2 Kings 2:16-17 “So he answered, ‘Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’ And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw; and behold, the mountains were full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
This is a word we need to hear today. It would appear that we are surrounded by those who oppose God and it may look like a hopeless situation. However, there is a reality we do not see with our natural eyes and we must be established in that truth. If we do not understand that, we will be fearful, and fear robs of peace and rest. The servant of Elisha was afraid because with his eyes he saw that they were surrounded by the enemy. However, Elisha was as ‘cool as a cucumber’ because he saw with his spiritual eyes what was real, what was true. He knew that those who were with him and his servant were more that those who were with the enemy-and that made all the difference. Because of the greatness of God, we do not need to fear even when we see the enemy and those who oppose God-and us. It’s one thing to believe in the greatness of God sitting in our living room or in a Sunday school class; it’s another thing to believe in the greatness of God when we are looking into the eyes of the enemy who are ‘rattling their swords.’ Elisha did not rebuke his servant for being afraid; rather he prayed that God would open his eyes that he could see just how great God is-and see the mountains full of horses and chariots of fire all around. Whether we fear those who are opposing God, or fear for our health and well-being, or fear losing our job, or whatever fear we may have, we find rest and a sense of security when we see the greatness of God. Fear and doubt are all too common among believers today, and that fear keeps one from being confident in the greatness of God and it robs one of boldness. May God open our eyes that we may see the greatness of our God.
1 Chronicles 29:11 “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.”
