1 Peter 4:7-10 “The end of all things is at hand; therefore be of sound n judgement and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaint. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”
We do not know when the Lord will return again, but we are to live as though He may return today. The writers of the New Testament encouraged believers to live in such a way that that they would be ready for His appearing at any time. The major event of all time was the coming of Jesus to earth, His death and His resurrection; the resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the pivotal point of all time; in light of that, it is true that ‘the end of all things is at hand.’ The passage above gives us sound instructions as to how we should live as we wait for His return. We are to have sound “judgement and a sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.” To say that the return of Jesus has far-reaching implications is a great understatement; it means that the opportunity of coming to know Christ as Savior has passed; it means that one’s fate is settled-that they will spend eternity in heaven or in hell; it means that there is no longer time to mend relationships, to make things right. It is a sobering thought to know that whenever He suddenly returns, we will be found ready, or not ready. Certainly, knowing that He can appear at any minute should have great impact on how we live. Prayer is listening to and talking to God; as we live in the last days, we should be praying and staying in tune with what God has for us and should be walking in His ways. His return will be awesome and wonderful, or it will be frightening-depending on if we are ready or not. ‘Above all’ let us love one another, be hospitable, serve one another, and be good stewards of the grace of God-then we will welcome His return and rejoice at His appearing. When He appears, we will at last see Him as He is; we will be transformed; and we will be ushered into the place He has reserved for us in heaven. Even though we may not understand how all of these awesome events could take place, and even though it may sound impossible to the logical mind, we can by faith in a faithful and all powerful God, know that these things will surely take place. The word for us is to live in anticipation of His return at any moment in order that we may rejoice when our Lord and Savior appears.
1 John 2:28 “And now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears we may have confidence and not shrink from Him in shame at His coming.”
