GOOD AND ACCEPTABLE

November 11, 2024                GOOD AND ACCEPTABLE

1 Timothy 2:1-4 “First of all then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgiving, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth.”

We serve a God who is loving, who is kind, who is patient, and who desires the best for mankind; His burden is light and His yoke is easy. The USA has just gone through an election and obviously there are a lot of divided political opinions and viewpoints. Even though there is political division, God gives instructions as to how His people should respond. We are exhorted to make ‘entreaties,’ ‘prayers,’ and ‘petitions.’ Entreaties are defined as an ‘earnest or humble request.’  Prayer is defined as a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God.’ Petitions is defined as ‘appealing to authority with respect to a particular cause.’ These terms or similar, but there is some difference. Note that we are to make entreaties, prayers, petitions and thanksgiving on the behalf of ALL men, including those who are in authority. We are to pray for those who we disagree with; that is good and acceptable to God. We do not need to pray that God will make them think like us because we are convinced that we have it all right. We are simply to lift others up to God, asking Him to speak to them, to give them wisdom, and to draw them to Himself. We are not the judges. God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth. Truth is found only in God. God desires that  those in authority will govern in such a way that the citizens can live a ‘tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.’  How awesome that is! So, even though we live in a politically and every other way a divisive culture, let us keep the main thing the main thing-let us make entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgiving on the behalf of all men-doing such is good and acceptable in the sight of God. We should know by now that arguing and putting labels on others does no good; however praying for and lifting others up to God can make a difference. (It’s ok, and can be a good thing to discuss political issues and to speak up for truth, but we must do so in a spirit that honors the Lord.) In Matthew 5:44 Jesus tells us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Those who we disagree with may or may not be our enemy, but in any case, we are called to pray for them that they would experience the love of God. We have our mandate for living in a divided culture-let’s be about it.
Proverbs 11:25 “Those who live to bless others will have blessings heaped upon them, and the one who pours out his life to pour out blessings will be saturated with favor.”                                                                                                              1 Peter 3:9 “Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for this you are called, that you may obtain a blessing.”

BY THIS WE KNOW

November 9, 2024                 BY THIS WE KNOW

1 John 2:3-6 “And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in Him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself walk in the same manner as He walked.”

In this chapter of John, John is encouraging and instructing believers to live in the light, to love one another, and to reflect the presence of God who is in them. On the first reading of this passage, one might feel condemned because it looks like John is telling them they must be perfect-and they know they are not perfect. But, as we read all of 1 John, we find much encouragement and we see that we can live in the light and we can reflect the life of Christ who indwells us; it is possible to live according to what we read in 1 John. I say it often; the word of God is not a list of commandments we must keep; rather, the New Testament is all about the power of sin over us being broken and us being made new creations with new natures, new spirits and new minds. If we are basing our being pleasing to God by keeping His commandments, we will be frustrated and disappointed because in our own strength we cannot please God. I am convinced that the biggest problem and biggest misunderstanding of the gospel and the biggest problem in the church in general revolves around the issue of why we do what we do. We either live trying to please God, or we live out of the new creation that we are. Here is the good news; when we live out of our true identity as sons and daughters of God, we naturally walk in the ways of God! Does this mean we never sin? No. But as we are walking according to the Spirit-who we are in Him-we will quickly recognize any sin we may commit and we will confess it and turn from it, then continue to live according to the Spirit. (There are times when the Spirit leads us to make adjustments in our lives even thought we have not sinned.) The obvious, the main point is that when the love of God has truly been perfected in someone, they will naturally keep God’s word. When we come to understand our true identity as believers-that He loves us and has made us new creations-we will live with a desire to keep His word and to walk in His ways. The warning in this passage is obvious: if one says he has come to know God and yet does not keep His word-that’s a huge problem. Again; it’s not about sinless perfection; it is about living out of who we are in Him. God’s word tells believes what to do if and when they sin-confess it and turn from it. God’s word is all inclusive and covers all the bases. Do not miss the last few words of this passage. It is abundantly clear in the word of God that WE CAN ‘walk in the same manner as He walked.’ Let us not fall short of our privilege we have as children of God who gives is abundant life.
1 John 2:1, 29 “My little children, I am writing these things to you that you might not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”    “If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.”

PEACE IN THE STORM

November 7, 2024              PEACE IN THE STORM

Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not, I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
1 Peter 5:7 “Casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.”
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

One thing that is certain in life is that storms, difficulties and trials come our way and they come in many different forms. No matter what difficult circumstances we face, Jesus is with us; He never leaves us or forsakes us. He will strengthen us and help us. When we know these things to be true and we embrace them, we have the peace of God even in the most difficult times. Jesus told us that we would have troubles in life-and was He right! Because God is our God, we do not have to be dismayed. When we are in the midst of the trial, He has promised to uphold us-what we face will not defeat us. God invites us to cast our anxieties/cares on Him, and He does so because He cares for us. To cast means  “to throw upon and thus to deposit with.” By faith, let us cast our burdens, our anxieties and cares on Him and leave them with Him. That does not mean that we no longer care, but it means that the burden and the outcome is given to God. Not only does He get us through the trial, He gives us His peace during the trial-a peace that is unexplainable. Because of all that God has made available to us, we have the power to not let our hearts be troubled and the power to not be afraid. All of this may sound to good to be true to some; but it is indeed true and it is a part of our heritage in the Lord-for those who belong to Him. So, we do not have  be alarmed or surprised when the trials come; when they do come, we can know that Jesus is with us and He will strengthen us and give us His peace during the storm.
John 16:33 “I have said these things to you, that in Me you have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Isaiah 26:3 “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in you.”
Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

NO CONDEMNATION

November 4, 2024                NO CONDEMNATION

Romans 8:1-2 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free the law of sin and death.”

This is really good news for you and me! We have done things that were wrong and that were sins against God as well as our fellow human beings. We all have just reasons to be condemned. Living with a sense of condemnations is a heavy burden. Even though God has forgiven us, we may still feel condemned. If that is the case, then we do not understand or do not believe the forgiveness of God for us personally. We know this, but God came that we might be forgiven from ALL sin. One thing that can stand in the way of receiving forgiveness is our pride. It is humbling to confess that we sinned-that we messed up. We tend to justify our sins instead of admitting that yes, we sinned. Not receiving forgiveness from God for our sins keeps us in the prison of condemnation. So, it is awesome news and a most freeing thing to receive the forgiveness of sin-no mater what the sin is or was. It is no more difficult for God to forgive what we call a big sin that it is for Him to forgive what we call a little sin-sin is sin. Some live with a general sense of condemnation. But understand that the Holy Spirt does not give us a general sense of condemnation; the Holy Spirit is specific. Assume we are guilty of lying to someone; in that case, the Holy Spirit will point out the lie and will lead us to confess that lie as a sin and will likely prompt us to ask the one we lied to to forgive us. What a blessing for the work of the Holy Spirit; when we fail, He shows us a way to deal with it that we might be freed from a guilty conscience and any sense of condemnation. There are two laws mentioned in the above verse: the law of the ‘Spirit of life in Christ Jesus’ and the ‘law of sin and death.’ We have two options. Let it penetrate our innermost being that we are not condemned because we are in Christ Jesus-no ands buts or ifs! That is a fact. NOW, we must accept the fact that God does not condemn us! We have been set free from the law of sin and death which includes condemnation. So, even if we sin, we are not condemned; the Holy Spirt points out the specific sin and we confess and continue living in the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. Jesus paid the ultimate price that we might not be condemned because of sin; to live with any sense of condemnation surely grieves the heart of God. Praise God-there is now therefore NO CONDEMNATION!
Romans 8:1 “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
John 3:18 “Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”

BEING COUNTED WORTHY

11/2/2024

November 2, 2024               BEING COUNTED WORTHY

2 Thessalonians 1:10-12 “when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed-for our testimony to you was believed. To this end also we pray for you always that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power; in order that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

I think among many, there is a misunderstanding of an important, foundational  doctrine of the gospel. This misunderstanding is that of grace and works. It is crystal clear in the scriptures that one is saved by grace alone, not by works. Man cannot on His own come to know God as Savior; salvation is an act of God drawing a lost person to Himself. It is also crystal clear in scripture that we are to be about good works-not in order to be saved or to gain Gods approval-but because we are saved. We have been joined to God-and God is righteous and God is good-and just as He is righteous and good, so are we to be the same. He has put a new nature in us-His nature. Let me say at this point; this does not mean that we are perfect and never sin; but it does mean that if and when we sin, the Holy Spirit prompts us to confess it and turn from it-and we do. As believers and as believers who are growing in the faith, sin should not be a normal part of our life; as we grow in the Lord, we should sin less and less. It’s another subject, but when we walk according to the Spirit, we will not fulfill the desire of the flesh and sin. The crux of this blog is that we must know and we must live with the keen awareness that God is a righteous God; God has no part with sin. It is no small issue for us to be joined to God and made one with Him-that has huge implications for us. We are joined to Him only because He has forgiven us through the death and resurrection of Jesus. God instructs us to be holy because He is holy-wow! I say again, this is not saying that we reach a ‘sinless state’ where we never sin. But at the same time, it is true that God has broken the power of sin over us; when we sin, we do so by choice. We can say no to sin and yes to God and we can live in communion and fellowship with God with a clear conscience. We are free not to sin! The big lie and the false impression that many believers live with is that they perceive themselves as having a sin nature that is alive and active and because of that, they often sin. That viewpoint is possibly a sub-conscious excuse for sin-like they just cannot help but sin and fall short often. In some respect, it’s a sobering realization to understand that we have been set free from the power of sin, and that if we sin, it is our choice to do so. Again, God has made provision for when a believer sins-He forgives. But hear this: it is the norm for a believer not to sin! When a child of God sins, it is out of character. There is a great need for believers to understand their true identity as sons and daughters of God. In closing; because we are in Christ, we are to live righteous lives and are to be about works of righteousness and good works BECAUSE our Farther is righteous and holy. In my last blog, we saw that God will judge unrighteousness even in the life of a believer. So, let us live in the freedom we have in Christ-which includes the freedom not to sin. Here is more good news: we can walk worthy of His calling and we can be about the good works He has prepared for us!
Romans 6:12,8:2 “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey its list,”  “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.”
1 Peter 2:24 “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.”

DO YOU NOT THINK

10/31/2024

October 31, 2024                DO YOU NOT THINK

Romans 2:1-4 “Therefore you are without excuse, every man of you who passes judgment, for in that you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know the the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. And do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgement of God? Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

I prefer to write about the encouraging verses and the the awesome promises of God; but I realize that we also have to deal with some portions of scripture that may sound condemning or sound like God is surely out to get us. But, the truth is that all scripture is for our good and serves as a light to our path. One sign of maturity in the faith is being able receive the corrective and the ‘warning’ verses and act on them instead of ignoring them. So it is with the verses above. There is a blunt warning for believers in these verses that we must hear and receive and if necessary, adjust our life-our attitude, our thoughts and our responses. The simple, plan warning for us is that we must not be guilty of passing judgement on others or condemning others; if we judge, we will receive the judgement of God.  We all know that. But as I reflect on my own life, I can see where I do at times pass judgement on others. It’s easy to pass judgment on politicians, those religious leaders who have fallen morally-or whoever. This does not mean that it’s wrong to disagree with or be saddened by the actions of others, but it means we do not have a judging and condemning attitude toward them. When others do what is wrong, we are to pray for them-not judge them; we must leave any judging that needs to be done to God. I said above that all scripture is good for us; so this word is good for us because if received and acted on, we will not receive the judgement of God because we do not judge others. Even Jesus, the Righteous One said that He did not come to judge the world but to save the world. John 12:47. We cannot save others, but we can be used by God in the salvation of others. It is freeing for us to be done with passing judgement and instead, be light in the world to all-even those that oppose God at the present. Let us get rid of the weight of passing judgement and condemning others-its not our place to judge.
Luke 6:37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”

REMEMBER THIS ONE FACT

10/28/2024

October 28, 2024               RMEBER THIS ONE FACT

2 Peter 3:8-12a “But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow about His promises, as some count slowness, but is patience toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God,”

Either we believe what we read in this passage, or we don’t believe. What these verse say are astonishing to say the least; many would say such statements or foolish. Yet, this is what God has spoken; He has revealed what sort of things are yet to come. Some believe that because the earth has been here for thousands of years or as some believe, millions of years, there is no way it is going to suddenly be burned up. We must remember that time is not an issue with God as it is with us. God is patient; He does not wish for any to perish. With that being said, be assured that one day what is prophesied in this passage will come to pass; and it will not be gradual but will come like a thief-suddenly and when least expected. Since such awesome things are sure to happen, we should live in a ‘ready-mode.’ For certain, we want to be ready when these things come about. Being ready is a matter of living according to the ways of God; and that involves living righteously, growing in the faith, having our hearts set on God, loving others, being faithful, and being good stewards of all that He has put in our hands. These things are not a list of things we must do, but describe the life we live as we walk by the Spirit and not according to the flesh and they in part describe life being lived out of the new creation we are-with a new mind, a new heart and a new spirit. We do not have to be fearful of what is to come, but rather we can be ‘looking for and hastening the coming day of the Lord’ because it will be the greatest day ever when He comes for those who love Him.
2 Peter 3:13 “But according to His great promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.”

AS YOU THINK

October 26, 2024                 AS YOU THINK

Proverbs 23:7 “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

The problem that we face when talking about the mind and the power of our thoughts is that we have all heard that subject talked about so often we may fail to let it impact us very deeply. Yet, it is a fact that how we think-what we think about-is so very powerful and it directs our life. What we do, our actions, originate in our minds. Also, our view of life, our worldview, and our responses are rooted in our thought life. There is a mystery surrounding the mind and how it works. It is a fact that man has the power to choose what he thinks about; so it may appear that it is all up to man to set the course of his life by what mindset he chooses-and that is a frightening reality. The good news for those who know God is that we are not left to figure out on our own how we are to think; God, our designer, has given us clear instructions on how we are to think. If you leave this blog with just one thought, let it be this: our minds must be subject to the our spirit; we must direct, or tell our minds what to think. That is absolutely essential. If let our minds wander on it’s own, we will find ourselves thinking in the wrong way. It is also essential that our spirits be in tune with the Holy Spirit who is in us giving us the power to make right choices. We have only two options when it comes to our though life; we either be conformed to the world OR we be transformed by the renewal of our minds. Actually, it is not about us in our self-effort trying to think the way we should; rather it is about living according to the new mind that God has given us. In the Philippians verse above, God gives us a pattern or a guide as to what kind of things we are to think about. If we commit to think according to Philippians 4:8, we will likely find it challenging. There is a discipline called for in managing our thoughts.  So, because how we think not only affects us but others as well, let us take the challenge of God’s word and choose to think according to the ways of God and be transformed. We live in a dark world where many are in bondage because of how they think. May we be a light in the darkness and may we be walking-talking examples of how God has designed us to think in ways that lead to life.
Colossians 3:2 “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”

WAITING FOR A SAVIOR

10/23/2024

October 23, 2024             WAITING FOR A SAVIOR

Philippians 3:17-21 “Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us. For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is their shame, who set their minds on earthly things. For your citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.”

There is a lot in this passage! When I read this passage, I am reminded that our salvation is so much more than a ticket to heaven. Someone said recently “I am saved and going to heaven-that’s all I need” That is a narrow view of what salvation means-it is missing the mark for sure. This passage begins with a bold statement that many today would never say, and if said it, they would think it was a prideful statement. Paul encouraged believers to follow his example, and observe those who walked according to the pattern they saw in Paul and his associates. That’s a challenge for us! Can we tell others to follow our example? Contrary to current opinion of many believers, it is possible and it should be the norm to live in such a way that our lives are examples of how to live according to the ways of God. This does not mean that we are perfect; but it does mean that when we err, we own it and turn from it. Notice, Paul did not say to ‘copy’ him, but to walk according to the pattern. We are unique, yet we walk according to the pattern we have in Christ. But the main point for us today is that our salvation is all-inclusive; we are called to live out our salvation. Even though we live out our salvation on earth, our citizenship is in heaven. We have been joined to Christ; we belong to Him. As we live in this world, we are to be eagerly awaiting and anticipating our Savior’s return. It may be difficult to envision, but our earthly bodies will be transformed into conformity with His body!! Let us reflect on the great truths of the gospel and on what great events await those who know and love God.   (PS: Have you senses trained to recognize those who preach messages contrary to the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.)
Titus2:13 “Waiting for our blesses hope, the appearing of the glory of our great Gospel and Savior Jesus Christ,”
Matthew 24:44 “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
