John 9:4 “We must work the works of Him who sent Me, as long as it is day; night is coming, when no man can work.”
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
There is a sense of urgency in these verses. Here is a undeniable fact; our days on earth are limited. Another fact is that we were ‘created in Christ Jesus for good works.’ When Jesus spoke these words, there were no electric lights; if you had work to do, you had to do it in the light of day. Obviously, the point is much broader than doing physical work during daylight; there is a greater work that believers are to be about doing. Jesus came bearing light; He is the light of the world. We have been made one with Christ; and we are now His representatives in the world. Just as Jesus came to do the works of the Father, we also are called to be about the works that God has ‘prepared beforehand’ for us. We have a God given mission in life. The mindset of the culture in which we live is that of pleasing ourselves. Obviously, this mindset is in opposition to ways of God and to His kingdom-of which we are a part. The urgent message for us is that we must not be passive as believers, but be actively doing what God has called us to do. You or I may not be called to a foreign mission field or called to serve full time on a church staff; but we are called to do what God has for us to do. We learn form God’s word what works we are to be about. The works of God would include such things as being light, serving one another, blessing one another, prayer, worship, sharing our testimony, helping someone with a need we can meet, showing kindness and compassion, speaking the truth in love, and encouraging others. It also involves us exercising our spiritual gifting and building up the body of Christ. The Holy Spirit will direct us in specific ways of how we can be expressions of the love and grace of God. Until the day when Christ returns, we have opportunity to be about His works; once He returns, our works here on earth come to an end. Also, our days or numbered; we do not know how much longer we, or the others in our life, will be here-so let us use the time we have today to be about the work He has for us.
Colossians 3:23-24 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
