THE  LOVE  OF  GOD

March 31, 2017                                             THE  LOVE  OF  GOD
1 John 4:7-10:
“Beloved, let us love another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
How the world defines love and how the scriptures define love are totally different. The word ‘love’ is used very broadly and is often overused. There are three different words for love with different meanings. One is eros love, which has the idea of desire and longing. Another word for love is philos love, which is the kind of love one has for a friend or companion. The third word for love is agape, representing the divine love of God. It is this agape love that believers or called to have for everyone, whether they are believers or not. The love of God is totally unselfish and is a love that gives. The one who does not know the love of God may say that they love someone, but the love they have for that someone is based on how that person makes them feel, etc. God demonstrated divine love by sending His Son to die for us, that we might have life (Romans 5:8). The great transformation that has taken place in those who have come to know God is that He has put His agape love in their hearts. This great truth is found in Romans 5:5: “and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through His Holy Spirit who was given to us.”  Because God has put His divine love within our hearts, we can now love as God loves; our love for others is to originate from the love of God that has been given to us. The root causes of conflicts in the world, as well as the conflicts in relationships, can be traced to a void of God’s love. When we know and experience God’s love, we will in fact be demonstrations of His love. God’s love in us gives us a peace that the world does not know, and His love compels us to express this love to others in tangible ways. It is awesome to realize that the God who created the universe, the God who IS love, chooses to pour out His love into those human beings who place their faith and hope in Him. After all said and done, it is only by and through His love that we are transformed. If you do not know God’s love in a personal way, read the scriptures that point to His love for you, and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth of those scriptures in your Spirit-believe what God has said.
I Corinthians 13:13:
“But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
1 Corinthians 13:3: “And if I give all my possessions to feed the pure, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but do have love, it profits me nothing.”
1 John 4:16: “We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”

GIVE  ME  THIS  MOUNTAIN

March 27, 2017                                     GIVE  ME  THIS  MOUNTAIN
Joshua 14:11-13: “
I am still as strong today as the day of Moses sent me out; I am just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as He said. Then Joshua blessed Caleb, the son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.”
The story of Caleb is one of my favorites in all of scripture. Forty five years before this account of Joshua, Caleb was one of the ten spies Moses sent to spy out the land of Canaan that God had promised to give them. The spies returned and gave their report that it was indeed a beautiful and productive land, but said that because the men who occupied the land were like giants and the cities were fortified, they would not be able to overcome them. But in Numbers 13:30, we find Caleb’s report: “Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, ‘Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.’” Because of unbelief and fear, the people refused to go and take possession of the land and as a result, they continued to wander in the wilderness for forty five years! (I wonder how Caleb dealt with the forty five years of wondering in the wilderness when he knew that they could be living in the land of Canaan.) One thing for sure, Caleb never gave up on what God had promised. Caleb was not afraid of the giants because he knew that God was stronger than any giant and was able to fulfill every promise. The difference between Caleb and the other spies was that he believed God. For us as well, believing God is the difference maker. God has spoken through His word, and sometimes He speaks to us in our spirit in a personal way, but in both cases we can be sure that He will perform what He has said. There are times when He performs His word immediately, and there are times when there is a delay, be He always fulfills His word. Just as with Caleb, believing God produces confidence and gives us energy to pursue the promises of God. For certain, the aging process is real and we will eventually loose strength and stamina, but it also true that we “can do all things through Him who strengthens us.” (Philippians 4:13) The lesson for us from the life of Caleb is that believing what God has said will come to pass, motivates and causes us to pursue what He has said with all of our strength. There should be no retirement from being about what God has promised.
Romans 4:20-21:
“He staggered not at the promises of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; and being fully persuaded that, what He has promised, He was also able to perform.”

DO  NOT  CONFORM

March 24, 2017                                         DO  NOT  CONFORM
1 Peter 1:14:
“As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lust which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;”
As believers, we were transformed when we confessed Christ as our Savior. In Colossians 1:13: we read: “For He delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,” and 2 Corinthians 5:17 states: “Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature, the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”  We are also being transformed as we mature in the faith. 2 Corinthians 3:18: “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image, from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.”  However, Peter makes it clear that after being transformed, it is possible for us to conform to the former manner of life we lived before being transformed. We conform to our old ways, our old man, when we walk according to the flesh and not according to the Spirit. When a believer walks according to the flesh, it grieves the heart of our Father who has set us free form the power of sin and has given us His Spirit that we might walk in newness. If we neglect our spiritual health, if we do not renew our minds, if we do not feed on God’s word, and if it is not our desire to be pleasing to Him in all we do, then we will find ourselves living according to the flesh. We must realize that we cannot blame our enemy, or anyone else for our choosing to live according to the flesh, conforming to who we use to be. As God our Father is holy, we to are to be holy in all behavior. We cannot be holy by our own strength, but because His Spirit lives in us and because God has broken the power of sin, we can live holy. It is certainly to our advantage to live in holiness; living in un-holiness leads to all sorts of devastation and ruin. Being holy is not about us and is not something to be prideful about, but in fact, the power that God has given us to live in holiness humbles us when we realize that it is because of His work in us that we can be holy. Also, our holiness is not just in theory only, but our holiness is to show up in all our behavior!  Let us take to heart the instructions from God to be holy, just as He is holy.
2 Corinthians 7:1:
“Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”

SNAPSHOT

March 21, 2017                                          SNAPSHOT
We do at times suffer from an overload of information. The danger for us is that because we have ‘heard’ so much and are constantly bombarded with information, we may actually become dull of hearing. It seems that nothing ‘wows’ us or really gets our attention. Even in Christian circles, there is an avalanche of information flowing from books, sermons, and music, and so often conflicting opinions and interpretations of the scriptures are presented. The good news is that the gospel of the kingdom of God is sure and never changes, and for the one who has a desire to know God, the scriptures speak clearly, regardless of our intellect or educational background. Romans 12 gives us a good snapshot of what the Christian life is to look like, or the Christian life in real life action. Here’s the snapshot: presenting our bodies a living and holy sacrifice; renewing our minds; having sound judgement; exercising our spiritual gifting; abhorring what is evil; clinging to what is good; devoted to one another in brotherly love; honoring one another; being diligent; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; persevering in tribulation; devoted to prayer; contributing to the needs of the saints; practicing hospitality; bless those who persecute us; rejoicing with those who rejoice and weeping with those who weep; being of the same mind toward one another; not being haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly; do not be wise in our on estimation; do not pay back evil with evil; respect what is right; do not take our own revenge; if our enemy is hungry, feed him; and do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good. This is not a complete ‘snapshot’ of the life of a believer, but it does depict much of what our life is to be if we belong to God. It is vitally important to see that this ‘snapshot’ is not a list of rules we must keep or things that we must ‘work on.’ The beauty is that all of these things listed above, are a result of knowing God and being transformed into His image. It is true that if we find ourselves walking according to the flesh and not according to our new identity in Christ, we need to be reminded of who we are, and that is what Romans 12 is about. There is
a way in which we are to live as believers, and it can be lived only as a result of living out of the new heart and new spirit that God has given. Jesus demonstrated the way of life for us to follow. The early believers were called followers of the Way; they were called ‘Christians’ because their life resembled the life of Jesus.
James 1:22:
“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.”
2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

NO  CONDEMNATION

3/18/2017

March 18, 2017                                    NO  CONDEMNATION
Romans 8:1-2:
“There is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”
We all have things in our past, or in the present, that can cause us to feel condemned, and there is nothing more burdensome or life-draining than that of bearing the weight of condemnation. Because of the sin of Adam and Eve, man is born with a sin nature, alienated from God. However, Jesus came and took on our sin, which is the root of condemnation, and died as a once-for-all sacrifice for our sin, setting us free from the law of sin and death, and condemnation. No matter our past, we can at this very moment live free of any sense of condemnation because we are in Christ and He has reconciled us to the Father. However, according to this verse, we have to conclude that all believers do not automatically live free of condemnation; there is a condition to being free of a sense of condemnation. When a believer chooses to walk or live according to the flesh, he or she will have a sense of condemnation because the Holy Spirit convicts them that they are not walking in the ways of God. (One work of the Spirit is to convict us when we sin.) The Holy Spirit does not actually ‘condemn’ us when we sin, but He does convict us. (Condemnation and conviction may feel very much alike.) The antidote for living under a feeling of condemnation is to walk according to the Spirit, not according to the flesh. We walk according to the Spirit by hearing and following the direction of the Spirit. Foundational to walking according to the Spirit is having a heart that is turned to God, desiring to please Him in all we do. The Spirit enables us to understand and apply what is written in scripture; the scriptures are spiritual and cannot be understood by the carnal mind.  Without the Holy Spirit in us to direct our steps, and to empower us, we would be limited to walking according to the flesh, unable to experience a life free of condemnation. It is indeed a giant step forward for us when we realize that “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus had made us free from the law of sin and death.” Only by being in Christ and by walking according to the Spirit can we go about life free of any and all condemnation! Today, let each of us walk and live according to the Spirit, pleasing Him in all we do. Our enemy does not want us to know and experience “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus,” but wants us believing that we are condemned.  Thank God for taking us from darkness to light, and from condemnation to freedom. Enjoy!
Galatians 5:1:
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourself be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
2 Corinthians 3:17: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

KEEPING  SOBER  IN  SPIRIT

3/15/2017

March 15, 2017                                      KEEPING  SOBER  IN  SPIRIT
1 Peter 1:13,17:
“Therefore gird your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.     And if you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each man’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay upon earth;
What is it that motivates us in life? Many are motivated by what is purely temporal, whether it be financial gain, recreation, sports, status or position in life, reputation, personal appearance, etc. Certainly, none of these temporal things are evil in and of themselves, but when they become the motivation in our life, we are in conflict with the gospel of the kingdom. It is critical that we live with the big picture always in our mind, and that is that we have been redeemed and purchased by the precious blood of Jesus, we belong to Him, and He is coming back for us. Peter tells us to fix our hope completely on the grace to be brought to us when He returns. Even now, Jesus has been revealed and has extended grace to us and we are blessed by His presence in us-but there is more to come! It is in keeping with the gospel to know and enjoy Him now, and at the same time be looking for, and expecting His return. Realizing that He could come at any minute should serve as motivation for us to live our lives in such a way that He finds us ready for His return. The sobering truth is that God will judge each man’s work, including believers, and because of that, Peter says to “conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay upon earth.” This fear is not a fear of God that makes us ‘afraid’ of God,  because God is a God of love who gave His Son to die in our place. The fear we are to have is a healthy fear that is born out of the fact that it is possible for a believer to live a life on earth that is not pleasing to the Father, and at His coming, his life will be exposed. I realize that this may sound legalistic to some, but even though we are righteous in Him and accepted in Him because of His grace and not because of our good works, we are accountable for the life we live as believers. Realizing that God will judge each man’s work when He returns, should without a doubt cause us to be sober in spirit. By being sober in spirit, and by fixing our hope completely on His return, we will be ready when He comes and we will be rewarded by Him!  In light of this sobering truth, let us ‘gird our minds’ for action; let us live in such a way that we will welcome His soon return.
2 Corinthians 5:10: “
For we all must appear before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”
1 Timothy 6:11: “But you, man of God, flee from all of this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.”

YOU  WILL   NEVER  STUMBLE

3/12/2017

March 12, 2017                                       YOU  WILL  NEVER  STUMBLE
2 Peter 1:10-11:
“Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.”
Never stumble-really? What a shocking statement to say the least. These verses high-light the fact that our salvation not only assures us of eternity in heaven, but also impacts our life in the here and now in magnificence ways, as also seen in verse three of this chapter: “seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.” When we begin to understand or come to have a “true knowledge of Him,” we discover that He has indeed granted to us “everything pertaining to life and godliness.” In the first part of this chapter, we find that by the promises of God, we might become “partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world.” Because of His promises and by imparting to us His divine nature, we can now live ‘godly’ lives. In verses five through seven, we are told to be diligent in adding certain qualities to our life including: faith, moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. In verse eight we find the tremendous promise: “For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  Our faith, our salvation, is to be pro-active, applying the words and promises that God has given us. Beware of those who promote the false idea of ‘easy-believism’ that says,“if you just believe in Jesus, everything will be great.” Contrary to what we often hear, even form other believers, God has made it possible for us to live victoriously; we are not doomed to stumble! The promise for us is that “as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble.”  It is safe to say that if we don’t practice these things, surely we will stumble. Let us be all the more diligent in making sure that we are not only adding these qualities to our life, but let us also make sure they are increasing!  Truly knowing God is the entrance into His eternal kingdom where we are enabled to live lives that please Him, and when we live to please Him, we will not stumble!
Colossians 3:17:
“Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”
Isaiah 40:31: “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and will not be faint.”

THE  PLAIN  TRUTH

3/8/2017

March 8, 2017                                         THE  PLAIN  TRUTH
1 John 2:4-6:
“The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whosoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him; the one who says he abides is Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.”
These verses cut right to the core; there is no mixing of words. The beauty of theses verses is that they leave no room for debate and one does not need to engage in an extensive word study in order to get the intended meaning of the truth presented. We find in these verses the plain, undeniable, and powerful truth regarding what it means to know God. God’s over-arching plan and purpose is that those who belong to Him, become like Him. Truly knowing Him is much more than knowing intellectually or knowing about Him; to know Him is to know Him in a personal, intimate way. One cannot come to know God and not be transformed by the love of God. It is the love of God that truly changes a person at the core of his being. When we experience and know the love of God, it becomes natural for us to want our life to be pleasing to Him. Keeping the commandments of God becomes our desire if we know Him; if we do not know Him, we perceive His commandments as things we should do in order to gain His approval. The plain truth of these verses is that truly knowing God always produces a certain outcome, and that outcome is the keeping His commandments and walking in His ways. It can’t be plainer than that! God is about ‘perfecting’ us, and we know that His love has been ‘perfected’ in us when we find it our joy to keep His commandments and “walk in the same manner that He walked.” To ‘walk as He walked’ means that the life we live resembles the life of Jesus. Keeping His commandments and love are not to different issues, but are inseperable; just as the fruit of an apple tree is apples, the fruit of love is the keeping of His words. As we read these verses, let us not be condemned, but let us use them as a ‘checkup’ of our spiritual health. If we find that it is not our sure desire to keep His commandments and walk in His ways, let us ask God to reveal to us His great love for us and then pursue knowing Him.
Colossians 1:9-10:
“For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”

BEING  A  NON-CONFORMIST

3/4/2017

March 4, 2017                                     BEING  A  NON-CONFORMIST
1 Peter 1:14-16 “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lust which were yours in ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves in all your behavior; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”
It is abundantly clear form scripture that at the point of salvation, we are made new, as seen is 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature. The old things have passed away. Behold, the new has come.” It is also clear form scripture that it is possible for a believer not to walk in newness, but to be conformed back to the old self. In Galatians 3:1-2, Paul asked this question: “You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out for you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? We often hear about being conformed to Christ, but let us hear the admonition not to be conformed to our old man. Our being made ‘new creatures’ is no small miracle. Because God has made us new and given us a new identity, we can now ‘resemble’ God in our thoughts and in our actions. Sad to say, but most believers have been exposed to teachings that emphasize our sinful nature and have neglected the fact that we have been freed from the power of sin. In fact, it would seem odd to many and cause someone to question anyone who said that they were living a ‘holy life.’ Yet, God tells us very clearly that we are to be holy in all of our behavior, just as He is holy. We do not become holy by keeping rules or by self-effort; we have been made holy by God, and because He has made us holy, we are to now live holy lives. Rather than taking pride in our ‘holiness’, we are humbled when we understand that being holy is not by our own doing, but by His grace and mercy extended to us. Holiness shows up in practical ways: holiness speaks the truth, thinks pure thoughts, does the honorable thing, and refrains from evil. Being holy does not rob us or take from us, or diminish our life, but in fact brings a new dimension of life that fulfills our deepest longings; God designed us to be holy. Because of what Jesus accomplished by His life and by His death and resurrection, we now have the privilege of being holy people in all of our conduct. Part of being holy is recognizing what is unholy; if and when we sin, the Spirit will quickly point it out so that we can confess it and keep on living in holiness.
Hebrews 10:22: “let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
Romans 8:12-13: “So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh, for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

MORE  PRECIOUS  THAN  GOAL

3/1/2017

March 1, 2017                                     MORE  PRECIOUS  THAN  GOAL

1 Peter 1:4-7: “
to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, that the proof of your faith, being more precious than goal which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
I have never met anyone who enjoyed trials or difficulties. If not careful, the trials we experience will get our attention off of the glorious inheritance that is ours in Christ Jesus. God does have a grand plan for those who trust in Him, and what He has planned will come to pass. Those who belong to God are protected by the power of God through faith, and in fact, have a place reserved in heaven for them! God has revealed much to us concerning His kingdom, but we cannot fully comprehend what God has planned for us in heaven; our salvation is more glorious than we know. (Ephesians 1:9, 1 Corinthians 2:9) Our faith is the peg on which everything hangs. God has chosen to allow ‘various trials’ for the purpose of proving and testing our faith. God knows the degree of faith we have; the proof is that we and all others might know, and see our faith in action in the midst of the trials. God wants us to know that He is greater than our trials and that His power in us enables us to be overcomers in any situation. When our faith is tested-and it will be-and our faith remains strong in the midst of the trial, God is glorified and honored. Peter said that “if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials.” We are not destined to have trials on a continual basis, but only as God allows. The key point is that whatever God allows in my life, whether a trial or particular blessing, I can thank Him for it because He has a purpose in all that He allows to touch my life. Many view salvation as simply a ticket to heaven. This verse, and others, make it clear that we have an inheritance that will not fade away and is reserved for us in heaven. Again, since our faith is the means through which we will receive our inheritance, we can thank God for anything He does that proves and strengthens our faith. Some erroneously equate being a Christian to a life free of troubles. However, Jesus never promised that His followers would not be subject to trials, but that He would give them the power to overcome the trials and that He would use the trials for their good. The scriptures also promise rewards for those who overcome in life. As believers, we need to have ‘thick skin’ when it comes to keeping the course in the midst of the trials. Let our view of trials be that of 2 Corinthians 4:17: “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that for outweighs them all.”
