1 Corinthians 4:4-5 “I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord. Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God.”
What a wonderful way to live-conscience of nothing agains ourselves! And we can live that way. It does not mean that we are perfect, but it does mean dealing with and acknowledging when we are wrong and if need be, making restitution, and walking in the ways of the Lord. We can sin or do wrong in some way, but doing so should be abnormal for us; we can walk according to the Spirit day by day and thus avoid committing sins and wrong doing. We are blessed to be able to live with a clear conscious. We are told to examine ourselves in 2 Corinthians 13:5 and 2 Peter 1:10; however, as Paul said, we are not acquitted by our personal examination. We should live with a conscious mindset that it is the Lord who examines us-and that is not a fearful thing because He is always calling us to life and to Himself; He watches over us and He wants nothing to interfere with our relationship with Him. The Holy Spirit will guide us and lead us in the ways of the Lord. When needed, let us be willing to adjust our thoughts, our actions, our attitude, and our motives in order that our lives reflect the presence of the Lord in us. In this passage, Paul instructs us not to judge others; it is freeing that we do not have to pass judgement on others; rather, we are to wait on the Lord who will bring all things to light. There are times when we need to encourage and admonish someone who is obviously turning from the Lord to turn back to the Lord; we can do this not with a judgmental attitude, but out of a heart of compassion and love for a brother or sister. Let us determine to live life in such a way that we can say with Paul, that we are conscience of nothing against our selves; and let us know that it is the Lord who examines us, with the motive of drawing us to Himself.
Ephesians 5:8-10 “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.”
1 Timothy 1:5 “But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.”
