2 Thessalonians 1:10-12 “when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among whom all have believed-for our testimony to you was believed. To this end also we pray for you always that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power; in order that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Matthew 24:44 “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
There are many songs, particular older gospel songs, that are about being ready when the Lord returns; and there are many scriptures that call us to be ready for His return. The scriptures above admonish us to be ‘worthy of our calling;’ the inference is that we may be found worthy of our calling, or we may not be found worthy. This speaks to the lives we are living today-are we living worthy of His calling today. If we are to live worthy of our calling, then we must know what our calling is. I can’t answer that completely, and I understand that we are called individually to follow Him in the way He leads. However, all believers share in a common calling. We are all called to love God with all of our hearts; to walk in love; to be bearers of the fruit of the Spirit; to grow in the knowledge of God; to lay our lives down and to put on the new man; to serve and bless others; to be givers-and the list goes on. We need to connect our daily living with being found worthy of His calling at His sudden and unannounced coming for His followers. Being found worthy is more than believing; being found worthy certainly includes believing the gospel, but it also means living out, or putting into action the gospel. This truth is amplified in James 2:17; “Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.” When we are living in a way that is pleasing to Him, then His name is glorified in us; we bless and honor Him when we live according to His ways. So, day by day, let us live as though He is coming again at any moment, and be found ready at His return.
Romans 14:8 “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”
