Luke 5:4-6, 8 “And when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.’ And Simon answered and said, ‘Master, we have worked hard all night and caught nothing, but at your word I will let down the nets.’ And when they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish; and their nets began to break;” “But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”
When Jesus told Peter to let down the nets, what Peter was really saying was ‘Jesus, we are fishermen, we have been fishermen all of our lives, we know about fishing; the fish are not there today; you are not a fisherman.’ The response of Peter can speak volumes to us. After Peter had made the point that he was a fisherman who knew all about fishing, he said, ‘But at your word I will let down the net.’ It is so easy for us to live by, and be guided by our own knowledge and understanding, while not giving thought to what God can do. When we have ‘fished all night’ and the nets are empty, we conclude that it’s time to quit the fishing-we gave it our best shot, but no fish. Do not misunderstand; there is nothing wrong with using good sense and logic in making decisions; but we must not rule out what God can do in any given situation. In particular, when we hear God telling us to do a certain thing, let us be willing to lay logic and reasoning aside and follow what God says. There are times when the Spirit tells us do do something that would make us uncomfortable or it seems to be illogical. Let us respond as Peter by saying to God ‘At your word’ I will do what you command. This not only applies to specific things the Lord says to us; it also applies to what He says in His written word. Peter evidently realized that his hesitation to follow Jesus’ word was sinful; he fell at the feet of Jesus saying that he was a sinful man. We must not take lightly our hesitation in following what Jesus says. When we come face-to-face with Jesus and when we see His power and authority, we are humbled and we wonder how in the world could we ever question Him or fail to follow His every word. So, let us never take what God has said and what He will say in a casual-think about it sort of way. God is a God who is present in the normal routines of life; but He is also a God who has all authority and a God who works miracles and intercedes in the lives of those who love Him and follow Him. Be reminded that we are children of the Creator God-and all things are possible with Him.

1 John 5:3 “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.”
