THOSE WHO WAIT

December 27, 2023                THOSE WHO WAIT

Isaiah 40:29-31, 41:10 “He gives strength to the weary, and to him who lacks might He  increases power, though youths grow weary and tired, and vigorous young men stumble badly, yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk  and not become weary.”      “Do not fear for I am with you; do not anxiously look around you, for I am your God, I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Most of us do not like waiting. Yet, in many places in the scriptures we find the admonition to ‘to wait on the Lord.’ Waiting implies trust; if we trust someone fully, we wait for them to do what they said they would do. To wait, also implies dependency; as believers we depend on God to do what only He can do. It is the nature of man to fight for the things he wants, to go after whatever he thinks will be fulfilling or whatever he needs for survival. No matter how strong and determined one may be, they eventually become weary and stumble-and that is because what they are striving for is found only in the Lord. In contrast, those who wait on the Lord, those who trust and depend on God, gain new strength and they do become weary and they do not stumble! Don’t misunderstand; its possible for a believer to not be waiting on the Lord, but to be living according to their own dictates, or what the scripture calls, living according to their flesh. The promises we see in the above scriptures are for those who have a heart to live according to the ways of God and are indeed walking in His ways. This is not saying that we must be perfect; if we are walking in His ways and we in someway do or say something that is wrong, we quickly confess, turn form it, and then continue to walk according to His ways. Living with an attitude of wanting on the Lord brings with it amazing blessings for us: He gives us strength, increases power, we run and do not get tired, and we do not become weary! We do not have to be anxious, worrying what will happen next BECAUSE HE IS OUR GOD. He will surely help us and uphold us. Sounds to good to be true? It’s not; that is who our God is. The key for us is to have our hearts and our minds turned to the Lord-that is our part. Present circumstances may be difficult and we may have desires and dreams that may not have come to fruition, even though we may believe that God gave us these desires. The word for us is to wait on the Lord to move in His own time and in His own way. Waiting on the Lord in no way means we are to be spiritually lazy or indifferent. We are to be about the task that God has put before us-but as we are about doing what we must do, let us be waiting on the Lord.
Psalm 27:13-14 “I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord.”

GOD WITH US

December 25, 2023                 GOD WITH US

Matthew 1:21-23 “And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins. Now all this took place that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel.’ which translates means, ‘God with us.’”

The prophet Isaiah prophesied the birth of Jesus long before Jesus was born. It was God’s plan from the beginning to send a Savior that would save His people from their sins. Because of the sin of Adam and Eve, we were all born with a sinful nature bent on doing things our way. To prove the point, just notice how a young child responds when they don’t get their way! Some live a ‘good’ life, never committing what one might call a horrible sin of some sort; some might say that their worst sin was eating that piece of candy Mom told them not to eat. But the point remains; we have all sinned against God. God is Holy and He can have nothing to do with sin; and that is why man needed the forgiveness of God. To be forgiven required a sacrifice; and Jesus, who was without sin, was that perfect sacrifice. Because Jesus was born, and later crucified on a cruel cross,  sinners received the forgiveness they desperately needed and full access to God was made available. God did not save us from a distance; God, through His Son Jesus, came to us! His name shall be called Immanuel, God with us! He sent Jesus as the sacrifice BECAUSE HE LOVED US THAT MUCH.
1 John 4:9-11 “This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”

I BRING YOU GOOD NEWS

December 23, 2023              I BRING YOU GOOD NEWS

Luke 2:10-11 “And the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, do not be afraid, for I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths, and lying in a manger.’”

It is difficult, if not impossible to comprehend that the God who created the universe, the God of all power and authority, chose to become like man and be born in a stable. In describing how God humbled Himself in being born as a man, someone said that ‘God allowed to have His diapers changed.’ Even though Mary did not understand it all, how amazing that when she held the babe Jesus in her arms, she was holding God!!! Wow! That’s makes the point. In this Christmas season, we hear a lot about the events around the birth of Jesus. Let us not lose the awe and the wonder of Jesus, the Son of God, coming and being born in a stable so that our sins could be forgiven and that we could become children of God and spend eternity with God in heaven. The birth of Jesus had unimaginable consequences; Satan was defeated; the sin problem was dealt with once for all; and man could be restored to a relationship with God. Even the angels were amazed at the plan God had for the salvation of man; Jesus’ birth was indeed good news for all people, including you and I. He was born as Savior for all people, but sad to say, some reject Him and never come to know Him as Savior. The birth of Jesus changed everything! Now, you and I can rejoice in our salvation; we can live with a clear conscience; we can have an abiding hope and joy; and we can enjoy a relationship with our Heavenly Father-all because one day, Jesus came to earth as Savior. Let us rejoice and be glad, no matter our present circumstances; we are destined to live with Him forever-starting now.
Luke 2:13-14 “And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.’”

NOT BURDENSOME

December 20, 2023                 NOT BURDENSOME

1 John 5:3 “For this is the love of God: that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.”
John 14:21 “Whoever has My commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

The word ‘commandment’ has a negative connotation to some. The culture in which we live values the freedom and the right to do whatever one wants to do; to cast of all restraints. However, such a view has led to tragic, unexpected circumstances-such as addictions, crime, lawlessness, broken relationships, depression, and the list goes on. The commandments that God has given were given that we might experience and discover life as it was intended to be lived. I want to make the point that the commandments of God are good. Common sense tells us that we have to have rules; you cannot play any game without some rules; rules free us to play the game.  Think of the commandments we find in the scriptures as pointing to our new identity we have in Christ. For example; we are commanded to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. The new heart that God has given us wants to love our neighbor. When we read a commandment in the scriptures, we should see it as a red flag, telling us what our new nature is like. If we want to be truly free, then let us embrace every command God has given; let us die to ourselves and live as unto the Lord. Instead of thinking we cannot keep His commandments or questioning whether we want to obey a particular commandment, let us adopt an attitude of wanting to obey every word of the Lord. I know that we at sometimes fail to keep His word, but when that happens, let us confess it and turn back to a spirit of keeping His word. Life to the fullest is found in obeying the words that God has spoken; our motivation for keeping His commandments is not to earn His love or approval, but we keep His commandments because that is how He designed us to live.
Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

12/17/2023

December 17, 2023              BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

Ephesians 5:18 “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,”

This is one of those verses we may be familiar with, but we may not take it to heat. ‘To be filled’ is a command, and it is continual-not a one time experience. There are several reasons we need to be filled with the Spirit; God had good reason for sending the Holy Spirit to live in us. Let’s face it; we need the help that comes from God. In and of ourselves, we are not sufficient for life with all of its challenges, trials and perplexities. John 14:26 tells us that the Holy Spirt is our helper. We need power to live the life that God has for us; our human strength and wherewithal fails-it is simply not enough. The indwelling Holy Spirit gives us the power to say no to sin and the flesh and yes to the things of God. Through the Spirit, we are overcomers. We need the wisdom of God; the wisdom of the world is foolishness. We need His wisdom in making the many decisions we must make in life, and we need wisdom in how to relate to others and how to live in relationships. If we are going to understand the scriptures and to increase in the knowledge of God, we need revelation that only the Spirit can give; we need to have the truth of God’s word revealed in our spirits. There are times we need the comfort that only God can give; the Holy Spirt is our Comforter. We need the fruit of the Spirit; we cannot manufacture what the Spirit produces is us. The Spirit produces in us love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. To be filled with the Spirt is something we do and something God does. Being filled with the Spirit is to turn our hearts and minds to God; to acknowledge that we need Him; to yield to Him-to choose to walk in His ways; if we have sinned, confess it and turn from it; to renew our minds-to think according to the ways of God. When we are filled with the Spirit, we are aware of His presence.  Let us acknowledge that if we are to live the life God has called us to live, and if we are to experience His abundant life, we need to be filled with the Spirit-it’s non-optional.

Galatians 5:16 “I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
John 14:17 “Even the Spirit of truth, whom the word cannot receive, because it neither sees Him or knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

WE HAVE RECEIVED

12/14/2023

December 14, 2023                 WE HAVE RECEIVED

1 Corinthians 2:12-14 “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no man. For who knows the mind of the Lord, that he should instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.”

There are two, and only two spirits; the spirit of the world and the Spirit of God. Every person lives under the direction and influence of one of these two spirits. Those who do not know Jesus as their Savior, live according to the spirit of the world; those who do know Jesus as their Savior, live, or at least should live, according to the Spirit of God who indwells them. Believers have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God. There is no comparing the two spirits-they have nothing in common. As believers, because we have received the Holy Spirit from God, we can have a fuller understanding of God and can know and experience the things that God has freely given to us. What we have as believers does not come from human wisdom, but from the wisdom of the Spirit of God. We may be thinking that that all sounds good, but what practical difference does it make in my day to day life. It makes all the difference! The wisdom of the world does not fulfill and the fruit it produces is always bad fruit; it leads to heartache, regret, and all sorts of trouble. It’s a no-brainer, but the wisdom of the world is not a godly wisdom. The natural man cannot understand the things of God and they are foolishness to him because he or she is void of the Spirit of God. The lost person lives every minute of every day in darkness-yet he is not aware of that reality. The good news is that because we have been given the Spirit of God, we can know what things God has given us, such as forgiveness, love, joy, peace, hope, a new heart and a new mind-and much more. We can know these things not just in our mind, but can know them experientially. And, we can now speak words that are spiritually sound. Because we have the Spirit of God, we can accurately appraise all things. Do not miss the last verse above-it is monumental: ‘we have the mind of Christ.’ Most believers struggle with this truth. But, God has given us a new mind, enabling us to think like He thinks! We are not forced to think like God thinks, but we can choose to think like He thinks and can do so because His Spirit lives in us.

John 14:16-18 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. ‘I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”

I HAVE LEARNED THE SECRET

12/11/2023

December 11, 2023            I HAVE LEARNED THE SECRET

Philippians 4:11-13 “Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; and any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”

What Paul says in the above verses is amazing. I dare say that not many have learned the secret that Paul had learned. The nature of man is to not be content until he gets what he wants-and even when he gets what he wants, the satisfaction does not last. One may be content when things are as he or she desires them to be, but it is something else to be content when things are not as they want them to be-that kind of contentment must be learned. We may ask if  it is really possible to be content in all circumstances. If you or I were to lose our source of income, were to experience bad health, lose a loved one, or whatever, would we no longer be content. Those are tough questions for sure. Contentment does not just drop of the sky; it must be learned. Of course, it is the Holy Spirit who enables us to learn this awesome secret that Paul learned. It also involves having a deep, abiding trust in God, believing in our innermost being that nothing comes into our lives that God does not allow, and that God is always working, no matter the circumstances. (There is a word of caution for us; we must not become lackadaisical in our spirt and in our thought life; it is God who works, but He also calls us to work with Him as He works in us, and we are to be good stewards in life.) Paul learned how to be content whether he was filled or whether he was hungry, or whether he had abundance or suffered need. Wow! I can’t explain it. I do know it involves being completely abandoned to the Lord and yielding our total being to His purposes. It is knowing that things will not always be as we like. It is knowing that He never forsakes us-that He is always present. And, sometimes I think it is just simply ‘holding on,’ or enduring the difficulties we are experiencing as we wait for His deliverance. Paul knew this for sure: He could do all things through Him who strengthened him. As believers, we must know that as well. So, in the difficulties and in the good times, let us be conscience of the presence of the Lord and know beyond any shadow of doubt that we are in His care. His deliverance may be immediate or it may be later-BUT He will comfort us and strengthen us in the present, and use the difficulties for good. Let us be about learning the secret-secrets are hidden, but God reveals them to those who search for them.

2 Corinthians 12:10 “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then i am strong.”

THE DIFFERENCE MAKER

12/7/2023

December 7, 2023              THE DIFFERENCE MAKER

Galatians 5:22-26 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, fruitfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirt. Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.”

In the first part of this chapter, Paul describes what is like to live according to then flesh; in the verses above, He describes what it like to live by the Spirit. As you read this chapter, you see the great contrast of living by the Spirit and living by the flesh. This passage above is one of those we must ‘wrestle’ with if we are to understand what these verses are saying. These verses challenge us at the core. The profound statement is “those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh.’ I am quick to say that I cannot fully understand or explain this statement. I do know that a believer can live according to the flesh; there are many scriptures admonishing believers not to live according to the fleas but to live according to the Spirit. I think there is a major spiritual ‘fork in the road’ when we come to on our spiritual journey; and it is the Spirit who leads us to this point. It sounds so simple, yet it is so profound and so life changing; what makes all the difference, what changes everything is our crucifying the flesh. (The flesh refers to that part of us that wants to live according to our own desires apart from God.) Man thinks that he is wise enough to direct his own life-yet, he cannot find what he seeks for. The verses above talks about those ‘who belong to Christ Jesus.’ After all said and done, we cannot escape the fact that we cannot live according to the Spirit and live the life God has for us until we have crucified the flesh; and the Holy Spirit empowers us to just that. This is not necessarily something we do once one in a life time. There is a ‘both and;’ there should be a point when we realize that our flesh opposes God, and because of that, we consciously die to our self. As we walk with the Lord, it is also a continual choosing of dying to the flesh and living by the Spirit.  Much could be said on this subject, but the key truth is that  we are called to die to ourselves and to yield our selves to the Spirit. Life lived according to the flesh does not satisfy; but walking by the Spirit fills the deepest longings of our soul. The fruit that the Spirit produces in us is always good fruit.
Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”

WHY WE WERE CREATED

December 5, 2023                 WHY WE WERE CREATED

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

There is a common view point, that if accepted, will derail our life as a believer; and it deals with grace and works. Most everyone agrees that we are saved by grace, and rightly so. The error comes when we think that because it is grace that saves us, we may downplay the importance of works. We must not overlook the fact that good works are a crucial part of of the Christian faith. We learn from the passage above the amazing truth that we were created in Christ Jesus for good works! We must know that we do not do good works in effort to earn His love and His acceptance; we do good works because He is good and that is how we are designed-to do good works just as our Father does good works. It is so important to embrace the fact that we are His workmanship; we are not here by accident or by chance. Your life and my life matters. Knowing why we exist and knowing our core purpose in life is essential if we are to live life as God intends. Knowing why we are here and living accordingly has many benefits, and it has a way of helping us avoid costly mistakes in life. Good works are called for because good works glorifies God-and that is more than sufficient reason to be about good works. We must not take credit or draw attention to ourselves for the good works we do; we do them to honor Him and because it is our new nature to do so. As we navigate life and all that it demands, let us not lose the awareness that we were created in Christ Jesus for good works, and by doing so, we glorify and honor Him.

Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in .”
Titus 3:14 “And let our people also learn to maintain good works, to meet urgent needs, that they may not be unfruitful.”
