Colossians 3:2-3 “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on the earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.”
Proverbs 23:7 “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
It is often said that the major battle we face is the battle of the mind. I think that is true. As we look at this topic, it is crucial to understand that God has made us new creations and has given us a new mind. It is only out of our new minds that we can think in a way that is pleasing to the Lord and in a way that blesses us as well as those around us. We can think out of our old mind, or we think out of our new mind. The new mind we have does not take over our thinking automatically; we must learn from the scriptures how we are to think-we have to adjust to our new selves. It begins with understanding that we have been joined to God and now we view life and circumstances from a new perspective-the prespective that God has. We are no longer limited to the normal human way of thinking. It is not a matter of being a “positive thinker’ or a ‘negative thinker;’ it’s much bigger than that. Because we are in Christ and because the Holy Spirt lives in us, we have the opportunity to think on a totally new plane. It is ever so important to understand that we must instruct our minds what to think about; our spirit is to rule over our minds. If we let our minds wander, our minds will get off course, and that often leads to discouragement. When we think from God’s perspective, our thoughts will be life-giving. Even in difficult situations and uncomfortable circumstances, our thoughts can reflect the life of God and can be a source of light in the darkness. The new heart that God has given us is pure; and out of our new pure hearts come right thoughts and right actions. Let us not be guided by thoughts from the old mind; instead, let us choose to live out of the new person that God created us to be. When we realize our thoughts deviating from the path that leads to life, let us take dominion over our mind and direct it back to thoughts that are life-giving.
Romans 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
