the flesh. The flesh is that part of man that insist on living according to his or her own way. Man, apart from God, is convinced that he knows what is best for him and thus he pursues life according to his own dictates. As Proverbs tells us, there is a way that seems right to man, but its end is the way of death. Because man believes that he is the one who ‘is in charge’ of his life, he rejects the idea of a God who is ruling and reigning, and a God to whom he is accountable too. The flesh has many faces; it can express itself in the most hideous form of evil, or it can actually on the surface look good-but in either case or anywhere between, it is still the flesh that insist on its own way, independent of God. In Galatians, Paul is correcting the erroneous teaching of those who say that only by keeping the law can one be justified before God. Even though those who profess to know God, are still living according to the flesh if they believe that it is by their works that they are justified. A basic, foundational truth of the gospel is that Christ fulfilled the law and He died in our place, making us ‘justified’ before God. The truth and the blessings of the New Covenant hinge on the believer dying to himself and living as unto the Lord. In essence, dying to myself is saying to God that I choose to live according to His ways, not mine-in other words, I see myself, the flesh, as having been crucified with Christ. Just as Paul testified, we too have been raised with Him and He now lives in us. Here is the good news; the best thing we could ever do is to die to ourselves; trading our life for His is a no-brainer. We still live in the flesh, but we are no longer dominated by the flesh; the life we live now is the life of Christ in us. Now our flesh is under the rule of Christ. Dying to self is not a one-time occurrence but is an on-going process; Romans 8:12-13 tells us that we are to be ‘putting to death the deeds of the body.’ When we walk according to the Spirit, we will not carry out the deeds of the flesh. If we want to really live life to the fullest, let us by faith declare that our old self, our flesh, was indeed crucified with Christ and that now we live according to the life of Christ in us.
Galatians 5:24 “Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”                                                                                                                                                           Ephesians 4:24 “and put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”

WHAT'S  YOUR  DISPOSITION ?

February 23, 2019                                 WHAT’S  YOUR  DISPOSITION ?
Proverbs 15:15 “All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.”
Proverbs 4:20-22 “My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your sight; keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those that find them, and health to all their body.”
In the natural, there are many things that would rob us of a cheerful heart; there is strife and trouble on every hand. The troubles we face in the day in which we live does not catch God by surprise and they do no over-ride the joy and peace that comes from God. However, many, including believers, have allowed the trials they face and the world of strife and conflict to become oppressive. And as the verse above tells us, ‘all the days of the oppressed are wretched.’ The important question is how do we have a cheerful heart when we are surrounded by discord? First, let us understand that having a cheerful heart does not mean that we are oblivious to the trials, nor does not mean that we are unaffected by the trials. A cheerful heart is not a reality when our focus is on what’s taking place around us; a cheerful heart is rooted in faith in God. One who sees beyond the immediate and believes that every word of God will come to pass enjoys a cheerful heart. As in the verse above, it is critical that we pay attention and take to heart what God has said because in His words there is life. The words of God dispel darkness, gives us hope, makes us new, cleanses us, gives us a new identity, and gives us confidence that God is at work even in a dark world. Even in the darkest hour we face, when we don’t understand why, we can have an underlying assurance that God has not forsaken us and that He will give us strength to endure and will use the trial for good. It is amazing, but theses verses tells us that a cheerful heart and taking to heart the words of God has a positive impact on our physical and emotional health! I don’t know about you, but in my goings about, I don’t encounter too many that have a cheerful heart. But you and I can. If you want to bless others and encourage others, then live with a cheerful heart. There will likely be times when our heart is not cheerful and it may be that our heart is seldom cheerful, but when that is the case, let us take a spiritual inventory and examine what we are believing in our hearts. As we align our hearts with the words of God and as we establish our hearts in faith in our loving heavenly Father, a spirit of cheerfulness will fill our heart, freeing us of any and all oppression. God loves us, is for us, and He is more than sufficient for whatever we face in this life.

THE  MIND  OF  CHRIST

February 20, 2019                                   THE  MIND  OF  CHRIST
1 Corinthians 2:16 “For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he would instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.”
Philippians 2:5 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”
The battle for our mind is a battle we must win if we are to experience life as God designed. We would all agree that how we think, or what we think, is all important. Proverbs 23:7 says it well: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” If we are to win the battle for our minds, we must first acknowledge that we are responsible for our thoughts-we choose what to think about. Even the person who does not acknowledge God will have a ‘better’ life if he or she has a healthy mindset. However, those who have been born again-have trusted Christ as Savior-have available to them something that no one else has access too. It may sound like a ‘stretch,’ or even an impossibility for some, but that truth is that we can have the same mindset that Jesus had-same mind that was in Christ! This is a miracle. God has made us new creations, and a part of being made new is that our thought life takes on a whole new dynamic; we can now think in a different manner, according to the ways of God. This is all possible because the Spirit of God lives in us, enabling us to live as new creations, or as someone has said, a new species of man. Having the mind of Christ has practical implications. As an example, if one who is living according to the natural mind perceives that someone has done him wrong, he simply retaliates to get even. On the contrary, when one who has the mind of Christ, instead of retaliating, he forgives and is not offended by the one who wronged him. Responding with the mind of Christ is something that is rarely seen in this day. How about you and I? Because we engage with others, whether it be family, fellow employees, or neighbors, there are opportunities for us to demonstrate the mind of Christ in the way we respond to potential conflict. By operating according to the mind of Christ, we can actually live free of being offended by the action of others and we can bring peace to a potential volatile situation. Also, living with the mind of Christ is freedom; free from the thoughts and responses that lead to strife, conflict, and free to bless and build up others-even when they are wrong-that’s real freedom. I have no proof of this, but I believe that having the mind of Christ has a positive impact on our physical and emotional health. May we understand that because we are indeed new creatures, we can live day by day with the mind of Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:5 “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

BEING  TRANSFORMED

2/16/2019

February 16, 2019                                      BEING  TRANSFORMED
2 Corinthians 3:16-18 “but whenever a man turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.”
All mankind has a veil over his heart and his eyes, is blinded, and not able to see and to know God through his own effort and understanding. God has designed it in such a way that the only way to know Him is through His Son Jesus; Jesus’s death on the cross was the sacrifice for our sins and His resurrection from the dead opened the door for us to be reconciled to God. Only when one ‘turns to the Lord’ is the veil taken away, making it possible for them to come to a true knowledge of God. This truth explains why it is that those who have not turned to the Lord do not understand the ways of God and even resist Him and those who know Him. The main point of this writing today is to better understand the process of transformation for those who have turned to the Lord. Those who have trusted Christ as Savior have been transformed, but are also still being transformed. Even though we are to be learning of Him through study and are to be maturing in Christ, this ongoing transformation process does not take place by our own effort and determination. The miracle is that as we ‘behold’ Him, as we are seeing Him for who He is, as we meditate on Him and His greatness and His love, we are transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. In the transformation process, we discover that we have been made new, and we begin to live as a new creations. As new creations, we no longer have the mindset that says we must obey God in order to gain His approval; now our life-our thoughts, our motives, and our actions-become a natural reflection of the life of Christ in us. God, through the Holy Spirit, has taken up residence in us; the old things-including the old us-has passed away and new things have come. Transformation is God’s plan for us, however, we must be aware of the fact that it is possible for us to resist or not yield to this transformation process. Also, as stated above, it is also possible for us to mistakenly think that the transformation process is up to us. Let us make sure that we have turned to the Lord, that we are beholding His glory, and that it is our heart to know Him-as we do, we will be being transformed into His very image! Wow!
Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-His good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Blessings.

ONCE  FOR  ALL  DELIVERED

2/13/2019

February 13, 2019                                    ONCE  FOR ALL  DELIVERED
Jude 1:3: “Beloved, while I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.”
There is a tendency for us to seek, or strive for something we think we lack, yet, we already have what we are seeking. We may think that if we put forth more effort, if we read and memorize more scripture, if-if-if, we will be better Christians. As believers, we have been given a package deal; a package that is complete with everything we need to live life just as God intended. The gospel is a done deal! It has been delivered! Our part is to discover the wonderful truths that are contained in the gospel-the gospel that “was once delivered to the saints.” Receiving the gospel may be compared to receiving a large gift box, and as we unwrap it and open it up, we find more gifts inside; like so, in the gospel that we have received, there are truths to be ‘unwrapped’ – the gospel is in our possession. Rather than striving to find or be something that we think we lack, we should be about discovering and celebrating our new identity in Christ. Realizing experientially that we have been made new, and not merely refurbished, seems to be a major hurdle for many professing believers. We can and should now live out of our newness-not who we use to be. I am reminded of the story of the Japanese soldiers, held out high in the mountains that remained in a war mode for a long time, even though the war was over-they did not get the word that the war was over. Today, there are believers who are still fighting the ‘self-effort’ war; they have not gotten the word that the war is over, and that the ‘old man’, our old self, has been defeated. Let us not misunderstand, as in the verse above, we must “contend earnestly for the faith which was once for delivered to the saints.” We must guard against any teaching or thinking that diminishes the truth of the gospel; we have to be aware of the fact that human nature is such that it wants to put responsibility for change on man, rather than simply receiving the truth that it is God who changes us from the inside out. As believers, we are not destined to spend a lifetime searching for ‘the abundant life’ that Jesus promised, but are to receive, or enter into all that comes as a result of being a member of God’s family. The fact that we have received the gospel and can now experience life to the fullest, does not mean that we will not face trials; however, the gospel brings with it the power and the strength to be overcomers in the trials and God causes the trials to work for our good.
Psalms 16:11: “You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”
Colossians 2:10: “And ye are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.”

WHY  SO  DOWNCAST  ?

2/10/2019

February 10, 2019                                                 WHY  SO  DOWNCAST?
Psalms 42:5: “Why my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.”
We all know what means to be “downcast” in our soul. Feelings of despair, no hope, helplessness, emptiness, and failure go along with being downcast. Many times despair and being downcast come because of disappointment over things not turning out as we had hoped for. There are many forces at work that would cause us to be in despair and it seems that despair knocks on our door all too often. We live in a culture that seems to set the stage for despair. None of us are exempt from the effects of broken relationships, addictions, materialism, loss of moral character and integrity, crime, corruption in high places, financial pressures and conflict throughout the world. Often, feelings of despair just seem to come out of nowhere-unexplainable-with no apparent reason. David knew that putting his hope in God and praising Him was the cure for being downcast-and so it is for us. It is interesting to see that David talked to himself-this is in itself a powerful truth that would benefit us as well. David was instructing his soul to “shape-up” and put its focus back on God! David took dominion over his soul. We easily lose sight of the fact that we have the power to rein in our soul when it is being influenced by the wrong perspective.  We face those times when Mr. Downcast knocks at our door; but the key is not to open the door. If he slips in the back door, then quickly usher him out! Even though David was a man after God’s own heart, he committed some sins that had a tremendous negative impact on him and his family. David repented and God forgave him. I’m sure that David had much regret for what he had done. Also, there were other times in David’s life when he had to deal with despair that came as a result of his enemies’ desire to destroy him. Whether the despair was a result of sin, or from his enemies, David knew that he did not have to live being downcast, and by putting his hope and trust in God and by praising God, despair was defeated. Our Father made provision for us so that we do not have to live being downcast. There is no power that can over-rule the peace of God in our lives. God is the true source of purpose and direction in life and He fulfills the desires of our heart. Another door for despair to enter is that of having no vision. In God’s kingdom, there is no lack of vision if we are in tune with His purposes for our lives.  May we not allow a feeling of despair take root in our life and thereby rob us of the overflowing life that God has for us. Yes-we do face problems, challenges, difficulties, and trials on a regular basis, but we do not have to succumb to despair and our soul does not have to be downcast because we can put our hope and trust in God and we can praise Him. Try it-when you feel despair, verbally praise Him and put your trust in Him. He is there and He is ready to restore your soul.
2 Corinthians 10:5:  “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.”
Colossians 3:15: “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.”
Romans 12:2: “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”

DEATH  PRECEEDS  LIFE

2/7/2019

February 7, 2019                                           DEATH  PRECEEDS  LIFE
Colossians 3:3, 10, 12-13 “For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”  “and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image on the One who created him..”    “And so, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone, just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.”
The Christian faith is so much more than ‘theology’ and so much more than a mental acceptance or agreement with the gospel; the gospel is not just for the class room, the seminary, or our place of study in the home. The gospel of the kingdom of God, when believed and received, impacts every aspect of our being; the gospel is radical in that it takes us out of one kingdom and places us in another kingdom-that’s dramatic. Life in God’s kingdom is totally unlike life that is of the world. Life in the kingdom of God, and the pivotal point of the gospel, is that of the believer having died to self. Our old nature, and the way of the world is to preserve and promote self-and that is the great divide-the basic conflict of the two kingdoms. The believer might have sincere and honest questions as to how one dies to self-after all, one has to live in the world and has to secure what is needed to live, to work, etc. I think it simplifies the idea of dying to self by understanding the instructions regarding ‘taking off’ and ‘putting on.’ As believers, we have the choice of walking according to our flesh, or according to the Spirit; we can choose to put off our old self, and put on the new self-who we are in Christ. Paul makes this clear in Romans 13:14: “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lust.” The problem for many is that it sounds too simple, too easy, that we can just choose to lay aside the old us and put on the new us-but that is just the case. When we put on the new self, we are choosing to walk in harmony with God, in our new identity. A sure way for any believer to live in frustration, emptiness and un-fulfilment is to live contrary to his or her true identity in Christ, not putting on the new self. Rather than seeing death to our self as something that would rob us of life, let us have the wisdom to see that only when we die to our way can we experience life to the fullest. This is a mystery, but we must remember that our ways (our old, natural self) are not God’s ways. Isaiah 55:8-9. A good starting point for us to put on the new man is to begin reading the ‘one-another’ verses in the New Testament and then putting into action, by doing what these verses tell us to do. The amazing thing is that the commands and instructions we read in the scriptures actually describe who we really are-they are clues that point to our new identity-who we really are. For example, scriptures tell us to ‘forgive one another;’ so as we forgive one another, we are living out of our new self and walking in our new identity-and we discover that forgiving others becomes natural because that is a part of our new nature. Let us say ‘good riddance’ to our ways, and embrace the new creation that we are.
Galatians 5:16 “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh.”
Ephesians 4:22-24 “in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lust of deceit and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.”

BE  CAREFUL

2/4/2019

February 4, 2019                                           BE  CAREFUL
Ephesians 5:15-17 “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days or evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
The all-wise, the all-knowing God has given us instruction as to how we are to live, and if we are wise, we will take to heart what He has said. As a starter, we need to be careful as to how we walk, because there are pitfalls along the way to be avoided; paying attention to how we walk-how we live-is certainly wise counsel from a loving Father. We can exercise the wisdom that God gives us, or we can choose to ignore wisdom and live as unwise men and women. Proverbs 3:13 is a good word for us to heed: “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding.”  In addition to being careful, we are to make the most of our time. Time is a precious commodity and a precious gift to us and time is now-this minute, this hour, this day, and we get to choose how to spend it.  Procrastination-putting off what needs to be done-is the enemy of making the most of our time. God has given us the ability to do what we need to do-even that of putting an end to procrastination. The small choices we make throughout the day as to how we will spend our time is the critical issue. If we are sensitive to the Holy Spirit within us, we will know the best way to spend our time. Making the most of our time includes finding time for rest and relaxation as well as things we enjoy doing. Often, in my own life, there are times when I want to just ‘chill-out’-do nothing, but at the same time I hear or sense the promptings of the Spirit for me to do a certain thing. That is the point of battle-do I chill-out, or do I follow the promptings of the Spirit. Even though we in live in evil times, in a time when there are needs on every hand, and it seems that one crisis follows another, we are called to be ambassadors of Christ, to be light in a dark world-so it is critical to make the most of our time as His ambassadors. In this ‘upside down’ world, in a world which is in contrast to the kingdom of God, God has a will, and we have the opportunity to know His will and to be a part of expressing and implementing His will in our sphere. If we truly know the Lord, we have hope, we have life, and we have a reason for living; we have a purpose that is larger than us. Since we are a part of the kingdom of God, and because we are called to be about the things of God, let us be careful as to the choices we make, how we use our time, availing ourselves to the wisdom that comes from God, a wisdom that leads to life. Being careful and making the most of our time does not negate life-but leads to life.
John 9:4 “As long as it is day, we must do the works of Him who sent me. Night is coming when no one can work.”
Psalm 90:12 “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”
Blessings,
Buddy
