John 19:30 “When Jesus has received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished,’ and He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”
Matthew 28:6 “He is not here, for He has risen, as He said. Come see the place where He lay.”
We can only try to imagine the agony and the suffering Jesus endured as He became the sacrifice for sin. As someone said recently, perhaps the greatest agony He endured was expressed when He asked the Father why He had forsaken Him. (Matthew 27:45.) Jesus and His Father had always been one-never separated; how horrible it must have felt to feel forsaken by His Father. Isaiah and Mark refer to Jesus as a suffering servant; indeed, Jesus left His home in heaven, came to earth, walked among men, and ultimately gave His life as a ransom for the sins of man. Just as Jesus breathed His last breath, He spoke the three awesome, earth-shaking, liberating words, “It is finished!” The price for our sins had been paid in full. That was on Friday, but Sunday was just two days away. Even though Jesus had told His disciples that He would be raised from the dead, they did not understand it. After Jesus had died on the cross, His followers grieved and were dismayed. Jesus said that He endured cross for the joy set before Him. Hebrews 12:2-3. Joy came after the the suffering. Jesus has suffered for us; now we can enter the joy of being forgiven and restored to our Father. Now, the power of sin has been broken. Now, we can experience life as God designed. Now, we live in the light. We must live in the awareness that we live post-resurrection! When Jesus said it was finished-IT WAS FINISHED! The sin issue and the separation issue was settled once for all. It’s great to celebrate Easter on this day; but celebrating the resurrection of Jesus is to be a way of life. Let us thank God God for the so great salvation that came to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus; and may we honor Him by living as those whose who have been redeemed.
1 Peter 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.”
