Matthew 7:20-21,24 “So then, you will know them by their fruits. Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven; but He who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.” “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mind, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house upon the rock,”
We are saved by grace and not by works; most believers would agree with that. However, that belief can be used as an excuse and see it as an ‘escape clause’ for putting into practice the word of God. I have heard a believer make the statement that ‘it does not matter what we do-we are under the grace of God.’ I think I understand what they were trying to say, but that statement taken at face value is far from what the scriptures teach. The verses listed above are sobering and we need to hear what Jesus is saying. It is not those who hear the words that Jesus spoke, but those who act on the words He spoke that will enter the kingdom of heaven. Hearing the word of God carries with it great responsibility. If we know that the God of creation, the all-powerful God, spoke words that were directed to us, then surely we should act on the them and take His every word to heart. God did not speak words and give commands to show us He’s the boss or to burden us; He spoke words that, when acted on, give abundant life. Jesus said we will be known by our fruits. We all have fruits that are a result of the actions we take and the life we live; some have bad fruit and some have good fruit. It’s that simple. The words that Jesus spoke must take preference over all other words we hear-and we hear a lot of words from all sorts of sources. So, the obvious message for us is to make sure that we are not hearers only, but those who act on the words Jesus spoke. The fact is that only those who act on the words of scripture will enter the kingdom of God. Do not take that reality as something to fear; out of love for us, the words spoken by God lead to life and the freedom to live as we were designed to live. (The motive for acting on God’s word is not to gain His approval; we act on His words because we know Him and love Him.)
James 1:25 “But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does.”
