Proverbs 15:15 “All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.”
Proverbs 4:20-22 “My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your sight; keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those that find them, and health to all their body.”
In the natural, there are many things that would rob us of a cheerful heart; there is strife and trouble on every hand. The troubles we face in the day in which we live does not catch God by surprise and they do no over-ride the joy and peace that comes from God. However, many, including believers, have allowed the trials they face and the world of strife and conflict to become oppressive. And as the verse above tells us, ‘all the days of the oppressed are wretched.’ The important question is how do we have a cheerful heart when we are surrounded by discord? First, let us understand that having a cheerful heart does not mean that we are oblivious to the trials, nor does not mean that we are unaffected by the trials. A cheerful heart is not a reality when our focus is on what’s taking place around us; a cheerful heart is rooted in faith in God. One who sees beyond the immediate and believes that every word of God will come to pass enjoys a cheerful heart. As in the verse above, it is critical that we pay attention and take to heart what God has said because in His words there is life. The words of God dispel darkness, gives us hope, makes us new, cleanses us, gives us a new identity, and gives us confidence that God is at work even in a dark world. Even in the darkest hour we face, when we don’t understand why, we can have an underlying assurance that God has not forsaken us and that He will give us strength to endure and will use the trial for good. It is amazing, but theses verses tells us that a cheerful heart and taking to heart the words of God has a positive impact on our physical and emotional health! I don’t know about you, but in my goings about, I don’t encounter too many that have a cheerful heart. But you and I can. If you want to bless others and encourage others, then live with a cheerful heart. There will likely be times when our heart is not cheerful and it may be that our heart is seldom cheerful, but when that is the case, let us take a spiritual inventory and examine what we are believing in our hearts. As we align our hearts with the words of God and as we establish our hearts in faith in our loving heavenly Father, a spirit of cheerfulness will fill our heart, freeing us of any and all oppression. God loves us, is for us, and He is more than sufficient for whatever we face in this life.
