CLEANSING OURSELVES

October 22, 2013                  CLEANSING OURSELVES

2 Corinthians 6:17-7:1 “Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate, says the Lord. And do not touch what is unclean; and I will welcome you.
And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me, says the Lord Almighty. Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

These verses do not make the headlines in our culture; and sad to say, they are not often talked about in Christian circles. They are contrary to our culture that denounces moral absolutes and promotes the idea that each individual decides what is right in his own eyes.  Our culture cast off restraints and encourages every one to express themselves in any way they choose. However, the culture can do whatever it wants to do, but God has His own ‘culture’ and it has always existed and will always exist. In His kingdom (culture) there are absolutes that cannot be broken without suffering the consequences-and that is what the culture of the world despises and denies. God is sovereign whether one believes it or not. As alluded to above, many professing believers have knowingly or unknowingly bought into the worlds culture; many find it difficult saying that certain things are sin-they do not want ‘judge’ anyone. Don’t misunderstand, we are not called to judge, but we are called to recognize sin and abstain from it, and as God leads, exhort and admonish others to stop sinning. (See 1 Corinthians 15:34.) God is holy; He has no sin; He is pure; AND He has called us to be holy in conduct. If we say we love God but continue in sin, we are desperately deceived and we lie. Loving God demands our holiness. Holiness is not a matter of being better than someone else, and it’s not a matter of keeping a list of all the good things we may do. We are holy because Holy God lives in us and He has set us apart; we are the temple of the Holy Spirit—how shall we continue in sin? So, for us-let us not participate in anything that is unpleasing to God; if we find ourselves in a compromising situation or we are being caught up in some sin, let us be quick to come out or leave whatever sin we are committing. For sure, we will have contact and dealings with those who do not know God and we are not to shun them, but we are to be a light that points them to God who forgives and who loves. The main point for us is not to be participants in what is ungodly. We have a great promise; when we come out of what is sin, God will welcome us and He will be our Father. Because of who God is, let us ‘cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. This is a healthy fear. Let us be bold and put away anything that is not pleasing to the Lord.

Romans 6:12-13 “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey its lust, and do not go on presenting your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.”

BEING COUNTED WORTHY

October 19, 2023                          BEING COUNTED WORTHY

2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 “To this end also we pray for you always that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power; in order that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Our motives and how we live matters greatly. We must not forget that we have been called by God; and being called by God is no small thing. It’s not about us evaluating ourselves to see if we are worthy, but about God counting ourselves worthy of His calling. Surely, if we are a professing Cristian, we have a desire to live in a way that is pleasing to the Lord. Having the desire to live as unto the Lord is good, but desire alone misses the mark by a long shot. You have heard the quote “The road to hell is filled with good intentions;” that’s not a scripture, but it does have some truth in it. As you read in the New Covenant, it becomes crystal clear that the plan of God is for His followers to live transformed lives and that their actions reflect the nature of God. We have been called from the kingdom of this world and have been transferred to the kingdom of light. God says that we are light; and He instructs us not to hide our light, but to let it shine. James 4:17 is a sobering verse: “Whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” We must not make the mistake of doing works out of our flesh; the Holy Spirit has been given to us and He will lead us and equip us to do the works of God. This truth is found in Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Let us not be guilty of having good intentions only, but let us be about fulfilling our calling to be about the good works that God has prepared in order that He might be glorified in us. Following are a few verses that encourage us to be proactive in our walk with the Lord.

Ephesians 5:15-17 “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of your time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”
John 9:4 “We must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work.”
Luke 12:35 “Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning.”
Proverbs 14:23 “In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.”
Galatians 6:9 “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in die season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
Hosea 10:12 “Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that He may come and reign righteousness on you.”

BE TRANSFORMED

October 17, 2023                      BE TRANSFORMED

Romans 12:1-2 “I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”

If we embrace the truths of this passage of scripture, our lives are transformed. The first reality we see is that we all present our bodies to something or someone; the question is to what or who do we present ourselves. One might present his or her body to sports, work or career, being socially popular, pursuing knowledge, satisfying our appetite, addictions, or whatever. However, we can also present our bodies as a living and holy sacrifice to God. This does not mean we must live in a monastery or on a foreign mission field or serve on a church staff. The idea is that whatever we do, we do it in a way that is pleasing to the Lord; we are to use our physical bodies as instruments of righteousness. The words we speak and the actions we take can be a ‘spiritual service of worship’ unto the Lord. We must make the choice to not be conformed to this world system which is built on satisfying self. If our minds are not ruled by our spirit, then we will move toward to the self-life. The good news is that God has given us the power and the choice to renew our minds; we chose our mindset and we choose our thoughts. Through His word, God has revealed who He is and He has reveled truths that transform our lives; He offers us life in His kingdom. The key thing for us to do is to have our thoughts based on the truths we find in the word of God and to depend on the leading of the Holy Spirit. Once we are living in the ways of God, we come to know for sure that we are in the perfect will of God-and that is the ultimate experience in life. Living according to this passage in no way robs us of life and it does not mean we cannot enjoy life; but on the contrary, it means we get to live life to the fullest-just as God intended from the start.

Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think on these things.”

TAKE HEED

October 15, 2023                                   TAKE HEED

Colossians 4:17 “And say to Archippus, ‘Take heed to the misery which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.’’

Do not think that ‘ministry’ is only for certain individuals. In a very real sense, every believer has a ministry to fulfill. It’s true that some are called to be pastors, evangelist, or some other minister that is supported by the local church. However, in the kingdom of God, every believer has been given a ministry and it is ever so important to fulfill the ministry we have been given. Whether it is preaching to thousands or visiting someone who is sick and praying for them, both are equally important to God. Each of us have been uniquely gifted in some way and we are to be employing our gift to bless others. The idea that the pastor and the church staff are the ones who minister has had a negative impact on the effectiveness of the church. Whether it is at the work place, on the ball field, at the coffee shop, at the school board meeting-or wherever, we can be the ones who represents the kingdom of God. Also, within our immediate family we are called to minister to the needs of the family members and to be agents of peace and encouragement. Of all the things we do, there is no higher calling than to minster in the way that God has called us to minister. I understand that we can easily get caught up in the routines of life, taking care of the nitty gritty of life, and before we know it, we are simply coasting through life. That is why Paul told someone to say to Archippus. “Take heed to the ministry you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.’ Matthew 11:12 is an interesting verse in that it talks about taking the kingdom with force. I’m not sure of the exact meaning of this verse, but to me it is saying that we can not have a ho-hum attitude regarding the gospel and we can not just take life as it comes. We must be proactive and we must resist the tendency to be on auto pilot when it comes to fulfilling the ministry we have been given. So, let us be ones who understand that God has called us and equipped us for ministry.

1 Pete 4:10 “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”

WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE

10/12/2023

October 12, 2023                    WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE

Micah 6:8 “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

We tend to complicate things, including our relationship with God. It seems we are continually being admonished to be about certain spiritual activities that will bring about spiritual growth, to lay certain things aside and be more diligent in getting our life right with God. Don’t get me wrong; spiritual disciplines and evaluating our life with God is a good thing. But, there seems to be a subtle message ‘out there’ that tells us we need to do more, know more, strive more in order to be right spiritually and to be right with God; like we do not quite measure up or that we are lacking in some way. Colossians 2:10 tells us we are complete in Christ. I fear that many of us live like the proverbial rabbit who never catches the carrot that he is chasing. The good news is that we can ‘find Jesus’ and the life He offers and enjoy life with Him. If we take the scriptures at face value-believe what they say, it almost seems that the message of the gospel is to good to be true. We have heard it often, but Jesus did tell us that He came that we might have abundant life. John 10:10b. God desires that we live in peace and that we experience joy and hope; that we be anxious for nothing; that we fret not; and that we be filled with the Holy Spirit. His promises and desires for us hold true even in the difficult times. We say a lot about the trials of life that we all face, but there are also times when we are not in the midst of the trial. In trials or not, we can ‘act justly, and love mercy and walk humbly with our God.’ In addition to our tendency to complicate things, we may also tend to over-analyze things. Over-analyzing can lead to indecision and it can cause us to be anxious. We should give careful thought to what we do, but the fact is that we cannot figure it all out and we certainly do not know what the future holds. But our God will direct us and give us His wisdom if we ask for it; we can be at peace even as we deal with the issues of life. I know I am rambling at bit, but the point is that God does not complicate life, and He does not burden us down; He came to rescue us from our ways-the ways of fallen man-and He offers us His life and all that comes with it. So, take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy, and be thankful for the life we have in Him.

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

LOVE AND FORGIVENESS

10/8/2023

October 8, 2023                        LOVE AND FORGIVENESS

Luke 7:47 “Jesus said, ‘I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much; but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.’”

There is a definite connection between love and forgiveness. Until one comes face to face with his or her need for forgiveness and realizes that God has forgiven them for their sins, they are apt to be judgemental and short on genuine love. Knowing we have been forgiven has a way on humbling us and giving us compassion for others; it also goes a long way in dealing with any pride on our part. The truth is that all are sinners by birth, in need of forgiveness. Forgiveness is part of the Christian faith; when someone wrongs another, there is a need to forgive the one committing offense. Not extending forgiveness when needed enslaves and imprisons the one who refuses to forgive; an unforgiving spirit leads to bitterness and robs one of the peace of God. So, knowing the forgiveness of God is crucial if we are to walk in the love of God and to be ones who reflect the love of God to all.

Colossians 3:13 “Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”

James 5:16 “Confess your faults one to another, and pray for one another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

A SHIFT IN MINDSET

10/6/2023

October 6, 2023                    A SHIFT IN MINDSET

From Psalms 96: “Sing to the Lord all the earth.” “Tell of His glory among the nations,; “For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;” “Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength, ascribe to the Lord the glory of His name.” “Tremble before HIm all the earth.” “Indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved; He will judge the people with equity.” “Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; Let the sea roar, and all it contains; let the field exult, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy before the Lord, for He is coming; for He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in HIs faithfulness.”    Psalms 97:1 “The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice;”

It’s easy to get sour on what’s taking place in the world. I do not need to name what all is amiss in the world; if you focus on what all is wrong, surely you will become depressed-if not depressed, then at least discouraged. We need to remember that nothing or no one can set aside the rule of God; He is sovereign, all powerful and He is the creator and sustainer of the universe. I fear to some degree that we lave lost the sense and awareness that HE is GOD and He has absolute rule-He is the ultimate big boss of everything! There is a healthy way that we should ‘tremble before Him. “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.”  Hebrews 4:13. The best news ever for us is that this awesome, all powerful God loves us and He cares for us. Sure, there is a lot of bad stuff going on all around us and evil seems to be having a heyday in the world; hope is in short supply; and we see no cure for all that is wrong. But God is not worried or pacing the floor-He is ruling; He is working out His pan. For us, let us rejoice in the fact that our God reigns and that His plans never fail. Let us get our focus off of what is wrong; let’s talk about that God is in full control; that the earth belongs to the Lord; let us speak of His glory; let the earth rejoice and all the trees sing for joy. One fact remains unchangeable-HE IS COMING TO JUDGE THE WORLD IN RIGHTEOUSNESS-HE IS COMING TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT! For those who know Him and for those He knows, it will be a glorious day. There has always been problems in this world-we are no exception to living in troubled times. Let us be about declaring His greatness and ascribing to Him strength and glory in spite of what we see in the natural. Let us rejoice.

1 Chronicles 29:11-12 “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.”

ADDED TO

October 4, 2023                        ADDED TO

Luke 12:28-32 “But if God so arrays the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you, O men of little faith! And do not seek what you shall eat, and what you shall drink, and do not keep worrying. For all of these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows you need these things. But seek for His kingdom, and all these things shall be added to you. Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.”

If there has ever been two opposites, it is the kingdom of God and the kingdom of the world. It may sound ludicrous, even to believers, to say we should not ‘seek what we shall eat, and what we shall drink.’ If not mistaken, it takes food and water to live! 1 Timothy 6:8 tells us to be content with food and clothing. When we read these and other similar verses, we likely have some deep questions and may feel really stretched in our faith. We may at times try to blend  the ways of the world with the ways of the kingdom of God-and that is where we err. I can’t answer all the questions we may have about these verses. Does being content with food and clothing mean we are to be content without a house to live in? We could come up with a lot of questions I’m sure. In Luke 12 we see that God takes care of the birds of the air and he arrays the grass in the field-God cares about His creation-and that includes you and me. There is a core truth we must not miss; if we do one thing, all of this falls into place and we will discover that what God says is exactly right. The single most important thing we can do in this life is to seek His kingdom first. We hear that a lot; but what does it look like to seek His kingdom first? It starts in our heart; do we have a hunger and thirst to know God; is God our priority in life; do we have a desire to please Him in all we do; and do we have a desire to obey His commands and to walk in His ways. The miracle is that when He is our desire in life, when we seek His kingdom first, He adds to our life ALL we need. Sure, we have to work in order to buy food, etc., but we realize that it is God who is providing for us, even through our work.  It is amazing, but God tells us to stop worrying and stop being afraid-and He means just that. What a blessing to hear God say that He gladly gives us the kingdom! His kingdom existed long before the world was created; His kingdom is real and it is eternal; His kingdom never fails; His kingdom has it’s own ‘ways and means;’ and His kingdom has come to earth enabling us to live in His kingdom in the here and now. Life in His kingdom is far  different from living in the kingdom of the world. The world itself is not evil; the earth is the Lords. As those who belong to the kingdom of God, we must bring His kingdom to bear in our sphere and let His kingdom rule and have dominion. We are not to ignore the world-but we are to be walking, talking representatives of His kingdom. Remember; if we seek Him and His kingdom first, He will add to our lives all we need! Let us let go of fear and worry and let us not feel that it is up to us to get the things we need; rather, let us live life in the kingdom of God where He is our provider.

Psalm 54:4 “Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.”
Philippians 4:19 “And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

GOD DOES NOT FORGET

10/2/2023

October 2, 2023                 GOD DOES NOT FORGET

Hebrews 6:10-12 “God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to help the saints. And we desire that each of you show the same diligence so as to realize the same full assurance of hope until the end, that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

Galatians 6:9-10 “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”

Perseverance and diligence are called for in the life of a believer. We have been blessed in many ways and God has done a great work in us presently. However there are promises yet to be fulfilled and an inheritance yet to be received. Because of all that God has ahead for us, we must remain steadfast and diligent in what God has called us to be about at the present. Our faith is not just something we believe; we are called to be workers in His kingdom. God has chosen to use believers, you and me, to minster to the saints; we are co-workers with God. What greater privilege and opportunity could one have than being co-workers with God? It is those who through ‘faith and patience’ inherit the promises that God has for us and it is this hope of receiving the inheritance that energizes us and keeps us as active laborers in His kingdom. We must not allow ourselves to become sluggish, but to be imitators of those who have demonstrated faith and patience in the lives they lived. If you read the New Testament, you will find many instructions and admonitions to be about doing good works ‘unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.’ Our faith is not personal or private; good works are faith in action. James tells us to show our faith by our works. It is important for us to know that we are not saved by good works nor do we gain God’s love and approval by good works. Good works come as a result of knowing the love of God and experiencing His work in us. Remember that we have been and are being restored to the ‘likeness’ of God, and God is a God who does good works. There are innumerable good works we could do, and it is true that we cannot personally meet all needs that we see. What I say next could be misunderstood and it can sound contradictory. We must depend on the leading of the Holy Spirit as to what good works we should do; but at the same time, it should be our nature to do good works because God has given us a new nature like His. The bottom line is that when we have the opportunity, let us do good to all men. God will show you what good works he has for you personally.

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are HIs workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

GRATITUDE

9/29/2023

September 29, 2023                  GRATITUDE

Colossians 2:6-7 “As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Psalm 9:1 “I will give thanks to You, Lord, with all of my heart.”

Having a grateful heart makes all the difference in living life. Viewing and filtering the events of life through a grateful mindset is an antidote for being bitter, resentful, selfish, and ungrateful. No one enjoys the company of an ungrateful person. True gratitude comes from knowing the love of God and knowing that He is a good God and that He is working all things for good if we love Him and are walking in His ways. We must be ‘firmly rooted’ and continue in being ‘built up in Him’ so that we are ‘established in the faith.’ There is a correlation in being grateful and knowing and experiencing God. When we understand that the blessings God bestows on us are because of His grace and not because of what we do, we are grateful. One might say that they have certain possessions or blessings because they work hard for them; but it is is God who gives the power and health know how to work. It is true that all good things come from our Father above. James 1:17. It’s easy to have a grateful spirit when all is well; but even in difficult times we can have a grateful spirit for what God is doing in the process and can be thankful that He will not forsake us, but will comfort us and give us the strength to endure. Let us be grateful; God loves us and has restored us to Himself and He is our provider, our protector and He is our life.

Psalm 106:1, 107:21 “Praise the Lord, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.”     “Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for mankind.”
