Romans 6:4-7 “Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united in Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.
Many believe that even as believers in Christ, we we continue to be sinners at the core; in essence, they are saying that we are still slaves to sin. What a tragedy to have this understanding of salvation. Believers can sin, but it is by choice; it not because the flesh is stronger than the Spirt. In the verse above where it says that ‘sin might be done away with’ has the meaning of sin being ‘made powerless.’ It is crucial that we know that we have been set free from the power of sin. The very essence of why Jesus came and died for us was that we could be forgiven of our sins and be set free from the power of sin. It is clear from scripture that our flesh-our old self-has not been annihilated but it is also clear that when we yield to the Spirit, the flesh has no power over us. For us, it is simply a matter of who we choose to yield to; the flesh or the Spirit. That is the choice we have. Galatians 5:16 tells us “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” I have heard believers seemingly excusing their sin by saying that even though they are saved, they are still sinners who continue to sin. Again, believers can sin, but it is important for us to understand that it is by choice that we sin. It is a major breakthrough for us to know that sin no longer has dominion over us. It is liberating to know that we can yield to, and walk by the Spirit, and thus not have to deal with all the fallout that sin brings about when we choose to yield to the flesh. We have been given the Holy Spirit to empower us to live according to the ways of God. If we find ourselves committing a sin, let us confess it, turn from it, and continue to walk according to the Spirit. To live liberated from the power of sin has a major positive impact on our lives. No matter our circumstances or no matter how others act, we can experience the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) being expressed in us. Let us believe what God has said about the power of sin being broken.
Romans 6:11 “Even so, consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
