December 7, 2019 WHOEVER DRINKS
John 4:13-14 “Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst again; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”
Obliviously, Jesus was not talking about physical water in His dialogue with the woman at the well, even though she had come to draw water from the well. In this verse, Jesus makes an amazing statement and an amazing promise to those who come to Him. When we drink a glass of water, our thirst is satisfied-for a while-but we soon thirst again. The water that Jesus gives satisfies, and keeps on satisfying-the water He gives becomes a well of water springing up in us! There is a ‘thirst’ in man that goes beyond thirsting for physical water. Man is continually looking for ways to satisfy this thirst; he thinks that by getting ‘this or that,’ or doing ‘this or that,’ or can achieve certain recognition, etc., he will be satisfied. When man finds something that seems to satisfy this innate thirst that he has, it does not last-he soon begins to search again for something else to satisfy this thirst. The things of God do not make sense to the one who does not know Him, but those who know Him for who He truly is, the power and wisdom of God become real, impacting their life in miraculous ways. To the one who does not know Him, the idea of ‘drinking water’ that Jesus gives, makes no sense. Jesus often used the physical or natural things to teach spiritual truths. When one comes to know God through His Son and all that was accomplished on the cross, he becomes a new creation with the ability to understand spiritual truths. One of the basic truths about God is that He alone satisfies the longing that is in the heart of man. The invitation to ‘Come to Jesus’ sounds quite simple, yet, it is the greatest invitation one could receive. If we have put our faith in Jesus, we have the Holy Spirit in us revealing the truth of the gospel and as we learn of Jesus, we discover that this deep longing of our heart is satisfied. It is God’s desire that we know Him, not know about Him. Let us be continually coming to Him and drinking of the water that He offers-He fills the void. Simply put, the water that Jesus offers is found only when our heart turns to Him and we seek Him first.
John 7:38 “He that believeth in Me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”
Isaiah 58:11 “And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fall.”
