LET  US  FEAR

July 31, 2018                                              LET  US  FEAR
Hebrews 4:1-2 “Therefore, let us fear lest, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it. For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.”
There are two important truths in this two verses that must be a reality in our own life if we are to be spiritually healthy. First, we need to realize that even though we may be believers, trusting God for our salvation, it is possible for us to live life on earth in a way that is not pleasing to the Lord.  In light of this, we should have a healthy fear of not living according to God’s design and plan for us. It must be understood that we do not, and cannot live in a way that pleases Him by our own strength and will power. We please the Lord when we die to ourselves and live according to the Spirit of God who indwells every believer.  Many spend their life trying to earn God’s approval by their own effort and determination, missing the glorious and fulfilling life that is available to those who know their true identity in Christ. Jesus has paid the full price for our redemption and has us made new creations and has joined us to Himself! What many are striving for, is already ours. So, the fear we should have is a fear of not living in the fullness that is ours in Christ. Again, it is possible to turn away from the Lord even in a very subtle way, and pursue our own way. Second, it is possible to substitute just reading the word with living the word. We may get a certain sense of satisfaction and a feeling that we did ‘our duty’ just from the fact that we read from God’s word. If we hear what God says through the reading of His word without the essential element of faith in what we hear, we do not profit from what we hear. Faith leads to action. As an example, if read Matthew 22:39 where we are told to love our neighbor as thyself, and we do not love our neighbor, then we do not profit from the word and are actually living contrary to the word. (The neighbor Jesus refers to may be more than the person in the house next door.) Once we come to know our true identity in the Lord, it becomes our joy to live out what we learn from God’s word because we know that His words and His ways are life. We should not view God’s word, the bible, as a book of rules that we must keep if we are to earn God’s approval. As we experience His life in us, we will have rest and we will find it our delight to do the things that please Him. Let us exercise faith by putting into action what we read from God’s word.
James 2:17-18 “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.’ Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.”
Psalm 112:1 “Praise the Lord! How blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commandments.”

PRACTICE

July 28, 2018                                                                        PRACTICE
Philippians 4:9 “The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace shall be with you.”
God is supernatural and the Christen life is a supernatural life. However, we also find that the scriptures give us practical instructions in living out the gospel. It’s somewhat a mystery, but we have both the supernatural and the practical as a part of our life. It takes the supernatural work of the Spirit in us to be able to express the practical aspect of the gospel. What Paul is saying in this verse addresses a rather common view of some believers that is not in keeping with the scriptures. Some take the attitude of waiting on God to ‘zap’ them, or in some way overtly speak to them, before they take action. And they may consider the idea of ‘practicing’ what the scriptures teach as a work of the flesh, because it does not appear to be ‘spiritual.’ With that being said, let us be reminded and let us understand that God has called us to work with Him as He works in us. God is in the process of transforming us into His image-and what a transformation! In this process of being transformed, we are learning how to put aside those things that are unlike Him and put on the things that are like Him. We have not spiritually arrived yet, so the work of transformation must continue. This is where the practicing comes in. God’s word was given that we might know Him and that we might know how to live according to His ways. As we read the scriptures, let us see that what they say are not just words, but are indeed a description of what our life is to resemble-the goal we are moving toward. Some things that the scriptures tell us to do may feel a bit uncomfortable at first, but we must choose to ‘practice’ what it says anyway. Just as an example, in the fourth chapter of Philippians we find some of the following things that we are to practice: helping others, rejoicing in the Lord, being forbearing in spirit, being anxious for nothing, praying and giving thanks to God, making request to God, and letting our mind dwell on the things of the Lord. We find instructions throughout scripture on how to live as a member of God’s family. Let us not hesitate to begin to practice the things that are in keeping with who we are in Him. You may feel anxious about something specific, or about life in general, but make the decision to practice the laying aside the anxiety in Jesus name and receiving His peace-the more you do it, the easier it becomes!  Practice the things that please the Lord-if you do, the peace of God shall be with you.
Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”

JOY

July 25, 2018                                                     JOY
Isaiah 55:12 “For you will go out with joy, and be led forth with peace; the mountains and the hills will break forth with shouts of joy before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
Isaiah 55:3 “Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen that you may live;
In the day in which we live, with all of its troubles, can one actually live with a sense of joy?  If we believe what the word of God says, the answer is a definite yes. Perhaps our understanding of joy is tied to our circumstances to a greater degree than we think. The truth is that believers face difficulties; 1 Peter 4:12 tells us not to be surprised with the fiery trials that come our way. How does one live with troubles and with joy at the same time? One thing that often robs us of joy is being focused on the immediate, what’s happening right now. God has the big picture in mind, the long term, and He has a master plan in place for those who trust Him as Savior. God is not restrained by time, but we are, so we tend to operate in the crisis mode or the right now mode much of the time. God has a purpose for our time on earth, and that purpose is to transform us into His image, and experiencing trials is a part of the process. Joy becomes a reality when our view of the present is based on the promises of God regarding our destiny. God is at work in us to preparing us for what lies ahead. We have been redeemed, but our redemption has not yet been fully experienced. God’s grand and glorious plan that will be accomplished, is the gathering of all of His followers in heaven, where they will forever be with Him and will enjoy Him forever. Do we often think about the fact that when we breath our last breath, we will immediately be with the Lord in heaven? Do we often think about how blessed we are to have all of our sins forgiven….about having the Holy Spirit living in us….about being a part of the kingdom of God? We must determine what we focus on. The salvation of God is much more than going to heaven when we die; our salvation in Christ is all inclusive, effecting every aspect of our life.  Not only can we rejoice over the future that God has for us, we can rejoice over what God is doing in the present. Because Christ lives in us, we can live with an attitude of joy and of hope no matter the circumstances-that’s part of being new creations. The joy we are talking about does not mean that we are disconnected from the trials and difficulties of life. Romans 12:15 tells us to “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who mourn.” But even in our weeping, the peace and the joy of the Lord abides with us. May God open our eyes to see all that He has done and all that He is presently doing; when we see Him in everything, we will have joy.
Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

STAND FAST  part 2

7/22/2018

July 22, 2018                                         STAND  FAST  part 2
Galatians 5:13, 16 “For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.   This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
One very real possibility is that believers can live according to the flesh, and not according to the Spirit. There are many scriptures throughout the New Testament admonishing believers to walk according to the Spirit and to do the things that are pleasing to the Lord. Volumes have been written and an endless number of sermons preached dealing with subjects of walking in the Spirit, the flesh, and the grace of God; these three subjects are interwoven, but it is the grace of God that is the heart of the gospel. All that believers are, and all they are called to do, flows out of the grace of God. It is a most dangerous thing for a believer to misunderstand or to ignore the grace of God. The last blog was about believers living in the freedom we have in Christ and not under law, but we saw that we have a tendency to revert back to living under the law of the flesh. Many have taken the grace of God as an excuse or a way to justify what they do even though what they do is not pleasing to the Lord. They claim that ‘God accepts me as I am and He has forgiven me for all my sins.’ Many believers have been snared by this logic and this application of the grace of God. It is true that God accepts us as we are and He forgives all of our sins, but that is only part of the story. We have been made new, with a new nature and a new heart with new desires and He has sent His Holy Spirit to live in us. As believers, we must live with the awareness that we are not who we use to be; we now are new creations who belong to Him. One major error that many believers fall into is trying to please God in the strength of their flesh-and that never works. As simple as it sounds, the cure for walking in the flesh is to walk in the Spirit. The Christian life is not about striving, but about abiding in Him. Let us understand that standing fast is all about refusing to live according to our flesh and all about living in the grace of God that made us new, that empowers us, and that is transforming us into His image. Let no other teaching, no other persuasion, and no other power move us from the true grace of God. A life of walking in the Spirit is a life of love, of serving, of power-a life that resembles the life that Jesus lived here on earth.
Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and delivered Himself up for me.”
Romans 8:2 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

STAND  FAST

July 19, 2018                                              STAND  FAST
Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
The truth found in this verse speaks volumes and pin-points an age old battle that believers have faced ever since Jesus established the church. It seems that man, including believers, has an innate aptitude, or a nature to live under a certain set of laws. Living in freedom does not happen naturally; in many ways, it’s easier to live under law. The letter to the Galatians believers was written to believers who were reverting back to living under the law, even though they were saved by the grace of God. In 3:1-3, Paul asked the Galatians “O foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you?......I would like to learn one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by the means of the flesh?”  We may be quick to say that we do not live under the law, referring to the law that the children of Israel lived under. However, if we examine ourselves carefully, we may find that we do live according to the law of the flesh which says that we must do this or do that in order to be a “good Christian.” As alluded to above, not to live according to the flesh is a big deal! (Just to clarify, living according to the ‘flesh’ is to live according to our own dictates, and not according to the ways of God.) As believers, we must guard against the tendency to judge or validate our spiritually on the basis of what we do out of the law of the flesh. Nothing done in the flesh can be pleasing to God. But let it be clear, as believers, we do have a law to live under-the law of the Spirit in Christ Jesus. As believers, we are to live according to the direction and the empowerment of the Spirit who lives in us. We must understand that we have already been justified, we have already been accepted and made complete in Christ-there is nothing else for us to earn. The things we do now, we do because we belong to Him and we want to do the things that please Him. As a practical example: it is good and right to go to church, but if we go because that is what ‘good Christians’ do, we miss the point. Under the law of the Spirit, we go to church because we are a part of the body of Christ, we go to bless others and enjoy the fellowship, to hear the gospel proclaimed, to exercise our spiritual gifting, to worship with other believers, etc. There is more to be said on this later, but for now, let us ‘stand fast’ in the grace and liberty that we have in Christ and let us do what we do because the Spirit of God is living in us.
Romans 8:1-2 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

OVERLOAD

7/16/2018

July 16, 2018                                         OVERLOAD
Psalm 131:1 “O LORD, my heart is not proud, not my eyes haughty; nor do I involve myself in great matters, or in things too difficult for me.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             It is refreshing to know that the ways of the Lord or not complicated or burdensome, but rather, His ways lead to peace and joy. We live in a day when technology is king, but all too often, because we have access to the world via the internet, we suffer from information overload. In addition to this sense of being overloaded, we also live in a time where there seems to be trouble on every hand and it seems we are helpless when it comes to resolving the crisis we face. Yet, even in the day in which we live, God still invites us to find rest and peace in Him. One might ask if it is even possible to experience His peace in such difficult, complex times. There is wisdom in what the psalmist said in the verse above and we would do well to hear what is said. There is freedom and wisdom in deciding or choosing what we will involve ourselves with. Quite simply, and maybe a strange thought for us, we must choose not to involve ourselves-not give our time or thoughts to-somethings. We must make a decision that there are some ‘great matters’ and ‘things too difficult for me’ that we will not involve ourselves with; we simply choose not to go there. This is not to say that we should bury our head in the sand or not to be engaged in the world in which we live. The key for us is that we be conscience of the fact that we are a part of the kingdom of God and that we live under the lordship of Christ. If we know our true identity as sons and daughters of God, we live out of a new nature with a new set of beliefs and a new set of priorities and values. God has made us overcomers in this life on earth and we are not bound the follow the ways of the world. God is well aware of the pressures that come in life, but He has equipped us to respond victoriously over whatever we face. Let us be involved with what is within our sphere and in the areas where we have influence, but let us not spend emotional energy with the things beyond our control or influence. The blessing is that we can pray for those things over which we have no control, but once we pray, let us leave it with Him. It’s really a good feeling to realize that we are not the ‘captain of the world.’ We can rest and find peace in the fact that God is ruling and that He has enabled and will continue to enable us to overcome whatever comes our way.
1 Peter 5:6-7 “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you.”
Proverbs 16:3 “Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.”

FIXING  OUR  EYES

7/13/2018

July 13, 2018                                FIXING  OUR  EYES
Hebrews 12:2: “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who far the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart.”
There is much today that would cause us take our eyes off of Jesus. We live in what seems to be a complex and complicated world that demands our constant attention and our best effort in order to survive. The ‘here and now’, the pressures and demands of the day, can easily cause us to lose our focus on what is truly important-the things of God, or the Kingdom of God. Somehow, we may fail to make the connection of what’s taking place around us with the much bigger picture of the plans and purposes of God, and if we fail to make this connection, we will indeed “grow weary and lose heart.” Before the days of modern GPS navigation, the captain of the ship could not afford to be focused on the storm and the turbulent waters, but had to be focused on the lighthouse that would bring the ship to safety; as believers, if we are to live life the way God designed, we must be focused on Jesus and not on the world around us. We do live in the world and we are not excused from taking our place in the day to day affairs of living in the world, but by being focused on Jesus and His kingdom, we are overcomers in life instead of being overcome by life. If we see life as one thing and the kingdom of God as something else, and fail to see that the Kingdom of God in us is what empowers us to live as we are designed to live, our world view will become skewed. As the children of God who have been redeemed by the death and resurrection of Jesus, we should filter the events of life through the unchanging reality of the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is real, and Jesus came in order to demonstrate the kingdom, and not only to demonstrate the kingdom, but to introduce the kingdom as a way of life to those who would believe in Him as the Son of God. Jesus knew that He must suffer death on the cross, but He endured the suffering because He could foresee the joy that would come as a result of His brothers and sisters being restored to the Father.  Just as Jesus knew that joy would come because of the suffering He must endure, we too can anticipate joy when we endure any suffering because of our faith in Christ. We can experience joy in this life, but what joy we experience now will not compare to the joy that will be ours when we are united with Him for all eternity. Jesus has already “set down at the right hand of the throne of God,” signifying that He has finished His work of redemption, and now, by “fixing our eyes on Jesus,” we can anticipate the joy that will be ours at His appearing.
Psalm 16:8: “I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

July 10, 2018                                              THERE  MUST  BE  FACTIONS
1 Corinthians 11:19 “For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you.”
This verse gives us a view of factions and disputes that is different from the norm and it shows how God is at work even in the midst of conflict. God certainly knows, and we know, that factions, controversy, and disagreements are as sure to come as sure as the sun rises in the east. All too often, the relational conflicts we experience result in a permanent breakdown of the relationship that often results is a ‘parting of the ways.’ Families have been broken, churches have split, companies have failed, and nations have fought wars all because conflict was not dealt with or not resolved. However, factions, or conflicts, present a perfect opportunity for the wisdom and the love of God to be expressed by one that is walking in the ways of the Lord. Being ‘approved’ by God implies that one is walking or living in the ways of the Lord and that the wisdom and grace of God is evident in that person’s life. Even in the church, there will be disagreements and conflict, but because Jesus is the head of the church, He is able to work all things for good and is able to bring peace where there is conflict. Of course, those who make up the church should not be self-serving, but have a desire for the body to experience body life just as God desires and as His word instructs. The point is, that we will face disagreements, but when the disagreements are dealt with according to the Lord, they can actually serve as means of deepening and strengthening the relationships of the members because the resolutions are found in the Lord. A key ingredient of resolving conflict is that of having a mindset of what is best for others and what will bless others. The mindset of getting what I want is sure to lead to disagreement and conflict, while the mindset of blessing others and expressing the grace of God is sure to lead to peace. It must be said that conflict can be resolved only when all parties want resolution and all are willing to let the Lord have His way. However, there are times when one, or a group of people, demand their way and refuse to seek how the Lord would resolve the conflict. In such cases, the ones who represent the Lord in an acceptable manner can and will experience the peace and grace of the Lord because they responded in a way that pleased Him.
1 Corinthians 1:10 “ Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all think the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgement.”

READY  FOR  INSPECTION

7/7/2018

July 7, 2018                                      READY  FOR  INSPECTION
1 Corinthians 3:12-15 “Now if any man builds upon the foundation, with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it, because it is to be revealed with fire; and the fire will itself test the quality of each man’s work. If any man’s work which he has built upon it remains, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet as though through fire.”
As believers, we must understand that ‘happiness’ is not to be the primary goal in life, and that life is not all about us. This passage of scripture was written to believers, and in this passage we find both a warning and a promise. The reality is that one day there will be an inspection, or review, of the life we lived on earth, and depending on the findings of the inspection, we will either receive a reward, or we will suffer loss. The standard that our life will be judged by is the gospel-the foundation that was laid by Jesus. In life, we have the choice of what building materials we will use-gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw. And, the quality of our work will be tested with fire. We all know what happens when wood, hay, and straw encounters fire. Because the standard that will be used to measure our life is the gospel, then we would be wise to take what the scriptures teach in a most serious manner. Even though God has made each one us unique with varying personalities, we share something in common, and that is, we each have Christ living in us, and He desires to express Himself through us in the life we live. So, we are different, but yet we are alike in that our life is to be a reflection of the person of Christ. We should read the scriptures with the desire to see life from God’s perspective because it is radically different from the perspective of the world. Verse 10 in this same chapter, tells us that we are to be careful as to how we build on the foundation that has been laid. Building with gold, silver, and precious stones is to build with love, faithfulness, thanksgiving, compassion, truthfulness, goodness, righteousness, kindness, and in general, doing the things that are pleasing to the Lord. It is crucial for us to remember that the gold, silver, and precious stones we build with do not come from our flesh, but are supplied to us by Christ who lives in us. So, how we live each day is important, what we do matters, and how we build on the foundation of Jesus Christ will determine how the inspection goes for us! On that day, we will suffer loss, or we will be rewarded. May our work on the foundation stand the test of fire.
Matthew 7:24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

ABIDING  IN  THE  TEACHING

7/4/2018

July 4, 2018                                     ABIDING  IN THE  TEACHING
2 John 8-9: “Watch yourselves, that you might not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; for the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.”
A lot has been said in Christian circles about believers not being under the law but under grace, and that is certainly true. However, at the same time, there has been misunderstanding and confusion about what it means to live under grace. Being under grace is not a license to do as I please and grace does not absolve me from the instruction to “abide in the teaching of Christ.” We have been freed from the Law and now we have been bound to Christ-to honor Him and serve Him, and in fact, we find true freedom only when we find that we have been joined to Christ and we live as belonging to Him-that’s how we are designed. Grace is not an end in itself, but is an enabler that makes living according to God’s design possible, and the instruction to abide in the teaching of Christ is not to be taken lightly, but rather it should be our focus in life. Jesus taught and demonstrated the kingdom of God, and what He taught was in sharp contrast with the ways of the world. Even though what Jesus taught was from the all-knowing, Creator God, His teaching and its application to everyday life was easily understood.  The key point is that what Jesus was taught was not meant to be a set of rules, but was a picture of what kingdom living looked like in the practical. The focus of His teaching was on the heart of man. When we are living according to the new nature-our new heart- that we have been given, our lives will automatically be consistent with the teaching of Jesus and we will not be living by “rules.” When we are abiding in His teaching, we will love our neighbor; we will speak the truth; we will honor others; we will be givers; we will be concerned for the welfare of others; we will pray to our Father; we will forgive; we will have wholesome thoughts; we will not live in fear; we will speak words that build up; we will do what we do as unto the Lord; etc. Again, the life we live reflects our heart, and for that reason, in the verse above, we are told to “watch” ourselves-to make sure we are abiding in His teaching, and in the same verse we find a sobering warning for the one who does not abide in His teaching. The over-riding truth is that Jesus came and He introduced us to the kingdom of God and He taught us how we are to live in His kingdom! Now, as followers of Christ and as good students and disciples, we are to abide in His teaching. There is no higher wisdom and no greater teaching other than what Jesus taught and demonstrated, and when we abide in His teaching, we experience life to the fullest. We must remember the warning found in Psalms 14:12 which tells us that “there is a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to destruction.” Today, let us desire, let us choose to abide in the teaching of Christ and discover life as God designed.
Matthew 7:24: “Therefore; everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock.”
Blessings,
Buddy
