As you read through the New Testament, you find many verses that encourage believers to be about doing good deeds or righteous deeds. I think that we as a whole have drifted from the importance of good deeds, primarily because there has been in the past an emphasis on the fact that we are not saved by works-and that is true-we are saved through faith in Christ. However, being about good deeds is central to the gospel; because God is good and He does good deeds, it follows that those who know Him will do like-wise. The motive for doing good deeds is not to gain His approval but to demonstrate to the world that God is good and He is righteous-and doing good deeds flows out of the new nature that He has given us. Listed below are some of the scriptures in which we find instructions to be about good deeds.
Galatians 6:9 “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
Hebrews 10:24 “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,”
Titus 2:7a, 3:14 ‘Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works,” “And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.”
2 Timothy 3:17, 6:18 “That the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” “They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share.”
Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Psalm 37:3 “Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.”
James 3:13 “Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.”
This is just a partial list of verses instructing us to be about good deeds-there are many more. The most crucial element about doing good deeds is that good deeds should naturally flow out of our hearts; the reason we do good works is that God has made us new creations, and out of the new person we are, we reflect the goodness of God. These scriptures, and many others, remind us of who we are as children of God.
Titus 3:8 “This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.
