October 31, 2021 NEARER AND BIGGER THAN WE THINK
Psalm 139:1-7 “O Lord, Thou has searched me and known me. Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up; Thou dost understand my thoughts from afar. Thou dost scrutinize my path and my lying down, and are intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O Lord, Thou dost know it all. Thou hast enclosed me behind and before, and laid Thy hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is too high, I cannot attain to it. Where I can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where can I flee from Thy presence?
We tend to think of God being ‘up there somewhere,’ and we must do our part if we are to connect with Him, such as pray, read the bible, go to church, or whatever. It is true that we can break our fellowship with God and it can seem that He is distant, and we can go about to living our life according to our own dictates. It is also true that if we ‘draw near to Him, He will draw near to us.’ James 4:8. However, God knows it all-and all means all! Even before we speak a word, God knows the word we will speak! There is no escaping God. Hebrews 4:13 tells us “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.” For some, the idea of God knowing everything about them is not a pleasant thought. However, once we come to know His as our Father who loves us and cares for us and a Father who will never abandon us, we find great comfort in Him being all-knowing. What a blessing to know that we cannot escape His presence-even if we are living the ‘self-life’ and not seeking Him. Again, do not misunderstand; we can break our fellowship with God by not seeking Him and by living according to our own desires. The point is that He knows our ways-He knows our thoughts, our desires, our actions-He even knows when we sit down and when we get up! He has ‘laid His hands upon us.’ And the greatest part is that He loves us. As the psalmist said, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me.” So what do we do? The fact that He knows everything about us should serve as a motivation to live our lives is such a way that is pleasing to Him.
Psalm 139:13-16 “For Thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst weave me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Thy works, and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from Thee, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth. Thine eyes has seen my unformed substance; and in Thy book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them. How precious also are Thy thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them.”
